12 oz. bottle dated 01/12/17

Pours hazy amber orange with a dense creamy white foam head. Smells like candied grapefruit, papaya, orange citrus, melon, berry, buddha's hand, some caramel malts, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like candied grapefruit peel, papaya, orange citrus, melon, berry, buddha's hand, some caramel malts, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy and slick with moderate carbonation. Overall a really nice DIPA with grapefruit peel and buddha's hand.

A- Pours from the 12oz bottle to a goblet with a slightly hazy deep golden-orange body and a white cap. The head is thick and frothy making it to about an inch high before slowly falling to a thin island in the middle of the beer and a wide belt at the edges. Lacing forms in a large, spotty pattern.

S- Heavy on the tropical fruits with mango, peach, guava and papaya character joined by citrus hops and a touch of sweetness. Other things that come to mind are tangerine, orange, fresh grapefruit juice and zest as well as a hint of cereal and pine.

T- Opens up with a similar juicy tropical profile as the aroma but quickly becomes fairly bitter with sharp grapefruit oil and pine resin coating the palate; bitterness keeps its grip for the foreseeable future. Sweet melon, dank herbs, mango, peach, papaya, guava, orange, tangerine, grapefruit juice and floral hops balance with a light sweetness, a touch of alcohol, bread and pale barley.

MF- Full bodied for the style with a hefty and chewy creamy texture. The carbonation is at a high level but falls very smoothly onto the palate thanks to the consistency of the brew. Ends with a sharp bitterness akin to biting into a citrus peel.

Juicy tropical fruits are joined by a massive dose of just about all hop flavors with a focus on the citrus, fruity side of things as well as some pine. Tastes a bit alcoholic and that compounds onto the sharp bitterness but overall a really pleasant high ABV IPA.

New England DIPA. 9.6% ABV.

Translucent amber. Grapefruit, lemon peel, and guava on the nose. You really get the grapefruit and buddha's hand on the palate, but they are so clean and subtle you'd think they were from the hops and not an infusion. The citrus flavors are quite nice but unfortunately slightly marred but a sweet maltiness that seems out of place. I'd like this more as a straightforward, crisp hop-focused beer without the malt backbone. Still, a very good DIPA.

Picked up a four-pack at Craft Beer Cellar Westford after work. Amusingly, most people were looking for Sip of Sunshine but since I've already had it (and they were out of it within minutes of announcing they got some in; groan) but I was looking specifically to snatch this one up since I've heard a lot about it since the first time it was brewed. Therefore, I have high expectations for this double IPA!

Pours a deep orange/amber color with a thin yet retentive head of blurry white foam with cloudy spots on top. Lace seems very consistent and the beer presents with nice legs and a fairly hazy body.

Nose is pure citrus oil with tons of grapefruit, tangerine, orange and lemon peel. I guess the heady smell sort of like a cross between passionfruit-like sweetness and white grapefruit or pomelo must be the Buddha's Hand? Light pine resin and dank hoppiness backing up the fruit addition. The hop bill on this is, in general, surprisingly old school (though Calypso is certainly an unusual addition to a citrusy DIPA), so it's no surprise I mostly get pine and citrus and no real tropical fruit notes here.

Flavor is bitter and pith-forward upfront with huge grapefruit peel and pith combined with tangerine and orange peel notes. Middle of the palate is overtaken by a wash of caramel-like sweetness and a very "old school" west coast IPA-like backbone of malt and pine/citrus. The finish is very bitter and has a nice lingering note of citrus peel, and I do believe I get some of the Buddha's hand zest in there as well with some bright lemon and even floral notes coming out here and there.

Feel is pretty solid, with a nice coating bitterness, low-moderate carbonation and heavy-ish body that reflects the 9.5% ABV fairly well. Semi-chewy malt and big citrus/pine presence really highlight the weight of this beer, which it does kind of throw around. Not sure it needs to be almost 9.5%, and that's one of my only real sticking points with it. This feels like it'd be a better beer at only 8% and with some more modern hops to really bring it into the present. The Buddha's hand is a nice idea, but it's not as distinct as the brewery wants it to be. Grapefruit, though more generic, is a much more prominent and noticeable addition. Very good stuff, but has some minor improvements that could be made. Glad I picked up a four-pack, regardless. I will enjoy drinking the rest of them!

A sweet citrus aroma right off.
Pours a nice golden amber.
Sweet on the front end, nice lasting bitterness to balance it out.
Very Drinkable for a high ABV beer.
Limited Release, Very Good Double IPA.

The smell of citrus fruit and pulp is pleasant and distinct. The Buddha's hand fruit is definitely unique and is such an odd looking fruit. I've never seen one in person before today when I checked out one that was on the bar while waiting for my growler to be filled. This beer is great tasting and very dangerous as the high ABV is nicely hidden; the malt balances the hops well leading to a surprisingly well balanced IIPA. This is a juicy, sweet beer and has a sticky mouth feel that may be off-putting for some people. Overall, this is one fine beer and one that I'll seek out again. The problem is that this area has a lot of competition in the juicy IIPA category and I had to drive past one of if not the best brewers of east coast IIPA's to get this fresh (TH). First world problems though!

An exceptional IIPA. The buddha's hand fruit gives this beer a unique citrus aroma and flavor. Dark orange in color and very hoppy. One of my favorites.

Hard beer to find, pumped to have the Buddha. Nice beer alittle to piney sweet for me, but nice citron blast to finish not at all bitter.
