Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Parabajava ia an ongoing series exploring the infusion of coffee into our Parabola Barrel Aged Imperial Series. This first offering is a collaboration with the famed Intelligentsia Coffee Company, utilizing their El Diablo espresso blend. This beer was crated for our June 16th Father’s Day brunch at Lot 213 in L.A. The coffee brings intense coffee house espress aroma - roasty carmel, toffee, molasses and fresh ground coffee notes. The flavor melds well with the big rich character of the stout - complementary roasty flavors, dark baker’s chocolate, and more caramel which pairs well with Parabola’s rich malt and smokey oak bourbon notes. The finish is amazingly smooth and integrated.

Good lord, the hype on this one is justified. This is probably one of the top 3 coffee beers I have ever had. It has all the great flavors of a Parabola with toffee, burnt sugar, chocolate, etc with the adding addition of delicious bitter coffee. Such a great beer.

Had this gem on the release day at Barrel Works.

This beer is exactly what you would expect, black as night, this is a straight coffee bomb. Nice roasted coffee with subtle vanilla, bourbon, and other barrel goodness. Coffee is by far the star of the show and is up front and in your face. Very balanced but a coffee bomb, awesome stuff.

Coffee ridiculous, great bourbon and chocolate notes and Not so hot it is in drinkable. Mouthfeel is just right and not thin by any means. Drink now, save, whatever your preference will not take away from this amazing beer.

My first 5 beer! Absolutely phenomenal. Everything you want from a coffee beer. Huge coffee aroma, and taste. Perfectly full body. Nicely balanced and just the right amount of barrel character. I wish I had more.
It's like I dunked a chocolate biscotti into my espresso and chased it with a shot of bourbon. Marvelous.

2015 bomber, amazing coffee and bourbon aroma. Great balance of dark chocolate, coffee, and barrel character. Medium mouthfeel. Smooth, pleasantly sweet finish that hides its abv well. Not hot or overly boozy, amazing well crafted.

What a freakin treat....the added coffee boosts parabola to the next level. Dark chocolate covered coffee bean dipped in bourbon. Once it warmed up I also picked up some maple syrup....awesome!

yip yip yip...thank you beersloth for the amazing extra surprise. been dying to try this. some ppl are saying that this is starting to fall off and if that's the case then damn...this must've been unreal cause right now, I find it fairly mindblowing. I equate it to that first sip of one of those legendary batches of bcbcs (like fresh 13 and 11). Firestone walker really owns barrel aging beer in my mind and the addition of the selected coffee to parabola is simply magic. looking forward to this being an annual release and hopefully getting a little easier to get. homerun!

Absolutely the best beer I've had to date! Never has a 14.0 been so complex and smooth. The oaky bourbon maintains a low bass profile throughout while the coffee, dark chocolate, sea salt, caramel, toffee, and molasses flavors take center stage. A true orchestra of flavors.

Honestly this was the best beer I have ever tried. This is a perfect blend of coffee and malty roasted goodness.

The appearance was very dark, basically black. It had a dark tan head.

The smell was roasted espresso with Caramel sweetness and Bourbon. The taste was similar.

Overall the best tasting coffee barrel aged stout I've ever had.

Takes a perfect base beer and adds another layer of delicious flavor. The coffee adds just enough complexity to the parabola beer. I didn't think parabola could get any better...but here we are.

Edit from original rating
22oz bottle
Pours nice deep black with good head
Coffee dominates the nose but the barrel is not overshadowed.
Taste is AMAZING coffee comes through first then dark chocolate and hints of caramel. Not overly hot but you definitely get a solid barrel presence.
Overall another Amazing release from Firestone Walker. One of the most balanced bourbon coffee stouts. Its drinking great fresh and I can see this aging nicely.

This is awesome. Smells like a fresh batch of coffee brownies dipped in bourbon. The mouthfeel is a nice medium plus. This is a step up from the original. Well done, firestone walker. Well done.

Giving this beer the score that mimics my rating of Parabola, as it is just as tasty as that beer. However, I will note that this beer was shared with 7 people, and I do not remember anyone getting any coffee flavor from the beer.

Incredible beer. So big and yet so smooth with waves of flavors just like Parabola, but wonderfully integrated coffee and just what I was hoping.

Takes one of my favorite beers and improves with coffee while not taking away from the base. Hope they make this again

L: Dark dark dark!
S: So much coffee and chocolate with a nice blend of bourbon vanilla notes
T: This is a coffee bomb! Wow, their barrel aging program simply is amazing, firestone walker does not disappoint. Chocolate covered espresso bean. A tiny bit of heat to it though.
F: Feel is medium
O: Overall this is a fantastic variant of Parabola. Extremely happy that theybhave finally decided to bottle this fine mastepiece.

