Dark reddish brown color with a light tan head that recede to remain just covering the top of the beer. Nice lacing remains.
The smell is of dark cereal malts; the taste is of dark plum, raisin and malt, with a peppery yeast finish.
The beer is medium to full bodied thanks in part to the high carbonation that releases with each sip.
Overall, an very enjoyable Belgian ale.

Had the blonde and the tripel ages ago in Paris...the tripel was pretty good. Let's check the brune out.

Strong aromas of deep, dark malt and a little chococlate. Really complex. Alcohol is noticeable and inviting. Appearance is reddish brown, that glows in the fading light. Pretty and smooth head. This is a real deep dark brune...not red like some others.

Taste is a little effervescent, something I also remember from the tripel. Like there is a little too much carbonation. It's not smooth like a Chimay Bleu. As it warms up and settles, I think the taste and feel will improve. It does.

Still, the feel is quite thin and still effervescent. There is a light chocolatey aftertaste, and the initial flavour on the tongue is quite bitter, which I like. I really hate brune beers that are sweet. Luckily this isn't!. I had some pretty terrible brune beers in the past, mostly in Paris (Pelforth I think was quite bad).

Improves lots as it warms up and as the carbonation settles. Flavour is pretty impressive. It's like bitter powdered dark chocolate. There is lots of complexity and some of the flavours are almost similar to a complex red wine. Perfect for a winter's night in a bar with snow outside. Not that I am in a bar or that there is snow or that it's even winter, but it would definitely taste best then.

This is possibly the best choclatey beer that I have had. I think I prefer it just to the Chimay Red. It really improves as it settles and warms up. And actually it makes me feel happy. It doesn't even have a typical Belgian taste, as in a Duvel or a Tripel...it's a little more smooth, with more of a subtle Belgian malty kick. The balance between the dark malt with the bitter choclateyness, with the alcohol coming through, is a little heavenly. And it is made by monks, so I'm hoping by drinking this I will be more likely to go to heaven. I'd rather drink this than the wine they give you at communion/mass, for sure. It's great to know that my sins are being forgiven.

Critisicms? Takes a while to settle down. Not as smooth as a Chimay Bleu, but better than a Chimay Red. I think it's really amazing, better than I was expecting, as usually I prefer tripels, dark beers and mega hoppy IPA's from the West Coast. So it's surprising that I am giving this such a high rating, but it deserves it for sure.

Small bottle in Vientiane, Laos. Reddish brown colour with a short-lived light brown foam. Lively carbonation. Fruit and malt, some caramel and yeast. Balanced flavours. Delightful.

Tobacco,Dried fruits and a small hint of chocolate. This beer has an ABV that will give you a small buzz, lovely medium mouthfeel and nice medium flavour. Bought this on a journey from North Wales to Belgium in a small Del Haize supermarket, if you like Belgian dubbel then be sure to try this, it’s a super example of what a double should taste like although not as good as Westmalle

Drank 6/2/21 @ Hopleaf.

Semi-opaque brown/purple appearance.

Nice white head; minimal lace.

Candlewax, pipe tobacco, tart cherry & faint allspice notes in the nose.

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Clove & mild tart cherry flavors up front; allspice & faint dry oak notes on the finish. No booze heat.

Smelled better than it tasted; good, not great.
