From a bomber into a snifter
2016 Edition
Whisky barrel aged imperial stout with vanilla and cacao nibs

APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a three finger, medium-thicker looking, creamy dark tan head with excellent retention. Black body with no carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full wisp and coats the glass with lacing. Splotchy wisp remains leaving solid lacing down the glass. Good looking.

SMELL: Pretty big nose on this one. Plenty of bourbon barrel, sweet vanilla cream, cacao nibs for sure, with some milk chocolate, toffee and butterscotch as well. Pretty forthcoming and well balanced. The barrel plays a big role here too.

TASTE: Cacao nibs and sweet milk chocolate up front, with some bourbon, sweet vanilla cream and toffee notes as well. Barrel elements at the swallow with bourbon and oak, then a bolder and lasting finish of bourbon, alcohol, cacao nibs, milk chocolate, vanilla cream, toffee and butterscotch. Pretty sweet all around and plenty of vanilla and chocolate character under the boozy barrel.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body and medium carbonation. Creamy and enough weight on the palate, goes down with a bit of a scratch and burn, finishing a touch mouth-coating. A bit of heat lingers. Like most of the others in the series.

OVERALL: Another example of why I love Cycle so much. This is a well-balanced, well-executed, barrel aged, adjunct laced imperial stout. Looks and feels great too. These guys routinely hit the nail in the head with their adjunct additions, which is right up my alley in this style. Despite a few mediocre barreled stouts, generally they’re spot on, and this is no exception. Very much enjoyed all the weekday stouts and look forward to more big, black brews in the near future. Thanks again desp59.

L: pours thick and black, with a larger brown foamy head.
S: some spicy whiskey aromas, slight vanilla.
T: big barrel presence, but a bit spicy on the booze. Not rich and smooth.
F: not as thick as it poured. Medium thickness, and not as smooth as I expected
O: a good beer, not great.
