I was so disappointed by Ojos Negros. I was hoping for something similar to Liefman’s Cuvee-Brut where the beer was tart but fruity with decent carbonation. Instead, Ojos Negros is flat, dry, and sour sans fruit. Perhaps I aged the bottle too long or maybe my expectations were wrong.

Pours sort of an amber color with an off-white head. The nose is full of cherry and blackberry with a mild spiced cider note. A hint of oak, lemon, and a slight candy sweetness. Minimal funk, mostly grass, and a touch of vinegar. The flavor has a bit of oak to go along with intense fruitiness. Lots of cherry and blackberry notes, sweet tarts, oak, and mild vinegar. Not bad, but not a huge fan of this either.

750mL bottle poured into pint glasses due to lack of glassware - thanks for this extra, I forget who sent it at the moment

Hazy golden orange pour with a pinkish hue. Crop of white head dissipates pretty quickly, leaving little retention or lacing behind.

Acidic fruit in the nose with funky yeast and dark fruit. Blackberries and oak with red wine and grape skins.

Snap of biting sourness up front with blackberries, red grapes and currants. Oaky and vinous with plenty of red wine character and an earthy touch. Funky wild yeast, barnyard and jammy berry fruit sweetness. Mild backbone with oak and red wine, followed by continuing acidic sourness in the finish.

Medium body, higher carbonation, bubbly, dry and lingering on the tongue. A solid dark wild ale with plenty of berry fruit flavor, but doesn't quite stack up to some of the top flight sour producers.

Bottle to tulip.

A: Murkey greenish-purple (strange I know). The colors are very stratified in a tulip - gets darker at the bottom of the glass. Highly viscous resembling apple cider.

S: Tart. Notes of sour fruit, dust, sour-yeast, oak, and vinegar. Moderate amount of funk.

T: Tart. Notes of sour red grapes, red wine, apples, and persimmon. Strong wine flavor.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, moderately smooth. THICK.

O: This sour came highly recommended and I was a bit let down. I love sours and I find the feel of Rivertown sours to be unappealing, and this falls in line. Compared to other Rivertowns, this has higher carbonation, but is still very think and almost syrupy. The color is strange and too cloudy. The fruit notes are very good and the wine is certainly noticeable. If you like sours, try this, but I will not go back for seconds.
