This is the beer brewed with Brian Davis the winner of the metro-west home brew competition. A 300 gallon batch was brewed with two different types of dehusked roasted barley and american grown Liberty hops. Poured into a standard pint glass.

A - Poured a deep dark brown much like a roasty chestnut not quite black. There is a nice inviting one finger mocha head that fades to leave a nice halo and thick cloud/side lacing.

S - starts off with a very nice slightly sweet roasted malt that fades to a subtle chocolate and coffee bitterness. Not getting any hops on the nose.

T - Taste is very roasty. Lots of roasted malts almost burnt tasting. There is some sweetness but mostly very roasty malts. That almost astringent quality leads to a very dark chocolate (think 85%) and slight coffee flavour. There is a bitterness at the end but it strikes me more of a bitter roast than hops.

M - Nice and sharp and carbonated. Somewhat light but the roast bitterness is a bit hard to get past for me.

O - Overall I felt this was a bit too roasty for my liking. It really dominated and overpowered the nose and pallet. If that got toned back a bit I could swig this back easily.

Tap at peppercorns
Nice creamy 1/2 finger head fades at a med pace touch of lacing over almost black beer hints of brown maroon light.

Nose has nice malts, dark crystal malts, hint of black patent, a light coffee like roast, light crisp lager aromas.

Taste malty again, dark malts with a light roast and hint black patent, juicy reddish malts maybe crystal. Grassy slight spicy hops kick in, not huge but enough to let you know and a light bite of bitterness. just a hint of crisp lager which lets the malts and hops shine through. Touch of a roasted dark choc. It finishes dry but slightly sticky, fairly crisp but not a big dry crisp lager finish I was expecting, a bit more dark roasty malts and mild spicy grassy hops lingering.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, decent carb, fairly rich.

Overall pretty nice, drinkable, fairly crisp, nice dark malts combine with light bitter hops.

This is my first review here and I'm doing it from memory. Had this beer on tap 2 days ago. I also was able to try the original beer on the day of the contest 3 months ago. From what I remember, this was very accurate to the orignal.

A- Very dark with a good head and lacing

S- I got some pretty well balanced roasty, chocolate and coffee notes.

T- Roastiness continues with some chocolate and subtle coffee. Very clean tasting considering. No astringency.

M- Very smooth, clean and drinkable.

O- Overall this was a really good beer. I'm not too familiar with the style but I do know I would order it again.
