12oz bottle dated 1/2/15 poured into a pint glass
A: Pitch black with a 1+ finger head
S: Nice malt/hop balance; toasted malts and citrus/grassy hops
T: Matches the nose
M: Medium+ bodied
O: Definitely solid. If I can source a slightly fresher bottle I'm sure my score will increase

as a huge fan of both black ipa's and rye's i couldnt have been more excited to discover this beer
its getting good distribution in colorado and i have had the pleasure of having it from a bomber and on tap at my local roadhouse here in rural gilpin county colorado
to me this beer has some of the characteristics of a black ipa like stone's sublimely self righteous, but also a smokiness that i think comes from the rye
the overall taste is a more muted hopiness than the stone black ipa but with a deeper character that the rye adds to the mix
i didnt notice much difference between the bomber and the tap version at all but both were totally enjoyable and super drinkable
the color was notably on the brownish to amber side instead of deep black and had a decent head and smoky complex taste
had 3 pints in short order out on the deck in the sun and felt the abv!
great beer

Pours a deep Amber / chocolate color with a nice foam head. Aroma of malts and rye. Flavor is roasty, malty and a touch sweet. You get a mild hop profile. Overall one of the better black IPAs I've had

This is the kind of beer that built FW's reputation. Great hybrid type ale with a nice hop bite, spicy rye characteristic, all nicely balanced with malt sweetness. Add in some stout like bitter chocolate and coffee notes and you have one fine CDA, American black ale, black ipa (choose your lingo). Thank you Firestone!

Look: Three fingers of almost brown head is retained nicely. Beer is pretty close to pitch black. Dark brown around the edge of the glass. Pretty lacing.

Smell: Toasty chocolate and toffee comingle with sharp rye and an understated hop profile.

Taste: Rye really comes out and dominates this palate. The roast is pleasantly mild. Hop and bitter finish is almost overlooked by the quality of the malt pressance but really presents its self nicely after a few sips. Pretty dang well balanced and fairly complex.

Feel: A little creamy. A little warmth from the high ABV. Pretty near perfect body.

Overall: Really freaking good. Totally worth the $12 for the 4 pack. Hop heads looking to get into darker beers, this is a good place to start.

One of the better rye based ales I've tasted. I don't always gravitate towards rye in the mash bill, but it just works exceedingly well in this beer. Robust piney hop bitterness, some roasted coffee accents on the nose, and a dark bakers chocolate flavor note are the highlights. The persistent foam cap is an added bonus. Alcohol is present but in a really appealing way, not overpowering but instead adding to the overall rich character and aroma. Drinks lighter than the appearance would suggest. I understand why this beer gets so much praise, and it deserves the hype. You won't find many black ales superior to this.
