A: Beautiful chestnut body and head, rocky, lasting, lacing. Yes it matters!

S: Liquor like, Cointreau, is the first impression, along with lots of grass, then blend of dark malts with plenty of fruit notes: apple, plum, figs, cherry. Want more of it, still subtle as it warms.

T: Follows the smell, again with the after-dinner drink quality. In this case, savored on the ferry home. Flavorful, malty dark caramel, spice, brown sugar, cocoa, latte, and stout. Sweet, fruit liqueurs, followed by drying, slight bitterness, into a crisp, roasty finish. COMPLEX!

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus w moderate carbonation.

O: Must try. Unusual grassy and liqueur like Belgian. Recommended.

From a 750 ml bottle purchased at Ommegang. Date is 10/4/14 so tasted about 8 month before best by date.
Beautiful pour, Light brown with red. Tan head that is very thick and fluffy fills about 1/4 of the glass.
Sweet smell of cherries.
Big fruity taste and a good warming feeling , you know there is alcohol in there.
A very good dubbel.

Uma grande dubbel. Ela é da escola mais avermelhada do estilo, e possui uma interessante peculiaridade. Ela me pareceu seca, assim como vinho. Esse foi uma aspecto agradável. É um cerveja equilibrada e bem gostosa. Mais uma ótima cerveja da Maredsous.

From a 330 ml bottle into a chalice.

A: translucent cherry brown with a one finger head that breaks leaving some decent lacing.

S: caramel, malts, some fruits and definite Belgian yeast.

T: dark fruits, cherries, malts and yeast. A nice sweet finish.

M: highly carbonated, full body.

O: my best friend swears by Maredsous, he says it is o e of his favorites from when he grew up in Belgium. I enjoyed this beer, and it became even more enjoyable as it came up in temperature. As it warmed I found the flavor improved, the spice came out and the sweet finish became more prominent. All in all a very nice beer.

A: Translucent Brown almost a bit red when under light

S: Spot on for an Abbey. Sweet fruits, apples, cherries, malt and yeast.

T: Doesn't taste like it smells at all. Kind of dry for it being so sweet smelling. Somewhat sour and finishes with an unexpected bitter aftertaste.

F: Super carbonated the way a good Belgian should feel.

Overall it's a decent ale, but not as sweet as I was expecting.

33cl Bottle: BBD Mar 16, poured slowly into a Westmalle chalice on 16th Nov 13.

The full beige head hung around but shrank to a thin covering fairly swiftly: the mahogany red/brown body was clean and clear (I didn't allow any sediment to leave the bottle).

The nose was all malt, semi-sweet molasses with fruity undertones and a yeasty feel.

The taste was dark fruits, yeasty and again fairly sweet, the malts giving very little away to the hop content. I like the sweeter, maltier brews, but this didn't sit right for me (I had a few beers before this actually).

Thin for the alcohol level and slightly lacking in depth of flavour, I think this might help to give me a hang-over in the morning: water next!

A: dark with ruby reflexes. Lacing ok, good carbonation.
S: caramel and malt, somewhat roasty.
T: not as sweet as the smell. Some toffee.
M: caramel back again. Very hoppy.
O: A solid and complex beer but perhaps too sweet.

Very good with strong Belgian dishes, like stoemp

Pours a chestnut brown with ruby hues. Deep color that slightly hazed. Fat tan head of creamy foam that falls to a thick cap and wet lace.

Nose is subtle and gentle. It has dark fruit like plum and a light sweet molasses. The grains are toasted and there is a bit of bread. The lightest scent of cocoa can be found but no alcohol. Yeast is earthy and it has a bit of spice. As it warms the spices come out more and the character lets itself be seen only slowly. Touch of clove and a bit of mineral. No alcohol on the nose.

Taste is smooth and gentle. The dried fruit and the chocolate are inseparable and the chocolate is terribly light. It makes you reach a little to find it and that brings you to a delightful middle. There's some anise but it's not sharp and some drying alcohol as well as a dry malt character that is a touch bitter in itself. The hops give a light gentle bitter for accent and the finish is earthy and lightly sweet.

