Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.60%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Over the ages the term ’cellar door’ has numerously been referred to as the most beautiful term in the English language. Upon setting out to create the first summer addition to the Stateside line up of ales; the feeling that almost instantly came to me was that of beauty & cleansing. Many summer offerings tend to lack the complexity of their bigger, colder season counterparts; so my goal was to craft an ale of extreme balance with a delicate complexity that allows for contemplation while also providing quaffable refreshment. Starting with a base of German wheat & pale malts this crisp slightly hazy foundation was then accented with a blend of Sterling & Citra hops providing a intricate blend of herbal grass & tangerine citrus flavors and aroma. To pull this all together and to complete the ’cleansing’ aspect of my vision I gently finished the ale off with a touch of white sage, lending a mild earthy spice character to the blend. Of course let’s not forget our house saison yeast that brought all the elements together leaving a dry yet intricate finish.

12oz can, served in a snifter glass. Pours a slightly cloudy medium-darker golden yellow body, one finger thick white head, good retention, bits of lacing. Smell is sage, mango, orange peel, slight sugary grain sweetness, touch of caramel, bit of straw. Flavour is tropical fruit, sage, light sugary grain, caramel, touch of hay, minerality which lingers into the backend, with a bit of a floral and tropical fruit bite finishing things up. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, good carbonation, tons of flavour, bitter floral and slight sweet tropical fruit. Good stuff for sure, really nice that this is in cans.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Chimay goblet.

L - Pale straw colored pour with a thin white head. A hazy beer.

S - Lemon, sweet tart, wet straw, yeast.

T - Sage, grass, medicinal bitterness, slight hints of apple skin in the aftertaste.

F - Dry feel, moderate carbonation

If I were to describe this beer in one word it would be "green" All of the flavors are grassy and herbacious with the slight hint of green apple. A very pleasant saison overall and another fine offering from Stillwater.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a mildly hazy burnt yellow almost orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated nicely. Lacing really spider webbed nicely. The smell started off with some nice sweet bready malts opening up into sweet citrus and then some light earthy sweet tones. Semi-grassy sweetness with herbal qualities balancing nicely. The taste was mainly herbally sweet with a nice light citrus to balance in the flavor. Breadiness clings in the aftertaste with a running sweet finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a semi-sweet stickiness rolling over my tongue. Fairly sessionable for the most part. Overall, I’d say this was a nice sweet bready saison. I’d have again.

A: Deep gold to light orange, clear, bubbly and a huge foamy/rocky/soapy eggshell white head that persists and laces well.

A: Smells of lemongrass, citrus soda, and sage. Funny that it mentions being brewed with sage, but is one of the harder elements to detect. Seems to have a mild vanilla and oaky (spelling o_O ) aroma as well, and maybe a touch of acidity.

T: Sage is much more dominant in the flavor. Lemon lime soda comes through underneath and finishes with a woody earthiness. Sweetness seems to be only in citric form.

F: Very carbonated, almost seltzer like, and bone dry. I'd say it is balanced, but it's mild funk and earthy bitterness make me lean just barely to the bitter side of the spectrum.

O: This is a unique farmhouse ale for sure. It lacks the usual funk and barnyard or hay-like common attributes, but is delicious and refreshing nonetheless. Would definitely revisit. Cheers!

12 oz bottle, best by February 2018

Pours an orange tinted gold with a nice and foamy white head. The head has good retention and leaves some sticky lacing on the glass.

Aromas are a pleasant blend of floral/herbal/grassy/earthiness, citrusy tangerine and sage.

Flavors follow the nose with a nice mixture of floral, grassy notes, fruity citrus, earthiness, and spice.

Mouth feel is medium bodied, finish is dry and clean. This farmhouse ale is insanely drinkable.

Overall, this is a wow beer for me. So much complexity yet so balanced and drinkable. Outstanding.

Bottled 5/17/15
12oz. bottle poured into a large wine glass (except for the last ounce or so).

Almost one finger of white fizzy head sat atop the hazy, pale golden body. It gave off a mostly earthy aroma that was a little musty with notes of yeast and sage that were less pronounced. The taste was slightly tart and dry then moved to some mild bitterness with herbal and sage flavors. There was some astringency which was the only thing I didn't like. At first it was finishing clean but as I drank it coated my tongue making it less so. The carbonation was medium to high with a light body that was frothy.

Hazy, yellow to orange beer with a high, white, fluffy head.

Nose: Grass, hay, stable, funk, caramel, citrus and vanilla.
Taste: Yeast, floral esters, hops, citrus, grass, hay, bread and caramel malt.
Mouth: Medium body. High carbonation. Dry ending.

Great saison!

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This nice saison pours a chill
hazed medium amber with straw highlights and a very nice head of
white foam that subsides to a thick ring, thin layer, and features some very nice
sudsy lacing. Nose of sage, soft wheat, earthy yeast, subtle sweet honey malts,
and herbal grassy hops. Flavors follow the nose with grassy hops and lightly
sweet sage blending with subtle citrus and smooth soft wheat. The "house yeast"
is very prominent on the rear of the taste with earthy notes that finish moderately
dry. Nice body; medium carbonation is lightly crisp and plays off the balanced
elements very nicely and as noted before finishes dry.

Solid for the style and very nice.
