The second stop on a lone Pubcrawl of New Yorks #40 Street area. It was pretty cold and rather busy after I left the *very* disappointing Times Square Brewery, but it was only a short walk from West 42nd to 44th Street. However, it had come to my attention that Garth Brooks had decided to play in Times Square (the place not the BrewPub) the very afternoon/evening I came here, so the whole of 44th Street was full of large truck trailers being unloaded of tonnes of Audio-Visual gear and Miles of Cables as I fought hard to walk down the street and past the busy Roadies. So much so, that I nearly walked past the St. Andrews Pub, but I managed to find this one relatively easily nonetheless.

As you enter St. Andrews, you walk into an open front area that fills the full width of the entrance, but this soon thins out to a long walkway in the middle and an even longer bar to your right. Geez the Bar is longer than the 18th Hole at the real St. Andrews it seems, suffice to say – yep, it’s a very, very long Bar.

Décor is Scottish, Golf and traditional, all mixed into a strong overall Caledonian feel, but one that is far from tacky. Lots of Scottish breweriana, Whisky adverts and Golfing paraphernalia adorn the walls. The Kilt wearing guy behind the bar was most definitely from Scotland, it’s hard to copy a thick Scots accent like he had, and he was extremely friendly and attentive, even though I was English ;-).

The beer range is wide and served from around 30 or so taps, three banks of 10 Taps, or so, each equally spaced along the massive length of the bar if memory serves me right. The Taps serve a varied range of styles and beers that did not seem to be duplicated, so they could have up to 30 different beers on draft it seems. The range included many British & Irish brews but was heavy on Scottish Ales & Lagers though. I tried a Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA that had the tallest tap handle that I have seen yet, a monstrous Caber like thing carved into a ….well, twisted thistle. There are some US and local brews but they play second fiddle here. The draft brews are all backed up by a good range of Wines and a very impressive range of Single Malt Scotch Whisky’s, including more than a few (and very expensive) rarities, but they do a Whisky sampler, a neat idea that. The colorfully appointed and hand drawn designs on the chalkboards above the length of the Bar will bring you right up to date with the latest Draft specials and freshly tapped Kegs but ask for a Beer Menu and this will update you on the rather impressive Bottled Beer selection, again a heavy selection on British & Irish offerings but it has some tasty brews and a few surprises.

I didn’t eat here but the back latter third of the SAT is dedicated to Diners, you have to walk down here to get to the downstairs restrooms. The Menu looks very good, lost of Scottish & some Irish Fare. A few tables but all very neatly laid out in a cozy atmosphere, four tables are separated by 5ft high dividing walls in the shaped of large ‘+’, the tops of these dividing walls are covered and decorated with more whisky bottles boxes than I have seen in a long time.

All in all, a few Pints and very enjoyable hour or so was spent in here, great staff, draft beer in good condition and a nice selection of food to tempt the senses, though I never tried the latter. A cool place to hang out that is very close to Times Square, although I imagine this place could get very busy, on a slow Monday afternoon it was quiet enough to be enjoyed in its entirety. I liked this place.

Nice selections of Scottish Ales and great food, must try if your in the heart of Midtown,
the guy that takes your phone reservations sounds like Sean Connery, best for an early dinner or late night bite, to avoid the Broadway crowd

Not much in the way of specialty craft beers, just the usual suspects. Definitely the place to go for scotch though. Service was pretty good and the staff was really friendly. Like its sister bar, The Long Room, lots of obnoxious business bros. From more than 1 table I heard "He's our president and he hates America. We're doomed!" Regardless of your political leanings, this is a rather annoying conversation to have to listen to when you just want a few drinks on your vacation. I would definitely go back when it's less busy and check off a few more scotches though.

This is a regular UK focusd pub, the macros are here. On the margin it has picked up a few more interesting than macro choices, however nothing to bring in a beer geek. Nice and above average sized bar though, so not a bad place for a business casual type meeting. Nothing appealed to me this night. A lot of British accents middle aged and above people, most here for the restaurant alone. Several people walking about the place, beer in hand. I agree with the comments that it does not rate as a true place to go.

I'm not sure why this place is on BA... it is not focused on beer, and it is certainly not focused on craft beer.

