This is one of the beers that Gritty's makes usually around St. Patty's each year. This year, it is only available at the Freeport location. They have it served both on-tap or on cask, I had both on St. Patty's day and decided to go with the on-tap review even though I'll be reviewing both. Not sure what the strength is, but they call it Strong Oatmeal Stout or S.O.S. for short.
On-tap: Pours a dark brown almost black color, very nice looking foamy head, barely fades at all and stays the entire time and leaves lacing as it is drank, I want to say it's nitro-tap but I can't be certain right now.
Cask: The head looks quite different, larger bubbles that pop and fade fast, the lacing is lacking compared to the regular tap.
On-tap: Smell is pretty much all malt, very faint dark fruit aroma.
Cask: The aroma is much stronger and more complex than the on-tap serving, can definitely make out more sweetness along with the dark fruit.
On-tap: Taste is incredibly smooth and creamy with a good roasted malt backbone, goes down quite easily, maybe a bit too easy considering they call it "strong", although the strength didn't really hit me all that much.
Cask: The flavors really shine here with some nice dark fruit aspects coming through, the creaminess is not as high but the taste really kicks it up a notch, served slightly cooler than room temp.
If you find yourself in Freeport right about now, be sure to stop on by, hopefully you'll know which tap you want it on, or why not get both like I did.
