Pumpkin AlePumpkin Ale

Brewed by:
Rivertown Brewery & Barrel House
Ohio, United States

Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
A little bit of trick combined with a whole lot of treat, our spice infused Pumpkin Ale blends dark sugars, fresh pumpkin and a selection of memorable harvest spices that come together in a well balanced, medium bodied, rich, copper hued ale. With just enough sweet to balance out the spice, this is how we do pumpkin pie.

A: Came out copper with a half finger head of white foam. The head dies down relatively quick and leaves only a patchy hint that it was ever there at all. No lacing was observed.

S: Predomininatly pumpkin the spice, unlike a lot of other beers of this style, is relatively low key.

T:A rather mild but good pumpkin ale. The pumpkin is at the forefront and the spices are just right; not overbearing just present enough to add complexity.

M: A bit too thin and watery.

O: A good effort from a local brewery I definitely would try this again or more appropriately try this again annualy to see if the brewery makes changes to the recipe.

Pumpkin Ale brewed by Rivertown Brewing Co with an ABV 5.0% This brew pours out dark amber color with a small white head. The smell is sweet with pumpkin and some grains. I like the smell of this brew it is like pumpkin pie. The taste is pumpkin spice with a mid taste. Pumpkin Ale has a nice balance to it there is nothing over powering in this brew. Rivertown Brewing Co. did a nice job with this one. I would by this brew again. Over all I'm giving this brew a 4.75 out of 5.

Appearance is copper orange. Little off white head that disappears almost immediately. Zero lacing. Aroma of pumpkin, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon. Fairly subdued, and that's not necessarily bad. Taste is pumpkin which is predominant, then i also get nutmeg that lingers into the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Overall, this is an easy drinking pumpkin ale, which is the kind i personally enjoy the most.

Pours crimson ruby hued with light tan head forming thick dwindling quickly leaves fine speckled lacing. Aromatics spicy cinnamon and spice combo with some flesh like tones of actual pumpkin gourds, I'm usually not a huge fan of these fall releases but somehow I always feel inclined to try them when I see them. Flavors are muddled between sweet semi burnt sugars and bitter spice additions, the palate is coated with traditional pumpkin pie spice, some flesh tones of pumpkin and then the spice dies down almost leaving a bit of watered down notes. Makes for a refreshing drinkable 5% beer not one of the cloying versions that you can't finish one, but at the same time not as extreme as some of those imperial pumpkin ales out there that have become more popular in the last few years. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied ample carbonation periods of dry/lingering bitterness from the spice additions finishes surprisingly clean and refreshing on the palate. Overall a balanced pumpkin ale that won't completely assault your palate, and you may like it if you like this type of fall release as the weather cools here in the Ohio Valley it's actually working quite well. It's been dipping into the 50s at night in mid August.

Beer #7 8/9/13

This beer looks the part, a dark orange color. An off-white cap manages a bit more than half a finger and, with moderate retention, leaves light creamy lace.
The smell catches me off guard, as I sometimes find Rivertown's beers underwhelming in terms of depth and how the elementse work together. This one's got it, though: it's all pumpkin, butter and spices, nothing overdone but all working in tandem. Nice.
It's definitely buttery, but not overly so. Spices are strongest in the flavor but, again, not overdone. A bit of pumpkin flesh is in there. As far as taste, a boost in the pumpkin itself would be the best improvement, but it's good.
A medium body holds a firm carbonation while remaining crisp and smooth through the entire session.

Served on-tap in a standard pint glass. Appears a dark brown to copper color with a thin off-white head. No lacing to speak of.

Nose is all cinnamon. Overall the aroma its pretty muted. Some sweet malts but that's about it. Taste is very similar. Up front it's all sweet and then turns into cinnamon spiciness. Almost no pumpkin flavor to speak of. Definitely disappointed with the lack of pumpkin since it is a pumpkin ale.

Mouthfeel is pretty standard. Medium bodied, average carbonation. Goes down really easy. Overall, a disappointment. Lack of nose and flavor in general and the lack of pumpkin is a downer.

A- pours a slightly hazy auburn-brown color with a small white creamy head, decent retention leaving a thin layer floating on top

S- cinnamon and nutmeg with some raw pumpkin pie, sweet molasses with a touch of ginger

T- cinnamon flavors stand out up front with some ginger flavors mid-palate, cola, some vegetal notes with a dry finish highlighted by a bit more cinnamon

M- medium body and carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and crisp finish

O- nice mix of aromas, middle of the road flavor with nothing special but nothing offensive.

This pumpkin ale assumes all the rich qualities of pumpkin bread as it takes the deep brown and highlights it with dark oranges. The head was fizzy and fleeting but collared to a froth.

The aromas are so weak but once you pick them up they are nicely appropriate. A malty base meets a spicy pumpkin in a whisper of a scent.

The flavor is greatly more robust than the scent as a rich malty breadiness hits nutmeg and cinnamon. The flavors are more to pumpkin bread and less to pumpkin pie as the malt tempers the candy sweetness. I really like this take on the pumpkin ale as it has a richness and thickness to it without holding to the overly sweetened pumpkin pie movement.

Picked this up because I can't resist a local pumpkin beer

Pours an orange-ish copper amber color with a head that quickly fades

smells typical pumpkin-y, nice nutmeg, pretty sweet

Tastes more like pumpkin pie than most. Nice combination of the spice flavors. Finishes a bit bitter but this is beer, not an actual pie so I'm ok with it.

average carbonation, could stand to be a bit thicker on the feel.

Not bad, I'd have to say it tastes more like pumpkin pie than other, more prominent Pumpkin beers. I'm overall not blown away by the style which limits my score just a bit.