St. Andrews is a Scottish pub that claims to have the only fully-Scottish menu in New York City. I have not tried the food but looking at the menu I have my doubts about their claim... they got Chinese pot stickers, for instance, some thoroughly non-Scottish scallops with risotto, and so on.

Their Scotch (as in, whiskey) menu is the star here. But you'll pay dearly for it. As for beers, yeah, they have 18 taps, but almost nothing is worth except for some Brooklyn, Belhaven (always on tap) and maybe a Belgian, if any. The others are British standards (Newcastle, Guinness) and crap (Bud, Stella).

Atmosphere is alright, a little chain-y and fake, like all of Times Square, but cozy and warm nonetheless. I've always had good service here, because I've been with people who knew the bartender. Don't know how it would be without the connection.

Beers are pricey at seven dollars a pop, and the food costs as much as that of fancier and better restaurants. This is a place for tourists, mostly, and maybe a homesick Edinburgh expat. Otherwise, no real reason to come here.

I used to come here because it was right by my workplace and we would gather at night after the end of the night shift. Have not come back since I left that place, and do not plan on visiting ever again!

Scottish place that has a great whisky selection in addition to a decent range of craft beers, although most are imported offerings. New location is more upscale than the older and has two floors of tables & two bars. White tableclothes on the tables and professional servers make this a place that is suitable for a more formal occasion yet is great for sneaking in those pints of craft beer or premium single malt Scotch whisky. Prices were surprisingly reasonable for the beer, but pricey for the whisky.

Stopped by here on a pub crawl.

A: A pretty chill atmosphere overall. A nice, Scottish pub that seemed to take on a nice 19th hole, golf bar atmosphere. They flaunted by the bathroom (common trophy room for New York restaurants) that they were listed in the top 50 golf bars according to Golf Digest magazine.

Q: The place was definitely well kept and very clean, including the bathroom (a rarity in NYC). Had no problem with the quality of the beer available as it seemed pretty fresh.

S: The service was pretty good. I did not have to wait too long before getting served each time and the bartender seemed like a nice, chill dude.

S: There was a decent selection. Seemed like about 15 taps and about 20 bottles, all pretty much craft brews. I did check out the place based on the BA description and rating, and I was expecting a little bit more from this place, but it was still pretty good.

Overall, the place was pretty good, but I do not think I would rate it as highly as others based on my experience. Maybe the food, which I did nto have as the kitchen was closed when I arrived, is what puts this place over the top.

Stopped by St. Andrews on a Sat for dinner after an afternoon show. it's a really nice place going with the whole scottish, st. andrews golf theme. food was excellent. i got the prefixed dinner option. it was about 30 bucks. soup, salmon, and dessert. all really good. nice draft selection of about 15 taps and a very nice bottle selection as well. i got the bellhaven scottisch ale which hit the spot and then an old engine oil to finish it off. it's a little bit pricier than your average beer bar but it's definatley worth it.

What a city, you can walk from Belgium to Scotland in under a full block! St Andrews Pub (44th) is almost directly behind BXL(43rd) in New York City, 2 excellent beer bars!

St Andrews has a great selection of draught and bottled beers covering the full range of Scottish Ales as well as a lot of domestic micros, Brooklyn Brewery, for example. During my visit I enjoyed a McEwans draught and a rather fresh bottle of Skullsplitter.

Kick ass food! Scotch Egg is all i'm going to say about that. If you dont know what a Scotch Egg is i suggest you make the trip to St Andrews.

Good Service too. Oh yes...did i mention their Scotch (whiskey) Selection? Its enough to make any Peat-Bomb loving maniac drool...

Located in the Broadway theatre area, this pub offers a cleaner and slightly more upscale experience than other NYC Irish / Scottish pubs. There is a very long bar but surprising few stools, so I guess most patrons prefer to stand during crowded times. Plenty of golf decor throughout the place, even heading down to the restrooms on the basement level. There are plenty of tables off the bar area behind a wall in the back of the place.

They have 20 taps sporting some nice beers like Belhaven Scottish Ale and Wee Heavy, Tennant's, three Brooklyn beers, Guiness, Stella, and a few other european beers you would expect to see here along with some typical macros. The menu sported about 50 bottles that covered a variety of styles.

