Nooner batch 3, Rare DOS aged in a Pritchard's single-malt whiskey barrel for six months. 500ml growler into a Cycle Brewing snifter.

A - Pours the usual inky black, with a two-finger mocha head that recedes to a thin cap. Fantastic lacing down the glass for the full duration.

S - Okay, Doug was right -- this smells almost like the beer was aged in a pumpernickel bowl instead of a barrel. Light brown sugar and wheat, along with yeasty goodness. Not sure I've ever found a barrel that gives such a distinctive character to a beer before.

T - It's definitely Rare DOS, but again that breadiness jumps out and dominates. Honey and grain are upfront, some sweet malts in the middle, with a bit of coffee in the finish.

M - Like Rare DOS and its variants, while not Zhukov-esque, the mouthfeel is solid. It's only three days old but is lightly carbonated, yet is very full.

O - This is a unique stout due to the barrel. You hear it about Guinness, but this one really is like drinking a loaf of bread. I have to say that I like Rare and RareR better, but this is a very nice beer and definitely worth chasing down for the tick if nothing else.

Thanks, HeyOhhh!

An exceptional whiskey barrel-aged stout in nearly every way. Thick, black, heavy, and coating in appearance with a dominating chocolate and whiskey combination in the aroma. A little bit of wood and peat as well. The flavors translate nicely as well along with a rich, coating, luxurious mouthfeel experience. Decadent and delicious.

500 mL growler poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Inky black. Decent mocha head. Medium collar.

Smell - Rich chocolate. Whiskey. A little peaty. Boozy. Whiskey dominates the nose.

Taste - Whiskey is less dominant. Rich dark chocolate. Scotch-like whiskey. Oaky. Slightly sharp finish from the whiskey.

Mouthfeel - Thick. Medium low carbonation. Boozy.

Overall - Pretty good, though I prefer the bourbon barrel to this. Not infected though!
