500ml growler poured into a Brooklyn snifter.
A - Pours with a somewhat thin looking body, pretty much completely black liquid when the glass is full, but shows some nice reddish brown highlights as the liquid level falls. A finger pale tan, foamy head forms and lingers for a minute or two before falling to a thin layer on the surface that persists. Mild lace left on the glass.
S - First impression - this smells outstanding! Big mixture of sweet caramel, brown sugar, molasses, sweet and creamy vanilla, lightly buttery, mild hint of black licorice and well integrated bourbon. Smells like an awesome dessert.
T - Sweet at the start with tons of creamy vanilla, brown sugar and caramel. The bourbon is super smooth. Behind the sweet start, the bourbon comes on - firm in flavor, warm alcohol that never overpowers. I'm having a difficult time putting into words how good this beer tastes. This is sweet overall with a distinct candy character to it. This might be the best dessert in a glass that I've ever come across...definitely the best in a very long time.
M - Medium body that feels a bit too light against the flavors that go along with this beer. Carbonation is on the lower side but manages a faint tingle on each sip. Bourbon character is outstanding here...really, really smooth - plenty of bourbon flavor and noticeable alcohol that seems like it should burn a bit given the intensity, but never yields more than a nice warmth on the back of the throat with each swallow. I wish it was just a touch thicker, but this is really finding fault where not much exists.
O - Had high hopes for this coming into it, but was prepared to be let down. On the contrary, this exceeded my expectations...by a lot. The bourbon is so smooth and the complementing candy-like and sweet flavors of vanilla, caramel, and various sugars work together extremely well. This truly is a great dessert beer. Sad that Rare DOS had its issues, but this certainly makes up for it.

500 mL growler poured into a snifter. Graciously shared by Doug.
Appearance - Brown body with some reddish flecks. Nice off white head. Thick collar and lots of chunks.
Smell - Whiskey. Not like bourbon. Spicier and nuttier. Peatier too. Caramel and nutty malts.
Taste - Sharp whiskey flavor. Again, it's got a spicy flavor. Caramel malt. Very nutty. I'm amazed it doesn't have nuts added to it, really. Some chocolate, but it's got more of an emphasis on nutty brown malts.
Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. No carbonation issues. A little boozy.
Overall - This barrel is great. The beer is a little masked, but that doesn't bother me so much.
