11.2 oz bottle. Best before 07 2016

Pours hazed near golden amber, nice looking loose yet sturdy near white head. Stays and stays. Goes to a fluffy film and leaves, nice low sheeting and a smattering of higher bits.

Super nice smelling fruity nose. Tropical fruits and pepper abound.

Dry, crisp and very tasty. Bracingly hoppy, earthy, fruity, spicy, yeasty.... Fine stuff, great as a sipper, night capper or with food.

330ml squat bottle. Nice to be able to try these subsequent, additionally hopped versions of the original Tripel Hop.

This beer pours a clear, pale golden yellow colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, loosely foamy, and frothy eggshell white head, which leaves some chunky solar flare lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of pungent - if only somewhat dank - piney, leafy hops up front, underripe orchard stone fruit, earthy yeast, gritty and grainy pale malt, lemon squares, and a further floral, certainly perfumed hoppiness. The taste is still big and hoppy at the outset (the Mosaic earning its guest star role here), with the tropical fruit, forest flora, and minor domestic citrus goodness, all over a still heady yeast-tinged, and sort of bready pale malt sweetness, with some late-arriving herbal, leafy, and yup, perfumed hops, which is my way of indicating that the 19-proof booze has found a way to hide out.

The carbonation is fairly strong in its supportive fizziness, the body a solid medium weight, and generally smooth, the Mosaic varietal capable of minding its own business during this stretch. It finishes off-dry, the base malt not ready to pack 'er in just yet, while the fruitiness of the hops starts edging out the bitterness.

A damned agreeable version of this progenitor of the style - changing up the extra (third, I suppose) hop just keeps things interesting, so kudos to the brewer for that! Here, the Mosaic is large and in charge, aided and abetted by the deft integration of the big ABV, while the yeast keep the noise down to acceptable levels. What's not to like?

A: The beer is slightly hazy yellow in color. It poured with a short bright white head that died down but consistently left lots of wispy lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge.
S: Moderately strong aromas of mangos are present in the nose
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of mangos along with hints of citrus. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes nowhere like being a 9.5% beer and hides its alcohol extremely well.

Poured into a Piraat tulip (wah-waaaah): Light yellow, almost greenish, hazy, with dat Duvel head - fluffy, white, buoyant. It's been a while since I had a Duvel, but this looks lighter than my memory. Plenty of fast, tight nucleation. It's cool seeing the head drop around the edges & this plateau of foam waft around on the meniscus of the beer. Good lacing, no doubt.

Smells of sharp lemon/lime, menthol, slightly chalky, Juicy Fruit, underripe nectarine. Definitely hoppy & estery. Getting the perfume/bathroom soap/bubble formula quality from the Mosaic like back in the day when I first encountered it.

Hits me with more of that nectarine & bubble gum, but sharper & way dryPer than expected. Alcohol moves in soon & hits hard, very boozy spice dryness. Get a little pineapple.

Mouthfeel is intense. Piercing effervescence & mad alcohol heat. For as dry as it is, there's a sweet finish & I don't just feel completely punished.

Wow. It's been a while since I was into trying Belgian IPAs regularly, but I feel like this is a new level. It's one of those rare beers that's challenging without being wrong - it's intentionally formidable, & feels completely deliberate. I've long since blown through having any resistance to heavily-hopped beers, but I feel like a virgin again with this one. I enjoyed this, but even moreso I respect it & the fact that it really made me think.

Poured into a Spiegelau IPA Glass from a 330 ml bottle purchased from a Carrefour Express in Brussels.

APPEARANCE: Crystal clear and light yellow in color - ALIVE with carbonation. Big, thick white head at initial pour that quickly dissipates into a thin white band w/ sparse lacing.

SMELL: Interestingly hoppy yet malty sweet aroma.

TASTE: Parallels the aroma w/ a bitter beginning that fades into a lager-like maltiness and then finishes w/ a nice hop bitterness.

MOUTHFEEL: Smooth mouthfeel that coats the tongue and sparkles with carbonation.

OVERALL: A good European beer -- not quite the same as an American IPA, but a beer that I’d be willing to buy again -- especially when swimming in a sea of German Purity Law homogeneity.