The aroma hits of big espresso, oak, milk chocolate, malt powder, bourbon vanilla, chocolate cake.

The flavor offers bourbon up front, milk chocolate, a heavy cream flavor in coffee, coffee ice cream, latte, with a longing spicy oak finish and licorice.

Against BCBCS, this paled in comparison, although still being an wonderful extension of a wonderfully executed base bourbon barrel aged imperial stout.

Wow what a beer! I've always found Parabola to be just a bit underwhelming (still delicious, but there are better BA stouts out there); however Parabajava was exactly the punch of flavor it was needing. The coffee takes this beer to the next level, and easily makes it one of the best coffee stouts I've ever had. Can't wait to have it again!

Fairly clear black brew; modest head with OK retention.

Incredible aroma: coffee and bourbon, oak and chocolate, vanilla and ... more coffee.

Impressively smooth. This ranks amongst FW's most perfectly integrated and balanced brews. Chocolate, espresso, and smooth, sweet bourbon. Nutty and roasty. Almost wine-like finish from the barrel.

Mouthfeel is just as impressive. Way too drinkable for 14%. Just a touch of heat on the back end. Thick.

From the first sip, this is a BA brew that can truly rival GI's BC series. Superb; almost too rich.

Nearly perfect BA Coffee Stout. Incredibly smooth coffee flavor. Perfect balance of coffee, barrel, and roast. Goes down way too easy for 14%. If I had to nitpick, its a touch sweet, but far from being "BT sweet."

Poured black with creamy tan head. Smell of coffee and roasted malts, some barrel, not as strong of coffee as I would have guessed. Mouthfeel perfect, smooth and creamy and fairly thick. Tastes great coffee is well balanced with other flavors. Glad this is bottled and hope it gets wide distribution in future

Had Parabola as beer #300, so couldn't think of a better beer to crack for #500. This beer looks very light when it is being poured, but looks almost black in the glass. Head is 1/4 inch and mocha colored. Retention is almost non existent and there is no lacing. Smell is very complex. Chocolate, oak, coffee, vanilla and bourbon are most apparent. Taste is very similar. Absolutely outstanding. Initially the beer is very very chocolatey and although not "hot," kind of heavy on the bourbon too. As it warms though the coffee really emerges and the bourbon takes a back seat. Feel is full and velvety. Slightly sticky on the back end. Overall just fantastic! Based on taste alone this is the best stout I've ever had. According to my BA ratings I like Parabajava .03 more than Parabola.

Pours dark ebony brown with a light brown foamy head, that subsides into a soapy haze atop the glass. Smell is rich chocolate, caramel, toffee, toasted bread notes, and a hint of roast coffee. Taste is Devils food cake with nutty toffee glaze, and a rich roasty coffee finish that lingers in the throat. No Booze. Awesome flavors! Feel is silly smooth, a bit heavy, which suits the style quite well. Overall, an amazing beer start to finish.

Fresh (obviously) bomber into a Barrelworks Teku at cellar temp.

Look: noticeably lighter than Parabola (srm=117 rather than 167); small ring of tan foam.

Smell: straight fudge and coffee; almond extract.

Taste: hot damn, that's delicious. Chocolate truffle, coffee, vanilla, coconut, mild bourbon, mild oak, with hints of tobacco and molasses.

Feel: chewy, without being a chore. Slightly dry, and shockingly little alcohol heat/burn.

Overall: I think I've given maybe two other beers a 5 in taste before, but I had to do it here. This is just a magnificent beer. Given the utter lack of abrasive heat, and the coffee element, I don't think I'll wait longer than four months to finish my remaining bottles. Hard to imagine this getting better anyway.

Like many stouts this one is beat enjoyed as it warms. I was quick to judge, but as it warmed, I began to understand the hype. For a boozey beast that boast 14 percent ABV, one would never know. It's incredibly smooth. The mouthfeel is spot on, and I thoroughly enjoyed. Was definitely worth the few King J's I traded.

2015 vintage. 22 oz. bottle poured into Firestone Walker teku glass.

Pours jet black with a thin medium brown head. Not much lacing.

Nose is led off by a phenomenal fresh-brewed coffee aroma, which transitions to bourbon and dark chocolate. Tons of depth here, yet stays very balanced.

Taste is just as good as the nose if not a bit better. Phenomenal mix of dark chocolate, bourbon, and coffee up front with hints of raisin, caramel, and oak. Between the base stout, barrel, and coffee, each component has a ton of depth but stays quite balanced. A bit too much alcohol heat on the finish is the only issue I can take with this beer - I'm guessing it will improve with age as the alcohol bite fades a bit.

Mouthfeel is full-bodied and smooth with low carbonation. Excellent.

Not that I expected anything less from the Barrelworks program, but this is truly a world-class beer.
