Very drinkable and flavorful vlaams rood. It lacks the complexity of the one and only Rodenbach Grand Cru. This is only second to the best.

The lightly hazed reddish cherry wood colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a finely bubbled 1” light pink head that recedes slowly to a thin, irregular island of foam and a small ring around the glass while leaving little or no lacing. Sipping creates some widely scattered patches and a few legs of lacing, most of which slide back down to the liquid.
The aromas include some red wine grapes, some oak, some dark bread, a hint of something like tart cherries.
As expected from the nose the flavors are mostly about the red wine grapes. There’s also some fruity dark cherry tartness along with the bit of wood from the oak. In the background there’s some dark bread and sweetness from the malt.
The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium bodied as well as being both tart with the red grape and dark cherry notes and slightly prickly from the light carbonation. The background includes some wood from the oak and some dark bread from the malt. The medium length finish begins as the malt sweetness and dark bread begin to disappear leaving both the tartness from the grapes and cherry, along with a bit of oak, to lead the way to a semi-dry and astringent finish in the middle and back of the palate.
Overall an interesting beer which is well made and which I’ve enjoyed trying for the complexity of it’s flavor profile. But that said, I’m not sure I’ll be repeating this one. Effectively the overall aroma/flavor profiles show a bit too much red wine and dark cherry tartness for my tastes.

an interesting beer in an interesting looking can, stillwater always keeps me engaged, even if i dont love the beer sometimes. this one is tasty, but i definitely wanted more from it. i like how winey it is, almost gritty like a dense pinot can be, and not too sweet, i think they did a great job with the grapes, but the rest of the beer is sort of plain to me for what it is. deep ruby red color to this and a nice airy white head on top, it looks nice in the teku glass. aroma is tart red grape skins and a little red wine itself, some sweet oak and a tiny bit of tannic acidity. the grapes really lead the flavor charge, i dont get a ton of malt behind them, more juice than beer in some ways, grape must depth though, really nice. the oak is soft but evident, but i think what is missing for me more than anything is more yeast character. its got a little sourness but the grape and wood density cover up any funkiness or interesting elements there, so it seems sort of overly simple in that aspect, a nice developed bretty weirdness would be welcomed here. still, the grapes are really forward in here and it ends up presenting itself like wine. i can always count on these guys to entertain me with their beers. if you like the beer wine hybrids, pick this one up, but its not as complex and nuanced as many of their beers in this category...

Another nice sour from Stillwater. A subtle blend of flavors over the typical Stillwater sour ale base. Not too tart with a touch of sweetness. The oak barely comes through in the finish with the slightest hint of smokiness. Overall delicious. yb

Pours between amber and ruby with minimal lacing but moderate head that leaves lingering foam. Smells of sour fruit, but really faint. Taste is sour, fermented fruit, malt. Taste is similar with pronounced sourness. Feels somewhat refreshing. Not exceptional but well done.
