A: The body is a dark shade of orange and very opaque. The head is rocky and white, leaving some spotted lacing. It's much darker than most other tripels. Head retention is also noticeably low after pouring.

S: It smells like applesauce. There is some floral esters in the background as well. It smells pretty good, especially if you like applesauce.

T: Lots of alcohol flavor with a hint of wood on the sides. It's not that great tasting. There isn't much actual flavor to the beer aside the pure alcohol flavor that has taken over. There's a hint of apple-like flavor but it's nowhere near what I got from the smell.

M: The mouthfeel is very light and effervescent. It's very well carbonated. Drinkability is very low. While the beer feels very light in the mouth, it is an alcohol bomb.

O: Overall I was not a fan of this tripel. I felt that it didn't have much flavor to back up the huge alcohol presence. There wasn't any particular part of the beer that I found impressive. The fortunate side-effect of drinking this beer, is that it's 10% ABV. If you're looking to get smashed then this is your beer.

Champagne style bottle poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

Pours reddish amber, heavy white foam. Laces every where and persists. Fruit nose, some apple/cinnamon too. Taste has a lot of yeast and dark fruit. A twisted bitter no greets you at the finish. Boozy. Hearty. Swirls of spices. Better as is builds. Good Belgian.

The beer's color is a that of a luminescent, rich cider. The coarse, ecru head is, alas, fleeting, and not a factor. The smell is very sweet: cotton candy? overripe grapes? But don't get me wrong--it's an inviting aroma, borne out by a toffee or caramel flavor that culminates in an aftertaste of currants. The mouthfeel, while not memorable, might be slightly better than my rating implies. Overall, a nice experience from a beer that's none too subtle. Recommended.

Rich, dark, slightly hazy amber color. Warm, slightly spicy note on the nose. Very rich, brandy-like flavor. Nice, lacy trail left on the glass after every sip, don't sip too fast or you'll feel that slightly brandy-like warmth in your chest. There is a slight bite on the tip of the tongue after each sip but it is smoothed out across the tongue turning into a sweet, smooth, slightly spicy note which lingers on the back of the tongue. Outstanding brew, I originally had it on tap and have been wanting to have it again, but the Yard House couldn't keep it in stock so I was pretty stoked when I found it at BevMo tonight - I am very happy I tried it from the bottle - very good.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass at a beer class at local wine superstore.

Clear golden amber with a nice head. Has a "classic" beer aroma - slight citrus scent

Tastes of citrus, apricot, & vanilla with a nice fizzy fuzzy mouthfeel. Very nice even finish

Would definitely want to have this again.

Best before 3/2015.

Appearance: Bright copper/honey with decent clarity and a ton of effervescence. Two finger off-white head. Leaving nice lacing.

Aroma: Deep liqueur-like pear and plum. Almost a caramel element as well. The 10% ABV is not well hidden here.

Taste: Starts with a light belgian candi sugar sweetness that combines with semi-gritty pear and a touch of yeast esters. The level of spice is good, apparent on the palate but not bruising. Somewhat moderate level of hop bitterness but no real hop flavor, typical for the style from other Tripels I've had and well done in this one. Really airy finish that leaves you with a bit of syrupy malt and a fruit liqueur flavor. Nice bit of heat in the back of the throat which is unusual since most Tripels hide the alcohol incredibly well. However, it's a nice change of pace from the others and makes for a more intense drinking experience.

Mouthfeel: Based on the aroma I was expected a hefty beer. To my surprise Maredsous Tripel is quite light for such a big beer, just above medium. The steady stream of carbonation makes it surprisingly smooth and quite drinkable.

Final Thoughts: Tripels used to be one of my least favorite styles, but the more I drink them the higher they rank in my opinion. It's amazing how a big 10% ABV brew can feel so light and yet pack so much flavor. Would I drink it again? Yes.

Served from a 33 cl bottle bought in France.

A - Color is a deep gold or bright orange. It is clear but not crystal clear. The beige head is very active, dense and thick, and remains that way.

S - Some great aromas. Light floral hops, lemon zest, warm biscuity malt. There are some spicy esthers from the yeast. The alcohol is detectable but not harsh. Overall impression is clean, restrained and crisp, rather than over the top in any one area.

T - Moderate hops bitterness is the first thing to register, but warm, bready malt quickly comes in to balance. The hops taste is indistinct, but there is a slight astringency that is almost tea-like. No real yeast or alcohol notes. Very clean, but not very complex or deep in flavors.

