Very Good

Notes: Absurd amount (5# per BBL) of new school German hops Manderina Bavaria & Huell Mellon are accented with Mosaic & Centennial. Providing aromas of melon, tropical fruit and fresh cut grass, riding along with distinct noble bitterness upon a foundation of oats and lactose.

Pours a matte golden yellow color. Thin white head dissipates leaving a ring of foam along the outside of the beer with some sudsy lacing.

Smell has notes melon, orange, tangerine, grass, weed, and cantaloupe. Aroma is more dank/grassy than fruity although it is still somewhat fruity.

Taste has notes of weed, grass melon, orange, orange rind, tangerine, cantaloupe, and tangerine rind. Quickly passes to a strong bitterness that lingers through the finish and stays on the tongue.

Feel is smooth but light. Moderately carbonated with a bit of a fizzy feeling in the mouth.

Overall I was torn on reviewing this - its supposed to be a NE style IPA so I reviewed it with that in mind. For the style it falls short - very bitter and much more grassy than I'd expect for the style. As an IPA, its alright - roughly average.

Anyone guessed the theme for tonight’s double-header yet? It’s pretty obvious, if you missed it I can’t help you. You need to see a professional. I know I’m called Doc, however this is a moniker – I’m not a real doctor. With that out of the way I’m looking forward to this Stillwater brew, who coincidentally have collaborated with tonight’s other brewer: Collective Arts [this is not the theme, nice try!]. What we have here is another New England IPA. This time with Manderina Bavaria & Huell Melon hops (OK this is going to be an interesting beer) along with Mosaic & Centennial, oats and lactose for body. Quite an intriguing hop bill, though I suspect the Mosaic/Centennial hops will overpower the German ones, let’s see then.

Poured from a 473ml can into a nonic pint.

A: Ok, well, not a NEIPA here then – slight hazed golden body with a billowy white head that descends leaving sticky lace on the side of the glass. When I say “not a NEIPA” I mean in the sense that the body is almost clear, it’s missing that haze, but who cares if the golden liquid inside tastes great? Not I. 7/10.

S: Floral with honeydew melon accents, glad the Huell Melon made it past the gate-keeping Mosaic/Centennial then… hints of mandarin and orange blossom, Juicy Fruit chewing gum, it’s surprising how muted that Mosaic/Centennial combo is, TBH I was not expecting the Manderina Bavaria & Huell Melon to shine this much, especially that honeydew melon character – noice! 9/10.

T: Not a NEIPA, cool, let’s quickly get past it because this is one moreish American IPA. Flavour is upfront with that honeydew melon and orange blossom honey sweetness followed by hints of mandarin, lemon, Juicy Fruit chewing gum leading in to a biscuit malt base, hint of pineapple, and light citric bitterness in the finish. Aftertaste lingers with the above fruity combo – top-notch stuff here. 9/10.

M: Medium, almost heavy-bodied, with a full/dense carbonation. Weird, didn’t see evidence of secondary but this was just as gassy as Life in the Clouds. 7/10.

D: This is one tasty IPA, balanced superbly by Stillwater – the fact that they were able to give those German hops a chance to shine is a testament to their skill as a brewer, armchair brewers like myself will note: Manderina Bavaria & Huell Melon hops have a lower alpha acid content than Mosaic & Centennial, so the fact they were able to balance this so well is admirable (brewing is more art than science IMO). Mouthfeel could have used less carbonation though. 8/10.

Food match: A smart beer like this deserves a smart gourmet pizza: Okonomiyaki.

American IPA brewed with oats and lactose sugar. Poured from a can into a Woodburn tulip. The pour is very hazy, but not what I would call cloudy, and a rough pour produces 2 fingers of rocky white head with average retention. On the nose I get fresh toast with lemon curd and grapefruit.

Medium-light body with a delicate feel and a light, crisp, hoppy flavor. Follows the nose with a light malty kiss up front followed by a pleasant array of citrus fruit. Lemons and grapefruit are the key players here, but there's also a musty, chalky note that I don't care for. The lactose seems to balance it out and makes for a gentle IPA with no abrasive bitterness.

Overall, a good IPA with nice flavors, but I like 'em just a bit more punishing than this. They don't have to be palate-wreckers, but they do need to remind me that I'm drinking an IPA.

another interesting and delicious hop forward beer from thee guys, this one jazzed up with oats and lactose and really frothy and rich feeling, starchy and sweeter and nice for the cold weather i think. the hops are great, sort of crystalline and oily and new, i get melon and pineapple and spruce, very natural but very intensely dosed, this is hoppy as it gets, but the bitterness is tempered, more of the oils and essences of the hops, sort of northwestern and new school at the same time, well dry hopped, and extended forever by the milk sugar and the oats in here, i like what they do for the hops. clearer in appearance than it sounds like it should be, and certainly brighter looking and more refined than what a lot of brewers are doing with ipa like this right now, juicy cut melon and lime in the nose, more pineapple and pine in the flavor, lots going on, but a very cohesive whole. i love the freshness and the almost candied nature of the hops, i like all the body, and the impossibly tidy finish for what this is. bubbly and satisfying, this is really good ipa, unconventional but also full of common sense. i really dug this one, a really unique hop profile here, and just a great can of beer. these guys are on fire!

Cloudy orange/gold beer with a dense off white head. Globs of lacing left behind. The aroma is sweet with some bubblegum, melon, peach, orange and floral hops. Sweet with a lot of melon, peach and floral notes. Nice bitterness and clean finish. Quite a nice beer.

Cloudy golden with moderate carbonation and white floaters. Topped with a finger of white head.

Smells of pineapple, tropical fruits, and caramel candy.

Tastes of canned pineapple juice, light caramel notes, and soda water.

Light, crisp and soda like feel.

Got in Redding Nov 16th, 2018, where I am drinking it. Decent but very light feeling.

Poured 16oz can into snifter. It has a golden haze color with a fluffy 2 finger white head that quickly fades and leaves minimal lacing on my glass. Aroma is grassy, floral, with plenty of citrus zest and rind. There is a bitterness to the citrus flavor that reminds me of lemon, orange, and grapefruit rind. It also has a non distinctive, light tropical flavor, but ends on a bitter note. Medium light feel that is soft, yet finishes quite dry. Pretty solid IPA, but at a higher price.
