Brewed by:
Vintage Brewing Company
Wisconsin, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally brewed by English brewers in the late 1800′s for export to the royal court of the Russian Empire, imperial stouts were once the private beverage of the czars. Very dark, with big roast and dark malt flavors, significantly hopped for balance against a massively chewy full body, and with a warming strength that can melt away the chills of a harsh northern winter…these are the trademarks of an imperial stout.

Per the website: All the depth and complexity of our "standard" Maximilian Stout is taken to majestic new heights via 6+ months aging in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. Unmistakeable notes of vanilla, oak, whiskey, and char are added to the mix, while the forthright, bold flavors of the younger Max Stout meld into a mellow and stately maturity. Very limited supply! approximately 11 % abv.

Served far too cold in a tulip. Significant time was needed to allow this beer to reach optimal temperature, but when it reached the right spot...huzzah.

Black with a thin tight collar.

Smells quite decadent: fudge, chocolate cake, sugary cake icing, half and half, and vanilla. Awesome and enticing ...very promising.

Tastes of chocolate with a touch of smoke and cola. Vanilla combines with a slight bourbon heat on the back end. Not quite as inspirational as the nose, but still quite nice.

Smooth mouthfeel, soft, and medium bodied with a nice viscosity.

Overall, this is by far the best beer that Vintage has produced. I wholeheartedly love the fact that a brewery down the road has taken to experimental barrel aging and has done so in big way. Thank you Vintage.

On tap at Vintage Brewing Co. in Madison, Wisconsin.

A- Dark brown body, almost purplish hued. Half finger offwhite head. No retention or lacing. [3.75]

S- Rich espresso, caramel, milk chocolate, roasted malts. Slightly earthy bitterness. Smells rich and heavy on the espresso flavours. [4.25]

F- As in the nose, more espresso than anything else. Milk chocolate, roasted malts. Not as much caramel. A bit of baker's chocolate bitterness on the backend. Less of the earthy scents found in the nose. Solid complexity, smooth and balanced. [4.25]

M- Medium bodied, on the slightly thinner side for an imperial stout. Good carbonation, soft and slightly sticky. Nice bitter espresso finish. Very drinkable for a 11% imperial stout. [4]

O- Nice imperial stout. Could use a little more body but the overall flavour profile is more than solid. Not much dark fruit to be found like in a RIS, but it more than makes that up with the coffee to give it enough complexity to be enjoyed. [4]