Service was decent but a bit slow since I was at the back end of the bar. I ordered the Haggas for a snack and a Wee Heavy to wash it down, and they came around pretty quick.

For those into single malt scotch the place had plenty to choose from.

This was a cool place to stop to grab a quick bite and a beer while walking through the area. Worth a stop if you are in the area.

Beautiful pub. One of the nicest in the U.S., and very well kept (which seems to be less and less common these days). Lots of wood, and not overdone with adornment - not that it's not there, because it is, but it's not too glitzy. Oh, and of course, being St. Andrews, it has a golf theme.

Very good, solidly rounded beer selection on tap. Belhaven Scottish Ale and Belhaven Wee Heavy. Tennent's. And then your regular British imports and a few domestics. The bottled selection brings in even more Scottish ales (there aren't actually that many available on draught so that makes complete sense).

The Scotch selection is unbelievable. You'd have to be a pretty jaded imbiber to not find something here that you haven't tasted before.

The service is, unfortunately, lacking. The front of the house staff is inexperienced, and to a great extent, uncaring because they're going to make their money anyway, regardless of how you're treated or how you tip. In a way that's midtown Manhattan in a nutshell, but I've always hoped for more.

Prices are reasonable for the area.

While New York may have other beer bars with a more impressive selection of beer, it can boast no other Scottish pub, particularly one that boasts a consistent supply of Belhaven Wee Heavy - always difficult to find on tap. Why are there so few Scottish pubs? It's a shame there are so few, particularly if Saint Andrews can exemplify the genre - if pubs have genres, that is. Single malt whiskey fans take note: St. Andrews has one of the most extensive selections in the city (or any other outside of Scotland).
In any case, this one is located a few steps from Times Square and its' tourist hordes, many of whom seem to stumble in slack-jawed in search of a quick meal only to find one of the few establishments in this city (or any other) that offers a delicious plate of haggis, probably the most unappreciated pub food ever. (Think spicy sausage that has fallen apart.) You can either sit in the front, an intimate area of high-tops, or you can find a place at the unusually long, bar. If in the mood for more upscale fare, St. Andrews has a full dinner menu - including the aforementioned haggis.

I have been here dozens of times and have always enjoyed the relaxing and convivial atmosphere. Did I mention that the staff wears kilts? William Wallace and Groundskeeper Willie would be proud.

Fun place! Dropped in after a Broadway show to kill a few hours. You'll hear accents from all over the British Isles, from both the staff and the patrons. Live Celtic music on Saturday night from 9pm - 1am, which we were lucky enough to hit. The music really added to the atmosphere. Not sure what it'd be like without music - some of the golf decor didn't really do it for me.

This is actually more of a scotch bar, really. Extensive list of the Scotches carried, presented in a nice binder. The beers available are listed in chalk above the bar. Only one micro's offerings are available, those of Brooklyn Brewery, but the focus is on British and Irish beers: Belhaven, Guinness, Boddingtons, etc. Stella Artois and Budweiser available, too - fortunately they were having a problem with the Bud tap last night. Dining room is in the back, but we didn't eat there so I can't say anything about the food. Raw bar oysters available at the bar. The place is too narrow, very limited seating in the front, but apart from that you're either on a stool at the bar or standing. Staff is helpful and friendly. Mixed bag on glassware... my Brooklyn Weisse came in a Brooklyn Brewery glass, but Boddingtons came in a Miller Lite (!) glass and a Laphroaig scotch came in a Glenlivit glass. Prices were a bit steep, but it's NYC so it's expected.

St. Andrews is my usual happy hour spot on a Thursday or Friday after work, and sometimes a bunch of people from my office will come down to hang out.

From the top: this is a legit Scottish place. The bartenders really do all wear kilts and have Scottish accents. They are really good guys (and girls). One waitress (the short one) can be a bit pushy at times (literally), to the detriment of the drink you may or may not be holding, but when the crowds come in she has to be in order to do her job.

