It's no secret that we like to party, and sometimes it gets wild. So we took the Westbrook's refreshing Gose and cranked up the volume a bit, adding a massive dose of citra & amarillo hops, then fermented it with various strains of brettanomyces... Go Westbrook, it's your birthday, get funky!!

Straight pour from a pry-off 12oz bottle to an oversized wineglass (JK stem, obvs). I’m not aware of any freshness or dating information present on this bottle, unfortunately, but I purchased a four-pack the first time I saw it on the shelf in my area. I understand it’s a new arrival for us, so I’d like to think that this is as fresh of a bottle as I could reasonably acquire. It’s been refrigerated for several days now.

Appearance (4.0): About two fingers of thin, crackly foam rise off of the pour, capping a pale, slightly peachy straw-colored body. It’s got delicate undertones and quite a pretty hue, if you ask me. Huh. The body is hazy AF, too. Not a lot of retention, with the head dying down fairly quickly and leaving almost no lacing that lasts. More or less par for the course, for style, but the color tickles me for some reason.

Smell (3.75): A soft mixture of pillowy wheat, restrained lactic tones (lemony acidity), a touch of sweet orange flesh, and an odd, fruity phenol with a touch yogurty funk underneath. I like what’s going on here quite a bit, but it’s too soft and understated for my taste.

Taste (4.0): Sour, and seriously funky. In a very good way. The sour and funk kind of play off of each other: at first you think it’s just sour as hell, with cutting lemon zest and yogurty tang, but then you sort some phenolic, at times medicinal and peppery brett tones that add up to a fair amount of funk. Unmalted wheat offers a starchy, bready background that conjures up unsalted oyster crackers, pain de campagne crust, and floury baking soda biscuits. Lactic acid comes through again and again with a lemon-driven, tart clarity, corralling a middle layer of earthy, peppery, medicinal funk filled out by that dry, light, starchy malt base. This is a real funky beer, that’s for sure.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Carbonation is full and lush, with a soft feel that fizzles away eagerly; it’s a perfect match for the light, soft, dry but far from parching body that weighs in somewhat below medium. The acid dries up almost all traces of the body, emphasizing the starchiness of that unmalted wheat. It’s all quite good for a gose, though the brett leaves a lingering funk well past the wash out.

Overall (4.0): Overall I’d say this is a very good gose that’s neither particularly helped nor hurt by the brett component. I’m curious to know if this bottle wasn’t very fresh at all, and a real freshie would show off other aspects of the beer (like, where’s the dry-hopping here? Am I missing it?) . . . Still, I like this as a drinkable sour ale. So happy to see beers like this in four-packs!

With collaborations-a-plenty in the craft beer marketplace, every once in a while, one will actually be an improvement over anything that each brewery could simply do alone, rather than one just being weird. That happens as the collaborative minds of Stillwater and Westbrook clang together.

Its hazy canary-yellow color is a prelude to its sharply acidic tone that defines the beer. But first, its underpinnings of bready pilsner and wheat take hold in a thin cracker-like taste. But that's all short-lived as the sweet and tart flavors grow rapidly and provide a "lemon drop" type of candied tanginess.

But tangy turns to full-out sourness as the powdered sugar sweetness dissolves quickly, leaving the taste of dried lemon and lime to carry a cork-like musty earthiness across the middle. Its palate-stripping vinous acidity is accompanied by the characteristically mineral and salt fullness. Together, a notion of sweat and tin elevate the beer's sourness and enliven its yogurt-like lactic tartness.

Its finish is highly crisp, clean and decidedly piquant; leaving the palate refreshed with an afterglow of fleeting lemon tartness. After a brief delay, an echo of dry wheat revisits the palate deep in aftertaste.

Though many of the classic gose are long gone, comparisons to American attempts are few and far between. But with recent brewing advancements in place, Gose Gone Wild doesn't only compare favorably, it likely surpasses many of them in quality and crispness.

this is amazing, such a puckery experience, as if the regular westbrook gose could get any better, well, it did. the addition of brett to the mix t play with the lacto is really what makes this different. its pale yellow and hazy in its look, very heady, with a ton of sediment in there too. the nose and taste are both tangy, more like the gozu on the fruitiness than anything else. the saltiness is there too, clean though for its yeasty look, and really really dry and brightly carbonated. the funk of the brett adds a layer to the sourness of the lacto, and the result is splendid. the fruitiness has a grapefruit character, maybe from some hops? you dont usually see hoppy gose. its also got a peachy creamy thing going on, which really works in the style. this is easily the most evolved example of a gose i have ever had, wild yeasts on both the hot and cold side, which make this all the more interesting from a process standpoint. thanks to drlovemd87 for sharing this with me, what a treat! perhaps this is the most refreshing beer ever made...

Served from a bomber into a Hill Farmstead stemmed tulip.

Appearance- Cloudy yellow with half finger of white head that left nice lacing.

Smell- Extremely funky. Lemon, brett, light wheat elements, some citra hops. Very funky, yeasty, and lemony.

Taste- Very sour lemon up front, light salinity, brett funk, herbaceous hops. All over the place. Extremly sour.

Mouthfeel- High carbonation, very light body, brett dryness, mouth watering acidity.

Overall- What an interesting beer! very sour and drinkable with a nice blend of sour citrus, herbaceous hops, and brett funk.

Hazed pale golden colour ring of whit head, no lace. Smell has a bit of lemon lime with a light salinity, mildly funky and fruity, slight citrusy notes throughout. Taste is tart and lemony, some salt but lots of funky, sour flavours, dry throughout, quick fruity finish, quite nice and very drinkable. Medium-high carbonation with a light-medium body. Really nice and drinks scary fast, refreshing and flavourful and could be drank without end on a hot day.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours moderately hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart lemon peel, lime, green apple, grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, mango, white vinegar, brine, herbal, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, white bread, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky yeast, citrus/tropical hops, and brine/pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart lemon peel, lime, green apple, grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, mango, white vinegar, brine, herbal, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, white bread, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of fruity acidic tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon peel, lime, green apple, grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, mango, white vinegar, brine, herbal, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, white bread, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and robustness of fruity/funky yeast, citrus/tropical hops, and brine/pale malt sweetness; with an awesome malt/acidity balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with very smooth, crisp, and moderately briny/acidic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish as expected of 4.3%. Overall this is an absolutely incredible hoppy gose style! All around fantastic complexity and robustness of fruity/funky yeast, citrus/tropical hops, and brine/pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink with the balanced acidity. An extremely delicious offering.

The aroma portends a citrus bomb as strong scents of nectarines, grapefruit, apricots and tangerines hold the nose.

This flavor is sublime as a nicely tempered sourness glides across the palate. The taste has a pulpy natural grapefruit, tangy nectarine, fruity apricot and a bit of earthy mineral. This does have little to no saltiness, which will make some very happy, but instead highlights a very real tangy, tart and sweet.