M - Light body seems thin for the overall beer. Alcohol is just barely felt. Hops are moderate bitterness. Carbonation is low and does not add much mouthfeel.

O - This is an extremely clean, well-made beer, but for me it lacks anything to make it truly distinctive as a tripel. A little more body and some interesting yeast notes would push it over the top for me.

A: Nice thick head on initial pour into a tulip glass which resolved to nice thin layer and lacing. Nice amber colour with good effervescence without being excessive

S: Bouquet of honey and caramel, fruit esters (a little banana, raisin, apple), hint of alcohol

T: Malty forward taste followed by a little fruit/honey then a hint of hops and a fairly dry clean finish.

M: Fair amount of carbonation, a tad syrup in texture

Quite good overall, at <$4 a bottle its a good tripel though a bit unconventional in its profile. Good with a burger, tacos, a great beer for a picnic.

Smell: chocolate, caramel, and figs

Taste: melon, red apples, lemongrass, tangerines, smoked nuts, and a smooth juicy dryness

This beer is a very under-rated triple that deserves some credence. For some, however, this beer may be very sweet with an odd mix of characteristics; this isn't a typical tripel.
To pair, I would recommend a good quality hamburger or, some skewered prawns or jambalaya; you can do a lot with this beer: get creative

Maredsous 10 is a fairly malt-forward tripel that focuses less on yeast and its metabolites than in other versions of the style. Fairly heavy, at times honey-like and syrupy, though never becoming cloying, Maredsous 10 manages to achieve a fairy unique vision of what it means to be a tripel. Despite this, I did not find the beer as compelling as other versions of the style, the maltiness being a bit two-dimensional, as opposed to other tripels with much more pronounced complexity. At $9 per bottle, it's priced well for a Belgian import, but still probably not a tripel I'd revisit again.

Pours, like most tripels, a very tall head (>4cm) of fairly dense foam, though this version has a beige color to it. Retention is about average, lasting a few minutes in a slow decline to a perpetual 0.5cm-tall cap of foam atop the body of the beer. Extensive lacing along the sides of the glass, a heavy layer of foam affixed across the entirety of the glass walls. Body is a golden orange color, somewhat hazy (30-40% opaque), light bringing out brighter orange-yellow hues. Carbonation is visible, though not particularly abundant or active.

Aroma is of pale and slight caramel malt, light candi sugar, Belgian yeast esters (dried apple, banana), slightly spicy phenols, and faint yeast.

Maredsous 10 displays a fairly heavy sweetness for a tripel, with yeast byproducts being of secondary focus. Front of palate is heavily sweet for a tripel, of honey, substantial pale, and light caramel malt with noticeable dried apple and pear esters. Mid-palate of pale and slightly caramelized malt, honey, dried fruit esters of apple and banana, modest clove-like phenols, faintly bitter hops, and very minor ethanol. Back of palate finds spicy phenols with ethanol also enhancing this component, continued, substantial sweetness from both malts and fruit-like esters. Aftertaste is of continued pale malt sweetness, honey, phenols, and a touch of ethanol.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, resulting in a smooth, gently foamy mouthfeel that is soft and generally pleasant. Very faint ethanol can be felt in the nostrils and on the back of the throat, otherwise this 10% ABV beer is highly deceptive. Closes fairly dry, with substantial stickiness remaining on the palate.

This is my first beer review on this site! Though I have been "researching" for quite a while!!
Quite a nice, deep copper amber color, very large bubbles when initially poured into a Chimay goblet but as it sits for a couple minutes, they become smaller. I poured the beer from a bottle labeled best before 5/2015. The head was about 1-2 fingers or so and then dissipated fairly quickly and left some lacing on the glass. The smell is quite good, clean and malty. The mouthfeel is very good - creamy, lighter than expected with the 10% alcohol. Very drinkable though it is a heavy, high alcohol beer that you won't/can't have many. I like it VERY much!

I am drinking while watching DRINKING MADE EASY - GREAT SHOW! (also THREE SHEETS is also awesome!) - You can find some episodes on YouTube but I bought all of the DVDs

A: Bronze coloured with a beige head.
S: Very strong malty tones. You can almost feel its bitterness by the smell.
T: It's a bitter and very strong beer. You cannot miss the 10% ABV that it has, it's just that strong. But in someway it's balanced by its fruited finish.
M: It has low carbonization so it just feels smooth in your mouth.
O: It's pretty much awesome, yet too heavy for drinking without something eaten in your belly.

