L: Pours a dark brown/black with a thin soapy head. Lacing is decent and head retention is minimal. There are some very nice glints of red through the sides however.

A: Huge fruity citrus, mango and zesty hop notes. A subtle backdrop of chocolatey roasted malt and some spicy rye character. Some mild fruity esters are present complimenting the hops.

T/M: Smooth but prominent bitterness swells with big, sweet, tropical and citrus hop notes and some light roasted malt character and some earthy rye flavor. Caramel sweetness is also present in moderation, giving a nice backdrop to the hop and roasted flavors. The yeast does a tremendous job of blending in with the rest of the beer profile, as well as not thinning the beer out to much, leaving a nice full body. Aftertastes consists of lingering fruity citrus notes, gentle roasted malt, and some earthy, spicy rye notes.

Overall, one of the best American Black Ales I have ever had. Some people feel this style is just a novelty, but beers like this and Stone's Sublimely Self Righteous go to prove that they are every bit as delicious as any style out there. Every time I open a bottle of this I am amazed at how well balanced and delicious it is. Drink Fresh.

What a fantastic beer.
Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head.
Smell is all citrus/piney hops but with a sweet smelling twist to it.
Is this its own style? Imperial Roggen American Black Ale?
The taste is just like the smell. A sugary sweetness starts things out but the mild hop bitterness quickly takes over and lingers.
Overall a really enjoyable beer and I am just a few sips into the bottle. This is worth the price and I will most likely look for it again.
