Pours dark black .. Looks like a Russian imperial save for the off white (not brown) head. Light foam, nothing notable. Smell is a hoppy, but not at first. Sneaks up on you with a smell of wood and cigar to a light citrus..floral maybe..aroma. Hard to detect, subtle but really unique smell. Taste follows up with the aroma..definitely tastes smoky and stout-like when it first hits the lips, but as it moves through the palate I get flavors of maple, pine, mild citrus and honestly..cough syrup. Not in a bad way, just the easiest way to describe this fruity flavor I get that's hard to detect. Mouthfeel is thick, love the unfiltered style for an IPA. Definitely digging this style more and more with every beer I try..once again fsw fails to disappoint. Ps..paired this with locally smoked bratwurst..a win there too.

This bomber has been sitting in my fridge for about 3 months and it was time. I poured into a pint glass.

A: Pitch black, with ruby edges in the light. A finger of tan/brown, long lasting head.

S: Piney, earty and citrus from the hops.

T: If I had tasted this without knowing the style and with a blindfold on I would have wagered on a balanced IPA to start. It is bitter, but with a malty base that gives hints of dark ale. This is a perfectly balanced beer.

M: A very well carbonated beer, the mouthfeel belies the color.

O: This is one hell of a beer. The rye makes it special and helps balance it out.