Beautiful golden color with excellent clarity. There's an inch thick billowing eggshell colored head. Brussels lacing. There's a bit of a grapefruit floral hop note in the aroma. You can taste light malt,Belgian candy sugar, and that Belgian ale yeast note. The mouth is moderately carbonated, bone dry and refreshing.

Poured from a 11.2 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy golden orange with a lot of bubbles. Huge four finger white fluffy head that slowly settles into a smaller bubbly layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty. fruity, and spicy Belgian aroma with big hints of citrus fruit and spice. Belgian yeast with hints of funk, clove, and pepper. Pale malt with hints of wheat, grains, straw, and cracker. Big presence of citrus hops with hints of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, lemon, pineapple, and melon. Also the typical Belgian fruit scent of banana, pear, and white grape. Sweet hints of Belgian candied sugar. A very good aroma that is like a Belgian IPA.

Taste: Like it smells, a fruity, yeasty, and spicy Belgian IPA like taste with a big presence of citrus fruit and spice. Belgian yeast with some notes of funk along with clove and pepper spicing. Sweet notes of Belgian candied sugar. Big zesty taste of citrus hops with notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, melon, and pineapple. Fruit esters of bananas, white grapes, and pear. Subtle note of blueberry among the citrus. A very good hopped up Belgian taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a high level of carbonation. Juicy and slightly oily. Spritzy and pretty drying on the finish.

Overall: A very good hopped up twist on a great classic Belgian ale. Good taste of citrus fruits.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of July 2016. Picked up just the other day from Trembling Madness in York. The 2014 edition of this brew is hopped with Saaz and Styrian Goldings, followed by dry-hopping with Mosaic. Sounds promising...

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A bright golden hue with faint haze and plentiful carbonation. Yields a massive head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before settling as a thick surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of fruity hops and yeast esters, with hints of tropical fruits, mild citrus, grass/hay, subtle spice, earthy yeast, light malt and faint stewed hops. A twinge of buttery diacetyl in the background - surprising for a live beer. Pretty good.

Tastes of fruity aromatic hops and yeast esters, with a dry, spicy finish. Notes of tropical fruits, lime, citrus, grass/hay, mild spice, earthy yeast, subtle malt and stewed hops. A touch of diacetyl lurks in the background along with a warming hint of booze. Well-attenuated, followed by a mild, spicy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with pleasant carbonation and good body. Quite astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of yeast esters, fruity aromatic hops and stewed leaves.

Mmmm - lovely. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour have a satisfying blend of fruity hops and yeast esters. It retains the essence of the original yet the hops add something extra. The only disagreeable note is the diacetyl, which is sufficient to be noticeable. Pleasant body. Another solid version of this beer - well worth sampling if you have the chance.

Poured a beautiful cloudy golden color with a one finger, fluffy white head that grew as the beer sat. Abundant lacing was left down the glass. Quite nice looking, very true to form. Scents of sour, lemon-like funk, slight barnyard funk and sweet, spicy Belgian yeast phenols, nutmeg with hints of clove. Undertones of tropical fruit, mostly pineapple and mango, notes of citrus zest and tangerine flesh and candi sugar notes. Slight hints of biscuit-like malt are also discernible in the background. An excellent, well rounded, hoppy, Belgian aroma. It combines the best of IPAs and the best of Belgian Strong Golden ales into a very pleasant whole. Flavor begins with a nice bitterness with notes of citrus, mostly lime and juicy tangerine, and herbal hop bitterness with some phenolic spiciness and a bit of sugary sweetness from the candi sugar and what I believe is pilsner malt. In the middle lime flavors continue to shine through, alongside a stronger herbal hop character and a hint of alcohol with notes of clove spiciness. Finish is dry with notes of herbal hops, citrus zest, alcohol and clove. Aftertaste is spicy clove and bitter herbal hop flavors. A very well done flavor profile. It captures the character of the hops used as well as the character of a fine Belgian Strong Golden ale and combines them in an excellent overall flavor profile that is spicy, herbal, fruity and faintly boozy all at once. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation and a smooth, slick feel, hiding the ABV. A wonderfully smooth feel, easy to drink and quite appealing. Overall this is a wonderful Belgian IPA. It combines the best of the Belgian Strong Golden ales with the best of hops and creates a complex, appealing, flavorful, aromatic and wonderfully drinkable beer. Highly recommended, despite its steep price tag.
