Poured from a bottle to a tulip
A - Dark red with a thin foam
S - Very sweet malts evoking red fruits
T - That is really sugary, tastes like a soda or some medicine
M - Carbonation hidden by the sugar
O - Way too sugary I think, the smell inspired me but the taste deceived me.

Enjoyable, dry, and smooth with an acidity akin to red wine vinegar.

330 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before Nov 8 2019 and served at cellar temperature. I've wanted to try this one for a few years now, and am pleased to finally have the chance to do so.

Pours a clear crimson red colour when held to the light, taking on more of a reddish-copper colour without illumination. Nearly an inch of off white, yellow-tinged head is seated atop initially, but dissipates for the next several minutes, resulting in the production of a smooth, foamy cap and collar combo. Minimal lace. Red apples and sour cherries on the nose, with added notes of oak, cranberry, vanilla and a slight touch of wine vinegar. Pretty typical of the style thus far.

A delicious Flanders red, featuring an appealing array of fruit flavours amidst a potent, puckering acidity - red apple skin, tart green apple flesh, raspberry and cranberry all come to mind. Sour cherries and red wine vinegar also come through, with vinous flavours interacting nicely with those of the oak. Finishes with more vinegar acidity/berry tartness and a faint hint of vanilla, followed by a musty, sour aftertaste that lingers on the palate. Light in body, perhaps trending towards medium; the texture is smooth, soft and wet, with the low carbonation levels capable of producing only a gentle prickling sensation on the tongue.

Final Grade: 4.28, an artful A-. Make no mistake - if you're not a fan of sourness, then Cuvée Des Jacobins Rouge is something you'll want to actively avoid. Its acidity is assertive, puckering, and near-relentless throughout the course of each sip, which means this is not a beer that I would necessarily recommend to someone unfamiliar with these styles. That being said - the red berry/fruit flavours and vinegar acidity work beautifully together, while the subtle oak character brings it all together nicely. A quality Flanders red; I'll definitely need to grab another bottle (or three) for safe keeping.

Very refreshing and delicious sour beer. Flavours of sour cherries, apples and vanilla with a touch of oakiness. Tartness is not overdone. Nicely balanced beer.

18 month old bottle. Poured into a teku. Appearance is a clear, dark mohagany red with a thin head that quickly dissipates to a persistent ring and with almost no lace. Smell is bright with vinous fruit and detectable vinegary sourness. Taste has some nice complexity. Puckeringly sour, but not overwhelming. Notes of cherries and vanilla combine with oak. Feel is medium-thin and very dry. Overall, a very solid and complex Flemish beer. It might have gone past it's peak a little, but was still excellent.

Sour, great to cut fatty foods but got too sour after the first 8oz or so. An obviously great beer though.

On tap at Blind Tiger Alehouse NYC
Clear amber maroon, tart and musty, hints of mulch and pine sap, mellowing to a mild watermelon jolly rancher sweetness. Jarring and comforting.
