Very well balanced. A great beer to have on hand. The last two of four overflowed when I opened them.

The citra really breathed some fresh air into the belgian ipa here. The belgian yeasts with the citra combined for a crisp and dry feel, with lemongrass, pine, and pineapple flavors. The issues I ran into was the hops seem to overpower the base beer, causing the finish to be like a hop resin distilled. Little more malt should fix that right up!

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very slightly hazy, medium golden amber with a half finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of candi, lightly caramel malt, Belgian yeast, grassy hops, lemon and light stone fruit. Flavor is mildly caramel malt, citrus hops, lemon and grapefruit with estery citrus in the finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A very lemony IPA, almost approaching one of the "lemonade" style ones. I'm wondering if this might be an older bottle, bottle manufacturing date is 2017 and the label date is 7-2018, which I think is a best by date for this brewery. That could explain the hops taking on a one note character. Still an interesting and refreshing citrus IPA, although the malt and yeast character are subsumed by the lemony hops. High ABV is well covered. This one was a little odd at first, but grew on me quite quickly. I would definitely try this again with some more solid idea about freshness.

11.2 oz bottle, best before 02 2019. Date stamp L41001 0100. Served in a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Hard pour gave a bright clear gold colored beer, with a nicely thick rocky white head. Most of the lacing slide back down the glass and didn't stick too much, some some fine persistent lacing was noted here and there.

Smell: Orange, lemon, citrus rind, tropical fruit.

Taste: Citrus hoppy up front, very strong - which mostly masks the underlying malt that is a bit cracker like. Strongly bitter finish that has aspects of pineapple, some other tropical fruit, maybe a hint of white grape, and citrus rind. There is a bit of an unusual aftertaste with all of this - not bad, just unusual. Much of the Belgian fruity esters from the yeast are muted, but they may be clashing with the hops which results in the unusual aftertaste I'm detecting.

Mouthfeel: Strongly carbonated that scrubs the palate clean. A bit oily on top of a good thickness. Dry finish.

Overall / Drinkability: I think I prefer the normal Duvel over this one. I think Citra and Belgian yeasts clash, and while I drank all of this...I'm not sure how I feel about it. Certainly hits the style of a Belgian IPA correctly...and yet is a bit odd with the aftertaste. Maybe this is just too old a bottle given that this was from 2017 and it's now roughly 5 months from best before. Went well with food (broccoli and wild rice fritters).

330ml bottle from Morrison's supermarket (£2.50):
This one was an unusual one in that it definitely wasn't up the standards of the original Duvel & probably didn't quite hit the heights of their 2014 Tripel Hop (Citra) either but it was still a pleasant enough & drinkable beer that went down easily enough despite the strength. It opened with some nice zesty citrus flavours & a couple of lighter malts alongside apple, pear and some grapes but nothing really stuck out & I couldn't help but think this was a beer that could have & should have been better than it was in the end.

11.2oz bottle. Poured out a slightly cloudy, golden orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of citrus, pine and sweet caramel. Sweet citrus, grapefruit and caramel with a mild piney bitterness.

I'm giving this a 1 for their annoying marketing tactic of putting "voted best triple hop ever" - da fuq does that even mean? I love Duvel and this isn't even as good as their regular. I can't stand these marketing techniques that sound so superior and great but mean nothing. Voted by who? Best beer... Ever? These are annoying marketing tactics and I'm really disappointed in Duvel for using them - tsk tsk

Hazy straw with little haze and carbonation, topped with 6 fingers of classic Duvel glassy white head.

Smells of citra, citrus and pine, pineapple, and the typical duvel qualities like yellow glass candy and phenols and hay.

The taste follows the nose. Wonderful.

Medium, light and crisp body, moderate carbonation and a dry, tannic finish.

Got at Rimping tonight, Drinking in Chiang Mai, Jan 17th, 2018. Excellent brew.