Hazy pale dark wheat beer like color. Strong head but not sticky.

Aroma is dominated by alcohol with notes of phenols, clove, sugar, and pineapple.

Beer has a lot going on, phenols, pineapple, candi sugar, a little sweet but finish is with some nice spicy hops.

Sticky mouthfeel, medium in body.

Pleasant to sip on, alcohol is a bit much and the forefront but the phenols in this beer are great.

Pours a deep copper color with brilliant clarity. A tall head sits on top. It's fluffy dense and lingers on and on. And why shouldn't it this beer is well attenuated. Plenty of fine lacing coats the glass. Looks like a quiality brew here.
First aroma has a mildy sour and winey notes. Fruit notes from yeast and candied sugar are present too.
Taste is dry and spicy. And with this brew being at 10% ABV it too is a major player. It gives the beer a warming bitterness. As the beer warms hints of dark fruits and candied sugars are released giving it an almost Dubbel taste that compliments the dry bitterness perfectly.
This ia quite a good beer and as far as Tripels, gotta be top ten.

Aged maredsous... best by date is 1/2013, so this is a little late to crack. I am not sure how long I've aged it for - perhaps two years in my cellar.

A - cloudy, dark bronze, opaque.
S - wonderful. pruny, dark fruit. dinstinctly belgian. hints of malt.
T - pruny, but not overwhelming. the dark fruit i would expect have mellowed out in the bottom and play nicely with the malt. I have a feeling the peppery and personality aspects of a fresh bottle have also mellowed. The finish is smooth and continues to integrate the fruit with malt extremely well. Hint of aspiriny chalkiness in the overall taste profile - not offensive.
M - carbonation is perfect.

Overall - muy deliciosio. I almost wish I had a fresh bottle to do a side by side tasting with. my presumption is the fresh bottle would be snappier, less integrated and have a teenager's personality compared with this, the mellowed 30-something that appreciates time and experience.

Pours a pretty standard golden color, head disappears quite quickly, though leaving a ring at the top of the glass.

Tastes bright, but not overly so. Pretty sparkly on the tongue, and just a bit of aftertaste that lingers. I'm really bad at putting "notes" to tastes, but this seems pretty floral to me. Super, super drinkable for a Belgian, and really quite enjoyable.

The perfect combination of light enough but still quite flavorful. Great for hot weather.

Appearance: Pours murky orange amber with lots of foam that vanished quickly.

Smell: Malty sweet with alcohol sent.

Taste: Strong malty flavours with an alcohol after taste. Probably because of the high alcohol content.

Mouthfeel: Very strong beer. High body. Not too highly carbonated.

Overall: A very good beer to have along with a good meal.

330ml bottle into a goblet.

Pours a clear deep gold with a fluffy half finger white head. Great head retention with just a little bit of lacing.

Aroma that is undoubtedly Belgian with clove and banana a little bit of caramel and spicyness sneaks in there as well.

The taste is, unfortunately, not the cleanest that I have experienced. Some coriander and clove but a little too much sweetness and juiciness. Bitterness is light and the dryness is trying to come through but just doesn't quite make it. Alcohol is well-hidden, though, and drinkability is good.

Overall, an ok tripel but far from the best out there. I wish the mouthfeel was much dryer. Worth picking up, though.

Poured this Tripel into a chimay tulip and a thick white head appears with excellent retention and average lacing. Golden amber appearance that is moderately hazy. Nose of bread, pear, and Belgian yeast. Taste follows this profile with Belgian yeast/funk and expected alcohol with slightly thinner than expected mouthfeel. Overall a better than average tripel that is deceptively drinkable and might sneak up on you!

12 fl oz bottle served in a chalice.
poured a honey/golden hazy liquid, 3 fingers dense white head, nice persistence and lacing. faint nose composed of malts, belgian yeast, bread, pears, and alcohol. palate of initial malt sweetness mainly pear, hints of natural honey, evolves into an alcoholic bitterness. spices, bread and bitters in the aftertaste. light to medium body, nice carbonation. alcohol is not well masked imo, but, well its 10% afterall...
overall a not fruity/sweet brew as i would expect, the bitter alcoholic finish isnt that appealing to me, i liked the honey touch though, magnificent appeareance. definitely in the belgian style, but next time i would dare to try a new tripel or have another one i like better, worth a try but might not have it again.

Poured from 11.2 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip glass. Bottle says best by March 2014.

