Reviewed from notes. Purchased at the brewery on 3/8/17. Kept in refrigerator until opening on 11/30/19. 22 oz. bottle poured into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.

A: Of note, only a minimal "pfft" when cracking the bottle. It pours a very dark brown to black, opaque, and low to essentially absent visible carbonation. Minimal if any head – just a few stray bubbles.

S: Dark rich chocolate. Baker's chocolate and some lighter bourbon. Roasted malts, vanilla, oak, tobacco, caramel. But mostly chocolate.

T: Tons of dark chocolate still – Hershey’s Special Dark, baker’s, all rich and sticky. Dark roasted malts add some bitterness, then bourbon and oak with some dry tannins. Mild coffee with some vanilla and toffee notes. But still mostly chocolate, which lingers as bittersweet morsels with a modest bourbon heat after the swallow. Definitely not an overly sweet beer.

M: Thick and sticky body. Very low to absent carbonation sensation. Alcohol seems fairly restrained for a barrel-aged imperial stout.

O: Well, shoot. I wish the carbonation had held up – I think it would have helped some. But to pull off that crazy dark chocolate as a dominant flavor without being even close to overly sweet is a feat.

650 mL bottle. Black body. Smells of bourbon and nutty malts. Oak. A little bit vegetal too. Tastes of chocolate and bourbon. Some oak. Less nutty, but it still has some of the vegetal flavor. Medium heavy. A little bit of a mess.

Used motor oil with minimal fizzy bubbles that die off quickly.

A year out, this brew has a raw, woody cedar note running along a hard and heavy roast with nuts. The chocolate is intense but not sweet via a medium-thin body with bubbly carbonation, finishing crisp yet chewy dry.

So the label of this says stout brewed with extra cocao nibs. That pretty much sums up this beer! Loaded with chocolate! Pours a dark black with hues of deep brown. Milk chocolate colored head. Nose is loaded with chocolate. Some slight roasted malt there as well but this one is definitely a chocolate bomb and guess what? Taste follows the nose! ;) chocolate....both sweet creamy chocolate as well as a bit of dry bakers chocolate in there as well. Some dark fruits. Some light booze in there. Medium to boarding on thin body. Creamy finish.

Thank you Greg for once again assisting w cycle ticks! This set has been awesome. Here we are Tuesday on a monday...typical cycle stout looks...nose is huge chocolate over a BA stout...simple enough. This one is solid but still a tad light in the body but makes for easy taking down of a bottle solo, not sure if it justifies the lofty price tag. Still better than some of the cycle stouts released prior to this after the scale up. Things continue to progress in the right direction.

Got this one from desp59 a while back. Cheers, man!

From a bomber into a snifter
Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with extra cacao nibs

APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a three finger, medium looking, fizzy dark tan head with good retention. Pretty noisy stuff. Black body with lower levels of carbonation evident. Head get pretty pot holed and foamy while it slowly crackles down to a decent foamy cap. Misses lacing, however. A slightly ring remains leaving some dots of lacing falling down the glass.

SMELL: Lots of bourbon, sweet cream and vanilla, milk chocolate and cacao nibs, toffee, butterscotch and oak on the nose. Sweet with a good amount of bourbon barrel and alcohol. Bold for sure.

TASTE: Bourbon barrel and lots of cacao up front. More than the nose had led on. Sweet cream and milk chocolaty sweetness with some alcohol, bourbon and more cacao at the swallow. Bold and very persistent finish with milk chocolate and cacao, bourbon, butterscotch and toffee sweetness, sweet vanilla cream and faint roasted coffee notes. Really flavorful with lots of barrel and cacao in there.

PALATE: Medium –fuller body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a scratch ‘n burn, finishing quite mouth-coating. A bit of heat lingers.

OVERALL: A real beauty of a barrel aged stout. This one is perhaps a little boozier and heavier on the barrel than most in the Cycle arsenal, but it’s got piles of character and the extra cacao nibs really show up here. The head could definitely be better engineered but the rest of the experience is top notch. Thanks again, desp! These guys always do it for me.