Which brings me to the biggest problem with the place: the people. The ones who go to drink there. For a place a stone's throw from "Do you like comedy?" Times Square it has few tourists, and those that do make their way in are easily discernible. At happy hour, however, the place is packed. The bar is very long, but it's along the rather narrow thoroughfare that takes one from the front to the back of the joint (where there is a large seating area and bathrooms downstairs). Needless to say, if you are standing at the bar,you're probably getting shoved around by the constant stream of people going back and forth, which includes everyone from little kids with their parents and grandparents to drunk suits. And that sucks. Such is life at happy hour near the weekend (or unfortunate bar design).

That said, the good staff help you forget about it, as does the good selection of beer (and whiskey and scotch, my god). The Brooklyn is of course nice and fresh, but they have a considerable number of taps including two kinds of Bellhaven Scotch Ale (I'm big into the Wee Heavy myself). At $6 a pint it's not cheap, but I've certainly paid more for worse beer in New York. St. Andrew's also features a quality list of bottles, though I have rarely strayed from the taps (unless the boss is paying).

Crowd, as mentioned, is a very mixed bag for the dining area in back, but at the bar it's generally professionals coming from the office. Not sure how much B&T ends up there, but I would surmise a fair amount given that the place empties considerably come 8 or so (to the benefit of those still there).

Food, both bar apps and entrees, is pretty good, but again not cheap, and you can find better elsewhere, though I couldn't speak to the more traditional Scottish dishes, which they certainly do have (haggis, anyone?).

Overall a great place, the conditions just make it somewhat hectic. Then again, they're a testament to how good it is. I'd recommend it to anyone, though beware the ebb and flow of the New Yorkers -- which is probably a good refrain for anyone in the city.

I have been going to St. Andrews a few times a year for the last few years. It has a great location right off the heart of Time Square but far enough off that it loses some of the tourists. A friend and I hit the Pub last night and had a beers and some yummy food. The theme of this place is cool and if I was also a Scotch fan I would probably give it 5's across the board as their selection of different Scotches appear huge. The beer selection is also very good with some good local beers on tap and in bottle and also a nice selection of American micros, Belgian's, German's and English beers. I had a glass of the Brooklyner Weisse last night and it was very tasty as usual. The food is equally good. I have had the calamari, raw oysters and cornmeal coated oysters before and they are all great. The chicken pot pie I had last night was also tasty and perfect on a 10 degree night. I have brought several friends here to try the place out and they have all loved it and I plan on showing more friends St. Andrews when we visit the City.

Parked the car at the "easy getaway" Port Authority (you exit the garage, go down the ramp and you're in the Lincoln Tunnel). Got downstairs and out onto 8th Ave, man, it's hopping today. Tourists!!! Away with you!! Okay, let's see, it's roughly 25 minutes 'til Ubu, certainly enough time for a wee beer somewhere...
A small warm room holding a dozen bar tables greets you on entering. Slate block floors, brick walls, large glass chandeliers, TV's in the corners, ornamental dangling snowflakes, and a display of single malt boxes and tubes over the doorway.
Through the room to the bar, which runs (like) all the way downtown. Really, I don't have my glasses on so I can't see where it ends but it goes for a while. Seats about 2 dozen as far as I can tell. The bar itself somewhat sectioned into two areas. The one that's forward has mirrored back sections with shelves of single malts running above the rest of the booze below. Blackboards above this listing taps, wines, new beers, etc, and TV's to each side. The rear area of the bar is backed by a massive display, just shelves and shelves of single malts. Bottled beers are also shown there.
A large dining area sits adjacent to the rear of the bar, broken out into small sectioned areas. Very comfortable. The decor is mostly golf, Whiskey, golf and golf. Track lighting, and sharp wood panelled lowers, bar counters and trim over painted wall uppers with Bobby Brown and other golf prints.
3 towers of 10 taps each at different points along the bar. A total of 20 taps or so, so yes, some of them are dupes, probably the more frequently poured ones. Roughly half of them are Scottish/English/Irish (Belhaven Wee Heavy, Scottish Ale & Twisted Thistle IPA, Fuller's London Pride, Tennant's Lager, Boddingtons, Newcastle, Bass, Guinness, Strongbos Cider) and the rest of them are a mix of blah imports (Spaten Octo, Stella), macros (Bud, Miller Lite), and micros (Brooklyn Lager, Weisse, Pils, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Killians, Yuengling).
Roughly 75 bottled beers, of which about half of them are Scottish and English. Another dozen and a half of them are US micros (with more than a few selections from Magic Hat, Sam Adams and Brooklyn), a dozen of the standard Belgians, a half dozen Germans, and a dozen plus more from places around the world that I wouldn't order a beer from.
Watching the clock, I ordered a Belhaven Wee Heavy which was fresh and clean. Service was pleasant and attentative, no problems there. And, yep, the guy behind the bar with the thinck Scottish broque is wearing a kilt, and everyone else is in plaid. Interesting. Good place for a beer.

