Poured into a Bruery tulip. Bottled on 12/05/2012.

A: Produces a huge rocky white head. Thin and sudsy with a pale gold body. Very thing lacing but a good thick cap of head hangs about.

S: Lots of bright citrus fruit up front, white wine and a juicy lactic tang in the middle. Toasted oak with a musty, dirty brett hanging around.

T: An acidic, citric sourness with lots of white whine tartness leading into some apple vinegar and stinky cheese. Rounded out with oak barrel and lots of old wood and musty hay. Lingering acidity with a dough maltyness.

Mf: Crisp, drying and effervescent. Great drinkability. Despite the sharp flavors you keep going back for more.

O: One of the better geuze I've had. Lots of those really bizarre funky and sour flavors that only come from a lambic. Very easy drinking and enjoyable. Worth the cost.

750ml bottled on April 27 2010. Served in a Russian River stemmed glass

Appearance: Golden yellow color with less than a finger of soapy white head, which dissipated quickly to a thin collar. Slightly hazy in the glass with quite a bit of visible carbonation

Smell: Lemon, vinegar, oak, musty basement, barnyard, grass, green apple.

Taste: Acidic lemon juice, lemon rind, quite a bit of barnyard funk, white wine grape, a bit of lactic sourness in the finish/aftertaste. Overall sourness is medium.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and crisp mouthfeel. Carbonation is bordering on high, but works well for the style. Finishes dry.

Overall: Really good gueuze. This is one of the classics for a reason.

1999 Vintage - It pours a dark gold with some orange tint, but it is a bit too hazy to look nice. Of course the look of this beer is by far the worst characteristic. The big head even seems to dissipate too fast. The aroma is musty, barnyard, apple, and lemon zest. I am salivating already. The sourness is big and up front, then the horseblanket coats my tongue before the honey and floral notes that fade to a dry yeasty finish. An excellent gueuze. I can't wait to try the other vintages that I have stashed away.

375ml, lot 10/12/2009.

Lightly hazy, apple-juice gold with a frothy head. Lots of effervescence and decent retention.

Aroma is pungent and excellent. Cidery, funky, and fruity with notes of sour apples, strawberry and citrus rind.

Flavor is dry and very tart. Funky, musty and earthy notes are complimented by a citrusy flavor. Less fruity than the aroma. There is some bitterness both from the hops and the wild yeast funkiness. Reminiscent of acidic white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc. Mouthfeel is fluffy and soft with very high, champagne-like carbonation. For those who can handle the sourness, this is a very refreshing and drinkable beer.

I enjoyed the Drie Fonteinen Gueuze very much. I am no expert, but I found the other classic examples of the style (Girardin, Hanssens, etc.) smoother than this particular Oude Gueuze.

Bottled on January 22, 2004. Appears hazy, and the color seems to alternate between a bright orange and yellow. The carbonation is subtle, while a nice ring of foam lingers about the edges. The aroma is beautifully sour, with notes of lemon, and peach, plus an oaked vinegar spice. Behind the tart fruity esters there is the faintest hint of cherry sweetness coming through in the background. The intitial taste is a blast of sour, woody funk. The sourness is pretty intense but does soften some after a few sips. The finish fades somewhat with a dry cheese-like touch. Nice flavor, but lacking the mix of fruits evident in the aroma. The mouthfeel is light and smooth, with semi-sharp carbonation. This is a very nice Gueze and one of my favorites, not that I have tried many. I particularly enjoyed the nose on this one, and if it were available in my area I might get a few bottles and cellar them...
