Brewed by:
Vintage Brewing Company
Wisconsin, United States

Style: Roggenbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewed with rye, European specialty malts and Czech Saaz hops, Tippy Toboggan is an old-world ‘Roggen Bier’, a distant cousin to our Weiss bier. With a fresh fruity aroma and a complex nutty/spicy malt character,
it’s chock full of flavor yet relatively light and easy drinking.

64 oz growler poured into a pilsner glass.
6.7% ABV

A - Rushing from the growler with the appearance of dirty pond water, this beer is a totally cloudy dirt brown color that produces a tall but fleeting ivory head that leaves dots of soapy lace sticking to the glass.

S - The aroma is very reminiscent of their Weiss-Blau with it's big and authentic Bavarian yeast aroma lush with ripe bananas and spicy clove but Tippy Toboggan has a clear twist; rye. Earthy and rustic, malted rye imparts a wonderful and complimentary spice nose to this dunkel beer that takes it to another level, offsetting the smooth wheat, which fills the background.

T - Bold complexity rushes over the tongue, changing direction throughout the whole beer and it all starts with a classic Bavarian yeast profile, just like the aroma. Chocolate drizzled banana and spicy clove are washed over by spicy rye and delicious notes of molasses, caramel, and plum, finishing with super smooth wheat.

M - Highly carbonated but with the feel of a smooth nitro beer, Tippy Toboggan has a miraculous blend of soft, smooth wheat to balance out the rye's harshness on the tongue for an amazing finish that quickly beckons you for another sip.

O - Fantastic from the first whiff to the last drop, Vintage's Tippy Toboggan blends the summery aromatics and flavors of a classic hefeweizen with raw earthiness from rye for a unique and spicy German-style beer that's straight-up classic!

As far as style ticks go this one proved to be one of the hardest to come by. Thankfully BeerFMAndy knows the guys over at Vintage and was able to score a growler from their private stash. Andy you are the MAN! Poured from a growler into a couple tulips.

A: Fairly clear chesnut brown. Small tan head that fades rather quick. Tiny ring of soapy lace.

S: The aroma is a nice mix of sweet malt and tartness from the rye I assume. I seem to pick of heffe spices like clove and coriander. A bit of earthy hop character and even a faint hint of coffee.

T: The rye is more assertive in the flavor but not as strong as I expected. The sweetness is toned down with much more of a tart bite. The finish has a definite coffee aspect.

M: Medium to thin body. Almost no carbonation. This most likely is from the growler fill.

O: This style would be something I could really get into. I would love to try this fresh from the tap.

This rogeenbier comes amber colored with a thin off-white head. The aroma is rather malty, spicy and sweet with that unmistakable hefeweizen yeast character--spicy, cloves, and banana. The flavor is much like the hefeweizen, sweet and malty, with spicy, slightly dry character from the rye. The beer finishes just slightly dry and makes you want more. The carbonation is moderate and body medium, maybe medium-thin. In fact that might be the one thing that could use some improvement. Overall a very tasty beer that I would like to enjoy again.