This is one cool bar/restaurant. It is done in a Scottish style, a sort of a theme place but well done. Really great food in a teriffic, dark atmoshpere, but upscale. Long, long dark wood bar with a huge selection of Scotch as well as Scotch ales. One of the interesting things they do to maintain the theme is have all the male servers and bartenders wear kilts. Funny. Located right in midtown, not far from Times Square, it is surprisingly not all that run over by tourists, but expensive nevertheless, and I anyway love this place and will return frequently.

Stop in about once a month or so for a late lunch and relief from a bad day at the office. The barmaids are great, get to know you by name (and remember) and treat you well. Food is good, just a little pricey, beers are always fresh, clean lines, etc. Often have a seasonal tap, rotating Brooklyn tap, etc. Good selection but not overly wild. However, the real treat is getting to sample one of over 130 single malts. You can get tasters for a few bucks of just about any single malt. Nice way to finish off a good lunch.

You gotta love a place where the male staff is wearing traditional kilts and speak with heavy Scotish brogues. Times square location, pleanty of English/Irish tourists on hand. Tables up front, long wood bar leading to a cozy sitting area in the rear. Nice selection of mostly Irish/English/Scott. drafts, appropriate glassware employed, impressive world wide bottle list, pub grub, raw bar, full dinner/lunch menu. This is a friendly, inviting place. Excellent for a date, if doing something in midtown/Times sq./Rockefeller ctr etc. Did I mention a vast selection of single malt scotches? Nice place, good athmosphere.

I have been here many times, as it is near the office of one of my biz vendors. I have ALWAYS had a good glass of beer, good temperature and they obviously tend to the proper maintenance of their draft lines. Each of my visits includes at least one pull of Fullers London Pride, one of my favourite beers. Was visiting last week a couple of days, and had a Wee Heavy on Monday night--pure bliss!! I have only had the food a couple of times, as I normally hit Virgils BBQ for their outstanding ribs, when I am in the area, but the food I have had has been OK. Last Monday, I stopped here after dinner (Orso--very good Italian) and beer pit-stop at Virgils, and closed the place--great brew; and Gary, the bartender, treated me real good. Thanks Gary. This is a regular stop whenever I am in NYC. Did I mention that the "eye-candy" is pretty good as well? Looking to get to the sister location, Maggie's Place near GCS. Prosit!

I stopped in here for a drink on a recent trip to New York, and was very pleased. It's located right off Times Square, so it was easy to get to. It was a weekend night, but unlike seemingly everywhere else in the city, this place wasn't overcrowded. There was live Scottish music, and the people in the crowd were friendly and having a good time. Pretty good selection of beers. I had a pint of Bellhaven Wee Heavy, which I'd never seen on bottle or tap before. My wife had a bottle of Grozet. Good friendly service too -- my waiter was a bit hesitant in giving me the Wee Heavy, and offered to get me another if I didn't like it. The accents are fun, too.

So far, this is the only Scottish bar I've found in Manhattan. It's nothing like the bars I've visited in Scotland, but does have very decent authentic food and many Scottish beers. There are 20 beers on tap, with the draught beers listed on blackboards directly behind the bar for all to see. There are always some Scottish, English, and Irish beers on tap, as well as many Brooklyns, Stella, and Sierra Nevada. Plus a few American macros to provide mass appeal. The bottled beer list is pretty impressive. You should have no problem finding something good here. Service is uneven. The place is pretty large, with small tables in front, a long bar in the middle, and a larger seating area toward the back. Very new and clean with wood paneling, plus antiques and memorabilia of golf, Scotland, and old New York throughout.
