Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
War & Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout aged with Peace Coffee's Guatemalan Organic Dark Roast. We measure out a pound of whole beans per barrel of beer and add it directly to our tanks, then allow it to infuse for nearly a week. It's a combination so natural, you may forget that stout and coffee once existed without each other.

Big thanks to my buddy Terry for sharing one of these with me on his recent trip to Minneapolis. This was an impressive coffee stout. Perhaps I was so impressed because honestly, my expectations were not that high. No disrespect at all, I just wasn't expecting these kind of flavors based on the small samplings I've had from Fulton. I was just expecting a coffee stout like so many other breweries churn out. Decent but nothing on the wow levels. This beauty looks exactly like a stout should, Lots of carbonation in the pour. Dark as night with a beautiful half inch espresso colored head. I am a coffee stout guy but sometimes brews can be overkill with coffee and all you get is the bitterness and none of the roasty bean flavor or the balance is just shit. Too much of one or the other. But this was the opposite as I got alot of the roasty coating and only a hint of bitterness on the finish. Upon reading more about this Beer, it's aged on the coffee beans as opposed to being brewed and blended. I have attempted this with some home brews but have not been able to come close to the flavors they get out of this. The stout looks thin on appearance and I was expecting that to be its main flaw. But again to my surprise, full body taste. Medium body forsure. Coats the whole mouth and tongue with its warm caramel goodness. Definitely going to take my buddy up on a few more of these bottles and sit on them for some cold winter nights. I can see even more balance with some time. Cheers Terry!

I'm apparently in the minority opinion here, but I find War & Peace considerably less appealing than Worthy Adversary, which I assume is the base beer, given the identical style and ABV. The Guatemalan coffee adds too much earthy bitterness that muddies up the flavors from the base; I would have preferred a different coffee with more nuttiness or complementary aromatics to be used, personally.

This is one impressive coffee stout. Brewed with chocolate malt and conditioned on whole bean Peace coffee, the aromas and taste of dark chocolate and espresso dominate without overwhelming. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel with a nice balance of sweet and bitter. Excellent beer!

Grabbed last April, and let it sit in my cellar.
Look: War and Peace pours a semi viscous dark brown, almost black, but the edges show signs of brown when put to a light. The head is a dark tan, what head shows up. Swirling does yield head though.

Smell: Straight forward coffee, but slightly muted, and I'm guessing that's due to aging. After swirling, chocolate makes an appearance as well.

Taste: coffee, chocolate, and a roasted malt finish. The taste is better than the smell, not an easy accomplishment usually.

Feel: Medium full to full bodied, some carbonation in there, and a finish that isn't especially dry. Good stuff.

Overall: Fresh, I remember not liking this, but after revisiting this beer I would definitely pick up another four pack. The taste and mouthfeel stand out to me.
