Bottled on 6-21-15. This beer may not be as fresh as I've had before, but I'm pleasantly surprised by this beer and how it ages. The hops may have faded, allowing the silky/oily texture of the rye to come through.

A - Pitch black pour with a khaki head with pancake batter bubbles. Spotty lace after each sip.

S - Citrus hops, brown sugar, piney.

T - Hop forward, citrus, grapefruit, balanced nicely with a solid malt back bone, rye ads different elements of hop zest. Feel is a bit too much of an acidity bomb.

O - Solid Rye IPA that had good complexity and flavor.

Poured from bottle into pint glass
L: Very dark, with hints of reddish brown. Small head, little lacing
S: Very citrusy for me. Some piney notes but lots of fresh citrus on the nose. Hints of sweetness as well
T: Hoppy, definately an IPA, but surprisingly well balanced. The hops impart pine as well as citrus flavors. They make their presence known without being too assertive, which I appreciate. Also a bit of that roasty malt on the finish.
F: Smooth, but definately a bit dry. Sort of pulls the moisture out of your mouth. Goes back easy though
O: Great beer. Love how the hops are balanced in this one. Definately would recommend.

12 ounce bottle into a Guinness glass. Deep black with a half a finger tan head. Smells of pine, hops, orange peel. Taste follows the nose. I'm also getting some roasted malt and faint hints of Baker's chocolate. Very pleasant and easy to drink. I could easily finish a 4 pack while watching a football game on TV.

On tap at The Olney Place in Penn Yan, NY.

This pours a dark black, with a half inch off white head, and a good amount of lacing.

Smells like dark roasty malt, chocolate, burnt pine, and some grapefruity citrus.

This is definitely one of the upper echelon Black IPAs out there. This makes sense, as Firestone Walker is one of the upper echelon breweries out there. The "black" and the "IPA" are well balanced, one doesn't outshine the other a whole lot. There's a great slightly ashy dark malt flavor, roasty, with a burnt pine hoppiness, some grapefruit, and some grassiness. Feels a bit earthy.

This has a nice creaminess to it, with a moderate level of carbonation, and a fully thick body.

This is a pretty great black IPA, certainly one of, if not the, best ones out there.

Fantastic beer
Poured out of bottle - nice, dark tan head and rich, dark chocolate color
Caramel and slight licorice hint in the nose
Brilliant complexity - lots of chocolate and caramel malt flavors complimented by a nice spicy hop finish.
Has a warm mouth feel and body without having a syrupy quality.
To me, this beer combines some of the best elements of an IPA, Porter and Old Ale
Really great job by the brewers

I wouldn't consider IPAs, Rye or dark beers my favorites but when you combine them all its perfection. Based on the color of this beer I was expecting it to be heavy but it was medium body and crisp. A little roasty-ness lots of resinous earthy dank hops. I enjoyed this one very much.

Great black IPA that I have enjoyed a few times.

Scent is full of piney, rye spiciness and citrus. Very dark beer with brown highlights at the edge of my glass. Clear at the edges, but generally opaque. The rye is more apparent in the taste and plays well with the hops. Fairly string bitterness. Mild alcohol warming, but neither hot nor astringent. Nice mouthfeel on the fuller side of medium. All around enjoyable and likely my favorite Black IPA with a well integrated rye flavor.

Another solid offering from the Firestone Walker brewery. The beer is highly complex with a great hoppiness flavor. At 8.3% ABV it is very drinkable. Highly recommended!