The body of this beer is soft and yet it's full without heaviness. The alcohol is sturdy so be careful because it drinks so easily. There is the faintest hint of smoke in the finish and you will take three or four more sips before your are sure. The anise on this is spectacular. I was expecting chocolate and when I realized the anise lightly permeating the drink I was delighted. This beer is like a gentle breath. The bready quality of the malt increases as it warms and this is one fabulous dubbel.

Beautiful dark, chestnut color. Thick foamy head that takes time to settle.

I was lucky enough to have this on tap at Meadhall in Cambridge, MA. I wasn't aware that it was made by Duvel but after learning that, it was no surprise. Top quality Dubbel. Malty, strong and delicious.

Poured from 750ml bottle into Chimay goblet.

A - Copper-ruby brown with an off white, lacey thin head.

S - Light sweet sugary smell with a touch of buttery yeast.

T - Vague toffee, brown bread with butter, touch of hops in the finish.

M - Thin to medium body with a fine, stinging carbonation.

A comforting Belgian beer. Not overpowering or weak, a good measure of the Belgian styles.

Maredsous 8. Served in its own glassware.

Dark reddish chestnut color with a coat of lace film from a depleted head of light tan. Looks regal.

Mild notes of grape and plum with light phenols pushing fruity medicinals to the nose. Has a near caramel malt backbone with enough Belgian yeast pizzazz to confound you.

Malty raisin, plum, and fresh fig hovers over surfacing alcohol and rosewater. Characteristically earthy with barley grain and steeped nuttiness among other yeasty esters. Has mild sweetness and a slight tobacco note that accents the husky malts. Phenols are bigger now and there is a plastic-y note that I could pass on.

Lighter in body than one would expect, but still retains a velvety smoothness. The light, but perky, carbonation aids this.

A well-to-do dubbel, for style. Well-balanced and supple. Booziness is kept at-bay, for the most part.

A- A dark brown colored beer with some copper flashes.Its foam is not very compact and doesn´t last long.

S- Chocolate and red fruits aroma,some raisings are also present, very complex.

T- Roasted malts ,coffe and vanilla , some yeasty and toffy hints, its alcohol is easily perceived but it is not unpleasant or overpowering the others flavor hues.Bitterness comes along the way fading as the sip ends.It has a dark chocolate finish.

M- Big bodied with a silky mouthfeel.

O- Some kind of licquor beer, very well suited for winter time.

11.2 oz bottle into porter glass. Caramel color with 1" head. Nice color for a brown ale. Ok smell, surprisingly lemony at first. Also some notes of cedar. Much better with a sharp cheese than a mild one. Great with a Manchego. Not as creamy as I would expect.

Dark with a medium head. Nondescript smell. Strong, peat taste. Creamy finish in the mouth, starting out with strong malt flavor but ending up with with a nice bitter edge. Definitely (as you would expect) not a light, refreshing summer beer, but very good on a cold night. Great with Manchego! Not bad.

A: Cola brown with an almost yellow head.

S: Smacks of prunes/dates/dried figs and butter of all things. My friend can smell canola spread.

T: Bitterness and cinnamony Coca Cola are the first discernable flavours. As it warms I get the classic Belgian prunes and dried figs but none of the laquer/nail varnish like in bigger Belgian ales. Almost at room temperature and rhubarb is really punching through. Bread pudding also springs to mind. In fact it's doughy. The fruitiness is very residual, leaving a lovely long aftertaste. Red wine because quite perceptible then.

M: Frothy and light. Lets it down.

O: Initially somewhat unrefined but opened up as it warmed. It was probably best at just below room temperature. Never been bowled over by the dubbel style and this was no exception. Great flavour but too light and frothy for my liking.

Pours an opaque mud brown that looks quite red/amber in the light. Has an excellent two-fingers of creamy beige head that slowly quiets down and leaves a perfect 1/4-inch gloppy, spotty, clingy cap of suds. Decent retention and beautiful lacing.

Fresh and clean. Sweet and warm on the whole. Really pronounced smell of dark fruits and doughy yeast. Tad of spiciness but not too intense.

