Extremely shocked to find this had not been reviewed yet when I heard this had been on tap at Peppercorns for roughly 3 weeks now. This is the bronze medal winning beer from the GABF aged in a Sam Adams Utopiah barrel for 6 weeks. What was initially a 6.8% increased by a few thanks to that lovely aging.
A - A midnight black pour with a nice fluffy one finger super light tan head that fades to leave a clumpy cloud atop the porter along with a light tan halo. Not much in the way of side lacing but those swirls of foam hung around for the durations.
S - Big chocolate notes along with roasted malts. Not picking up much in the line of smokeyness, which I'm okay with. In exchange, there is an unplaceable dark fruit aroma along with some nice oaky barrel notes. Deep in the body there is a just slightly bitter aroma.
T - Rich chocolate and coasty malts. This stuff came out so chocolatey its almost like a RIS. The super light bitter hop aroma that came through in the nose is entirely masked in the mouth. Thats alright though as its replaced by a wonderful earthy oaky flavour from the barrel along with some very heavy dark fruit notes. Right at the very end I get the faintest of hop bitterness but for the most part, this is an all chocolate, all flavour aged porter.
M - Low carbonation but not watery/thin or syrupy. Feels like a silken curtain washing over my tongue with each sip.
D - The flavour, the mouthfeel, the luscious aroma, aging has really done wonders for this already delicious porter. I think I like this better than their aged stout, maybe even the aged amber. The fourth beer of theirs to age this still, in my opinion, doesnt match the magic that was the barrel aged IPA but pro-am + Utopiah barrel = delicious. Really worth trying.

Poured a 1" mocha colored head. Clear but dark brown/black like coffee. Smells of coffee, dark chocolate, and deep roasted malts. Taste has both coffee and chocolate. There's a pleasant but brief acidic zing. The beer's finish seem too quick but then the chocolate flavor persisted on and on in the mouth for minutes. Really an easy drinking but flavor packed porter.
