August 12th 2015 bottle. Dark red liquid sitting under an inch of foam. Smells of both sour and sweet cherries. Taste is sour cherries dominant, almost 1 dimensional but what a state to be in. Tastes kinda woody too. Light bodied with ample carbonation. I dig it.

Attempted to enjoy this recently at lunch share and it just wasn't as good as many other Flanders Reds I have had in the past. Solid for the style but I have had better.

Amber colour, medium head that fades to a thin layer, good lace. Aroma is acid, red fruits, chocolate, vanilla, apples. Palate is acid, sharp, normal carbonation.. Taste of red fruits, cider, pepper, apples.

Rouge pours a dark deep red color, with no head, but lots of bubbles. Very sour aroma, with hints of yeast. Taste is also very sour, nice dry fruit flavors, with a mellow spice note. Pretty fizzy, but nice flavors. Overall, its a very tasty and very big sour red ale.

Appearance - Pours deep ruby red with thin off white head that quickly dissipates. No lacing.

Aroma - Sour cherries, vinegar, cranberries, lemon, ripe peaches. There is a slight sweetness to it as well.

Taste - Jaw puckering tartness, great sour flavors cherry, lime, with a touch of sweetness. It really reminds me of a sour candy. Well balanced sour and sweet.

Feel - Light side of medium, well carbonated, nice tart bite to the mouth.

Overall - A very good Flanders, great flavors nice feel.

1,150th review! A bottle of this legendary fine Flemish Ale served cool into a Gouden Carolus chalice. Purchased this bottle (among others) from the LCBO for $3.95 CDN.

Appearance - A gorgeous, clear, dark amber colored beer spills out into the glass. A finger and a bit of fluffy off-white head is poured, leaving behind substantial amounts of streaky lacing.

Smell - oak initially, then strong sour aroma that borders on balsamic but never quite gets there. An underlying richness gives a suggestion of aged cherries. Wood and vinegar are also present, but very complex to decipher. Grapes as well.

Taste - Very tart and sour initially. So sour the taste is lime-ish flavor, sour cherries and balsamic. Subtle wood and aroma flavors come into being and there is even a brief stage of malty goodness. Some breads lurking in the background and earthy undertone. Yet simultaneously rich.

Mouthfeel - Seems fine but ends superbly, mouth-puckeringly dry. Carbonation is delicate.

Overall - To me it seems a half peg below Grand Cru by Rodenbach (and it's iterations of vintage ales) but definitely a full peg above the balance of the competition. A superbly crafted Flanders ale that is well worthy trying and would probably make every beer writers book of "500 beers you have to try before you die."

Received from the LCBO. Poured into a snifter at about 6 Celsius.
A - Pours a beautiful ruby red colour. Head subsides quickly leaving foam lacing around glass and trace of head.
S - Smell of sweet cherries, some underlying vanilla. Really taking my time with the aromas here. I'm new to the sour beers so want to appreciate the newness. Really is a pleasant smell.
T - Immediately hit by sweetness and tart cherry. Sweetness washes away leaving the tart and vinegar that ends with sourness along the sides of the tongue. Dryness and puckering on the finish. For all the different flavors they blend well together.
M - Feels silky and oily in the mouth. Carbonation pleasantly cascades across the tongue.
O - I really like this beer and can see myself buying more of the sour ale style. The tastes stay with you. A beer to sip and enjoy over time. It would be interesting to try a North American take of this style.
