Ah Gritty's... Well, it's in the top 10 brewpubs in the country. Um, what? How the hell is that possible in Freeport, Maine? There are two key factors at work, here... One is about being on the main drag in the main tourist destination for the state (that's a pretty big factor!). The other is about being the closest drinking establishment to several of the LL Bean factories (warehouses, whatever). Well, trust me, there's always a healthy Bean group at Gritty's. And there's always a healthy group of tourists.

It's pretty clean and light and "airy" for a brew pub. Which is kind of nice given how dark and closed in many feel. And yet the very diversity of the people coming in keeps it from being, for me, a good "local".

They try to go local and a little special on the food menu and specials with things like scallop wraps, for example. Most of the non-specials are pub food. The calamari that I had today was VERY BAD.

So, yeah, that was trash talk. Well, the cask beer there is really quite good. I mean, wow. The Halloween on cask is the top. Wow. Awesome. Incredible. I mean, hey, it's probably right up there as Maine's second-best beer. No kidding. Good stuff.

Yes, yes, it's surely worth it if you're in the area to stop by for a pint. Try to avoid going on a weekday from 3 to 5 and, well, lunch time in summer is crazy busy. Oh, and don't go hungry!

Kinda touristy but in a good way. With LL Bean being the big draw there is certainly no shortage of people in Freeport and the pressure to get people to your establishment has to be scary, but Gritty's does well. And for a good reason. Good food, great service, and some decent beers. I stop there just about every time I'm in Freeport.

The atmosphere reminds me of a ski lodge. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Even when the place was packed. Friendly to the kids also.

sister restaurant of the Portland based grittys, a fun place to visit, but the food is a lot better than the beer. I worked my way through the whole lineup, but was unimpressed by any of them, even finding the ipa to be quite poor. the lobster rolls and lobster mac and cheese were right on though, as was the rhubarb dessert. maybe six or seven beers on, in an open seating loud beer hall type setting. big back deck and yard, and one of those places where you sit with strangers, which is cool if you are traveling. service was decent considering how busy it was, and again, the food was very good. not really a beer destination though, I found them all to be generic and weak in some ways, undercarbonated, and similar in a bad way. the fermenters were neat though, insulated with brick, never seen that before. overall a good stop for a meal on the maine brewery trip, but the beers were less than stellar, and that's the most important thing.

Stopped here for lunch the other day. Beer selection was OK, as they have the standard Gritty’s fare. The beers are good, with a fairly varied selection. the food was fairly standard pub offerings. It was tasty and was served quickly. The service was also good. Well worth a stop when in the area.
