Something must have been off with the bottle/growler that I got. Pour was as expected for the style, plenty of carbonation. The smell was off old cardboard not pleasant at all, probably the worse part of the beer. The taste had a slight sour cherry, vinous taste that kept growing taste after taste. The mouth feel was not as thick as desired. Honestly, though I hate to say it, this seemed like an infected fill. Really bummed about this as I love quality rum and was looking forward to this.

Thanks, David.

Opaque dark brown pour. A finger of brown crust forms and slowly recedes to a collar.

Smells like there's a low level infection. Chocolate brownies, coconut, butter, coffee, lactic sourness. Sweet rum barrel notes pop out as it warms. It's not bad despite the slight sourness and diacetyl.

Palate is sweet and chocolatey, slightly tart, buttery. Big coconut character and a touch of rum. Mouthfeel is silky and full. Not much actual oak flavor. Finish is slick and buttery without much roast.

Shame about the infection, I can tell this would be great stuff otherwise.

There is no way this is a 100/100 world class beer. I must have an infected bottle. Tons of booze, dark fruit, mild sourness, chocolate and a candy flavor. Very poor quality control. I kept this review short, but I am very disappointed since I gave up world class beers in a trade to get this.

thanks to Paul

pours black, bit of a thick body but not sticky or cloying. little to no head, lacing, retention.

light rum and booze on the nose, light chocolate and fudge. lots of roasted malt.

taste was a bit of the weakness IMO. there was some light cherry and rum up front with a faint chocolate body. the finish was heavy roasted malt. sounds great and all but i found most of the flavors muted and not really sticking out.

mild carbonation, a bit light body.

this did not wow me at all, it was good but no where near the trouble to get.

2016 vintage drank on 1/12/2016 at the Assassin hotel bottle share.

I was pretty excited to get to try this one, however, it turned out to be very similar to other rum barrel aged beers. It had that silky creamy feel of the DOS series, but the rum barrel imparts too much sweetness for my liking. The other chocolate and oak notes were nice, but i have not gotten going on the rum barrel aged style yet.
