Style: Quadrupel (Quad)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
It has been said that the only constant is change and the same is true for barrel-aged beers. Cut from a similar recipe, this barrel-aged Quad evolves and shows a different face each year; a result of time spent aging in the barrel. Turbinado brown sugar from Mexico adds wonderful molasses flavors that are reminiscent of Belgian candi sugar. It has a full body and lush texture with barrel expression all over; toasted oak, coconut, leather and rich cigar tobacco.

Man what a beer, it almost reminds me of a beer by Founders due to the sweet molasses like notes.

I could not wait to try this due to the reviews online, the flavour is fantastic with and what is even more impressive it holds to what the brewers said about the flavour. I will add that it reminds me of a really good rum on the finish for some reason and I am excited to try this again in the future.

I look forward to trying Helldorado in the future.

Found at a random liquor store in northwest suburban Chicago. As a big fan of quads, not sure why this needed aged in a barrel but the end result was pretty effective.

Had a 2017 small bottle straight from a 38F fridge, and let warm all the way to room temp; sipping along the way.
First sip at 38F was marvelous. Notes given describe the beer quite well. An almost overwhelming complexity with dark sweet and fruity flavors, along with excellent maltiness and a hint of hops. Was expecting it to be good, but got a "WOW!" pop anyway. Really wonderful! I would compare this with other world-class quads like Rochefort 10. Rochefort 10 is one of the best, and has great complex fruity flavors. This has darker fruitiness and more sweetness, plus barrel-aging (BA). BA adds additional flavors that enhance the carmelized sweet flavors. The sweetness could be a bit much for some people, but I like molasses in general, and brewing it into a beer in a sensible manner like this, where it enhances the other flavors puts this into the world class level, IMHO.

Also had a 2016 750ml bottle obtained at the same time and from the same source as the 2017 12 oz. bottle reviewed above. This tasted like a blend of 50% wonderful beer and 50% cardboard. Presumably stored at too warm of a temperature or in too much light. Just beware of acquiring older items from bottle shops or on-line. Have had a number of beers obtained from shops that were much older than I would have thought, and tasted no where near their peak, even things that should age well like this one.

Vintage 2016. Stored at cellar temps for most of life. Consumed 10/21/17.

Pours a very dark plum-brown that is nearly black, with a finger of khaki head. Head retention is okay, with a few dots of lacing left behind. Aroma is awash with caramel, molasses, toffee, and syrup. Flavor profile is a soothing, sweet bouquet of caramel, molasses, and toffee. There is just a touch of bourbon and oak at the back of the palate. Not boozy in anyway, just a dash of the barrel aging process peeping through. Toasted and caramel malts show up as the beer warms up a bit. Mouth feel is nearing on velvety, but is broken up by a touch of fizz. Medium-thick consistency gives this beer a presence more on the heavy side. Overall, a super smooth, super well finished quadruple. Well constructed array of notes, although it does land more on the sweet side of the spectrum. Perhaps that's just the smoothing from the age on it.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 22oz bottle.

Pours jet black with slight brown in light with decent head that fades and very sticky lacing. Smells so good, get that sweet oak/malt up front with some nice smokey tones and some grapes. The taste is just stellar, very balanced and smooth molasses oak flavors with a nice smokey undertone, some chocolate and sugary elements come in on the finish. All I can say is this beer was awesome, it went beyond my expectations and I just wish I had 6 more to enjoy throughout the year. Outstanding......