Light vaguely sweet and refreshing. Under-ripe cherries and wet grass hit you up front before a nutty, creamy yeast taste that finishes it off (with the tiniest bump of hop bitterness).

Crisp and really good pronounced carbonation. Medium body and creamy on the whole. Lots of different blasts of fruit, earth and spices mixed with the slightest detectable warm, sloppy booziness.

Excellent beer. Wow. It has all the things that make a really strong beer good, but is super drinkable and (with an ABV of 8%) is relatively sessionable. Gorgeous. The head is neither too intense nor non-existent. The beer packs a lot of flavor but it is all so well-balanced that you hardly notice how much is going on. Really well-constructed beer. Would definitely drink again.

Also, take into consideration the temperature. I really enjoyed it the more it warmed up. Take it out of the fridge a decent while before drinking!

From the caged, corked 650 ml. bottle stamped: MBR00901C1-01/07/13-01352. Sampled on June 9. 2013 so it is a few months old.

It pours a perfect looking ruby red-brown with a soft, delicate beige head that lingers and laces gently along the side of the Abbey goblet.

The aroma is vibrant with Belgian toasted malts, Belgian candied sugar, yeast, dark dried fruit, coriander, and clove. Absolutely luscious to smell.

The body is quite creamy and bold with a slight astringency. The body seems to be the weakest aspect of this fine beer.

The taste roars back and gains back my confidence in this beer with its dark fruit, dark malts, and sweet character. But there is this kind of moderate bitterness that sneaks up on the backside resulting in a fine balance. By far one of the top Dubbels I have ever had.

A Hazy ruby. Thin tan head. Lacing follows down.

S Thick malts, this hits hard. Sugar. Chocolate. Carmel.

T Very malty. Initial sweetness gives way to a spicy flavor. Red pepper. Cloves. Slight boozy aftertaste.

M Thick and chewy.

O Good beer. Defiantly European. By which I mean they are not trying to knock your head off with a bitter kick. That being said, still too sweet for my taste.

33 mL bottle, bottle conditioned. Freshness date good through 2015. Poured a large crowning 2-3 fingers of creamy off-white head showed really strong retention and lacing. Colour is a dark ruby brown, some light getting through.

S- red fruits, cherry, a whiff of tobacco, sweet caramel, quite a bit of maltiness coming through. Warming with some pepper and hearty yeast coming through. Some tropical fruit thrown in there as well. Nice to see it open up with some lighter fruity spice notes. Could lose yourself in here.

T- spicy-sweet off the start, dry raisin fruitiness, dry rum alc-spice toward end. Woody pepper spice, slight lemon. Some cherry and cranberry fruitiness, dry oakiness. Slight spiciness and tart lemons and cloves, and some shallow roasty notes. Finish is sticky caramel malt, dry. Warms really nicely and shows quite a solid complexity.

M- really fully malty feel, highly carbonated, a bit high imo, and I couldn't shake a feeling of a slightly watery feel on the back, with a roasty malt feel upfront. It gave a bit of a refreshing prickle and then a warming and slightly cloying end.

This beer looks good, smells pretty good, the mouthfeel let me down a bit. To be sure, it is a really good beer, but I maybe expected touch more complexity coming through and a more satisfying mouthfeel. It has a lot of flavour, but I would not characterize it as 'rich' per say. A good double, and refreshing but there are better examples.

Red brown in color with a strong off brown and foamy head.

The aroma is mostly of brown malts, some phenols, fairly clean in the aroma, some nice notes of pepper, spice, cinnamon, and vanilla.

Strong biscuit like malt flavors, very malty, toffee, a little bit of ripe fruit, spicy and clove like phenols.

Medium/full body, high in carbonation.

A great example of what brown malts can do in a beer without needing to be roasted or dark. I like the brown malts paired with the phenols.

Brown color, rubyedges. Light brwon colored foa, quite good and compact.
In the smell candy fruit, cherry in alcohol, candy sugar, but without crossing the border to the exaggerated sweetness.
In the mouth malt, candy sugar, red fruitiness, and a bit of spiciness in the end. Overall, the belgian yeast.
Pleasant beer, very belgian, round and balanced.
