A Stout black pour with about a ring of brown head. Hardly any retention or lacing.3.5

S The hops on this are impressive, much more so than a typical black IPA. Very citrusy and lemony, without that roastiness from black IPA I expect. It really smells like an ipa, which I like. 4.5

T the taste continues this theme. It tastes like an IPA, but it's black. Very slight roast character at the back end. It's very fruity and slightly piney. First time I've had a black ipa that is mostly ipa and I like it. 4.5

MF Medium body with a medium carbonation. Very drinkable. The roast and hop combination is very nice. 4.5

Pairing: Again, cheese. The cheese here is basically non existent. As my friend said its basically just texture. The pickled strawberry was wonderful. 4

O My favorite black IPa I've had so far. Really inpressed. FW IPAs seem to be top notch in every way. 5

What a marvelous and intense beer. Pours a very dark brown/mahogany and almost black color. Thick head gives way to a frothy, bubbly and swirly lace. Fabulous aroma; the hops hits you as you breath it in. If you love hops aroma, this is the one for you! I also detect pine. This hops aroma gives way to a sweet chocolate smell. Taste is, like aroma, a hops explosion on the taste buds. This is balanced by a malt feel that has hints of chocolate and coffee. There is also an intense spicy feel. A full bodied and robust drink! Very drinkable!
Overall I loved this beer! Not for the faint of heart!

Bottle poured into a Firestone Walker Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours nearly black, with a frothy light brown head that settles to a firm layer and leaves some nice lacing.

S: Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, a hint of smoke, pine, spruce, citrus, a little tropical fruit, and a touch of toffee sweetness.

T: It might be dark as night but the hops jump right to the front with pine, citrus, orange, grapefruit, and lemon, tropical fruit, pineapple, passion fruit, and peach, backed with roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, a faint hint smoke, spicy rye, earthy herbal notes, and a little toffee sweetness.

M: Medium to full body, just the right carbonation bite before going down silky smooth.

O: It's an absolute shame this beer is going away. I really hope Firestone has a change of heart and opts to make this a seasonal (at the least) instead of ushering it into retirement. What a truly wonderful beer!
