On-tap at Longfellow Grill in Minneapolis, 8 May 2014.

Pours clear golden-orange amber. One finger of white head, good retention and excellent lacing.

Smell is a bit odd, the way the saison yeast and the spice of the rye mix. The yeast brings a warmth that, in combination with the spice, reminds me of some pilseners.

Taste is fine. Some buzz, some bite, but a little on the dull side. Grainy with a moderate bitterness that, though half-hearted, is a little more than I'd like. Not my favorite, and lacking most of the elements I look for in a saison, other than the spice (which is buoyed by the rye).

Feel is quite good. Medium-bodied, with a nice fizz and buzz. Zippy.

Lots of z's in here. Buzz, zest, fizz. I find it more a rye beer than a saison, and while at times the two pieces work well, it's not impressive as either or as a combo. Meh.

Glad to see this in bottles finally & I’m optimistic this will be as good as it has been on tap. Rye! 12 oz. of beer in the glass.

The pour comes out crystal clear ruby red with a bit of non-showy head. The nose is confused but pleasant with a lot of fruitiness that’s probably coming from the yeast, , very sweet, without much rye. Pretty tame.

Rye Saison is a style I’d like to see much more of here, there, & everyfuckingwhere. This, on the other hand, is nothing like what I’ve had on tap previously. The beer is soaked in fruit juice – you know when you make the frozen grape juice, get distracted by one of your kids eating a couch, then go back & accidentally put four cans instead of three in with the mix? – like that. Like thin, watery juice from the amalgamate berry. A kick of peppery rye peeks out & saves the beer from the drain, there’s a sharp bitterness I associate with hops, a vague echo of lowland yeast. Gets tougher to swallow as it warms.

Just not much here, & definitely not the beer I had on tap. This continues a sad trend from Fulton – great bombers & tap beers, with a huge step down in their 12 oz. packaging. No saison to be found here; this is borderline bad.

Lots of dark fruit which lends the malt body an Irish Red Ale type aroma and taste, although the funky, slightly tart yeast does make it clear this is a Saison. Spicy rye finish, with some more Irish Red Ale characteristics muddying up the aftertaste. Decent overall, but the odd mix makes it not as refreshing as many Saisons.

Pours from a growler into a craft ale glas and had on tap at the Pig & Fiddle, Fulton and the Bryant Lake Bowl.
A: Bright gold with with a touch of haze under a 2” off-white head that is very persistent and clings to the side of the glass leaving thick ledges of lace.
S: Rye herby spice. There are not a lot of the saison yeast aromas that comes from fermenting at higher temperatures.
T: Has some roggenbier flavor and texture, light fruit, faint banana and citrus.
F: Velvety, creamy, soft carbonation, medium to full body.
O: Has a nice balance between bitter and malt and is easy to drink.

On tap at Fulton's taproom. 16 oz. serving in a shaker glass.

Appearance: Color is a clear golden orange. Lots of rising bubbles and a solid two fingers of white head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty, spicy, and fruity Belgian style aroma with good hints of pepper, rye, and fruit. Upfront Belgian yeast with some pepper, farmhouse funk, and clove. Scent of bubblegum and fruit esters of banana, pear, and citrus hints of orange, lemon, mango, and apricot. Slight hints of candied sugar. Pale malt with hints of grains, straw, wheat, rye, and cracker. Light grassy hop hints. A pretty solid farmhouse aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a spicy, fruity, and yeasty farmhouse style taste with solid notes of fruit, pepper, and rye. Belgian yeast and farmhouse funk with a good mix of spices including notes of pepper and clove. Solid taste of bubblegum. Fruit taste of banana, pear, and green apple along with citrus notes of mango, lemon, orange, and apricot. Bready pale malt with notes of wheat, grains, straw, rye, and cracker. Subtle notes of candied sugar as well as some grassy hops. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a carbonation level on the heavier side. Very crisp and smooth. Fairly drying on the finish.

Overall: A very solid twist on a Saison. Good mix of fruit and spice flavors.