Appearance: Pours a deep hazy copper amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of white head that slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A yeasty, spicy, and fruity aroma. Belgian yeast with good hints of funk, cloves, cinnamon, and pepper spicing. Big hints of Belgian candied sugar along with fruit esters of banana, pear, apple, and citrus orange, lemon, and apricot. Strong malt scent with hints of caramel, biscuit, and toffee. Fairly grassy and floral with some hops in the background. Solid Belgian aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints, a yeasty, spicy, and fruity taste with a solid caramel malt presence. Belgian yeast with a mix of clove, pepper, and cinnamon spices. Some funk and a good dose of Belgian candied sugars. Solid taste of fruits with notes of pear, banana, apple, and citrus lemon, orange, and apricot. Solid caramel malt taste with some biscuit and toffee. Floral and grassy hops add some earthy dryness. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Creamy, spicy, and fairly drying. Alcohol heat is hidden pretty well.

Overall: A pretty good Belgian ale. More caramel malt than usual for the style, but it works well. Good use of yeast and spices.

330ml stubby brown bottle with a pry-off crown poured in a glass goblet. Best before on the back states 05 2014. Out of a gift pack with a branded ceramic goblet, blonde, brown and triple. Got two of these packs for my birthday last month. Thanks to Jen & Mike and Douglas for the brews!

Orangey-reddish-copper in colour and hazy. Light beige head is 3/8 inch on the pour, big and frothy. Recedes to a thin cap with big gobs of lace down the sides.

Aroma is sweet and fruity with a strong presence of alcohol. Apricots, caramel malt, fuzzy peach candies and brandy.

Apricot and malt sweetness at the start then a big punch of alcohol. Any subtleties that the beer would have are lost in the alcohol, so it winds up being pretty straight forward and uncomplicated.

Mouthfeel is pretty smooth with little pin prick carbonation off the start, but when the booze hits in the middle and through the finish it's all esters and harsh.

This is definitely a sipper. I prefered the blonde and brown as the alcohol isn't as overpowering in those. An alright triple, but not one I'd run out of my way to get again.

From an 11.2 oz bottle (best before March 2015) into a tulip.

A-A normal pour resulted in nearly three fingers of rocky, shiny, white foam that was very slow to fade. The beer was amber/orange in color and mostly clear (I left the yeast in the bottle). The head left big, lacy chunks on the glass.

S-My initial impression had me thinking this was going to be a Belgian pale ale with strong whiffs of peppery, herbal alcohol, lemon grass, some clove, and only a touch of banana. A little bit of alcohol heat was definitely there, too.

T-The taste followed the smell closely, i.e., lemongrass, white pepper, orange zest, and some alcohol. The yeast was funky and dry. Not much in the way of sugar and definitely not as banana/clove dominant as some tripels, but more herbal.

M-The carbonation is thick and prickly, which gives the beer a lighter to medium feel.

O-I did not have great recollections about Maredsous when I sat down to drink this brew, but was pleasantly surprised. Although this beer may be a touch herbal or grassy for the style, and although the alcohol is definitely noticeable and a touch harsh compared with the best tripels, I found it pleasing and quite drinkable for 10% ABV. Lastly, this was a good looking beer.

Appearance: A excellent finger and a half of head that produced ample lacing and retained very well at half a finger. The body itself if a unique bronze the turns ruby and golden depending on how the light strikes it. The carbonation is high, so high that it seems to cling to the sides of the glass with a bit of excessive fervour.

Smell: Very yeasty as a white white/pear cider scent dominates the nose. Subtle spicing in the background has me catching cloves, cinnamon and a hint of bubblegum. Didn't need a lot of warming to come out, but it certainly adds more complexity.

Taste: Hmm...it drinks more like a wine then it does a beer as the ample mild bread malt is quickly subsumed by the pear wine taste which lightly dusts itself off with mild floral hops and spice that don't quite cleanse away the boozier wine taste.

Mouthfeel: That pear wine aftertaste lingers, just like a wine would and despite it seemingly having ample carbonation, it seems to come across as fluffy and doesn't really lend itself to the beer. Excellent transitioning though.

Drinkability: It's very much like wine, and like wine, it really needs a meal to go with it. Sadly I didn't have a meal, and while the moderate carbonation make is on the lighter end of medium bodied, it doesn't quite conceal the alcohol content as well as I would like.

Final Thoughts: Well I called it, the tripel was the one of my three Maredsous bottles that ended up disappointing. It's still good, and maybe it didn't age quite right in my fridge, but I much preferred the Blonde and Dubbel.
