Poured into a snifter from a 750ml bottle.
Brewed: 2011
Bottled: 2013

Pours a deep rich dark garnet color with some ruby hues. There is a nice pink foamy lively head that forms. The head is lively and recedes quickly.

Aroma is very nice. Notes of funky sand musty wood with strong tart vinegary notes. Notes of sour lemon. Mild cherry sweetness mixed in with intense wild cherry tart notes. There is some nice chalky yeast notes in the nose. There are also some nice vinous notes to the brew.

Flavor starts off insanely tart. Dry, wild cherry tart notes mixed in with some funky and musty wood notes. As the brew warms some more slight sweet cherry notes are present. There is a chalky yeasty note to the brew along the middle of it that goes along well with the tartness.

The brew is dry and very tart. Definitely intended for sharing.

This is 2 year old lambic with sour cherries added. No young lambic is added, therefore it is not a gueuze. It is purposely still, to replicate cask kriekenlambik served on draft in traditional Belgian lambic cafés. Straight lambic is not carbonated by design.

Blood red crimson, crystal clear and sanguine, pink tinged foam on the surface fizzles and remains for a minute or three. Not much lacing, glassy surface with some stray bubbles rising around the edges.

Fantastic aroma of dark sour cherries, rich and intense. Trace vanilla from the oak and almond from the cherry pits, floral cherry blossoms at room temp. Cherry pie with graham cracker crust.

Moderately sour at first, and bursting with bright cherries. Intense fruit flavor, very dry and oaky in the finish. Tannic cherry skins, almond, light minerality. Clean and dry, nuanced flavors. Light bodied with lower carbonation, but it is there. This is really a top notch kriek, and a step above the rest of the Lambickx series.

Pours a ruby red body, one finger pink head with good retention. Thin splotches of lacing remain. Smells primarily of cherries, as expected, but also notable for a moderate acetic presence, hay, leather and wheat. Not complicated, but the nose is quite strong. Flavour is similarly hefty on the acetic acid, cherry skin, hay, oak, cherry essence, leather, funk. Not complicated yet very cherry forward. No off-flavours that I can taste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, good carbonation, crisp and effervescent, mildly drying, a fair amount of acidity. Overall, very tasty kriek that isn't too far off from the usual suspects that people chase after. It's likely on a shelf near you, so it's definitely worth grabbing one if you have not had the chance to sample this.

In celebration of Vanberg & DeWulf's birthday, its the perfect opportunity to crack this sour beauty open. Where a certain level of quality, intensity, and intrigue is expected... then comes, "whoa!"

The cherry-infused Gueuze kicks of with a dark mauve color and a ruby-stained head. Its body is increasingly darker toward the center as notions of black cherry are easy to imagine. Its pinkish, purple-ish head is both fizzy and froathy as it captivates the eye with is peculiar color. Random and light lace is a welcome, so is its surprising steadfast retaining sheet of foam considering that sour ales don't usually do either particularly well.

Obvious sour notes tease the nose, but what leads the way is the unmistakable twang of tart cherries. Rich and sour at the same time, and aura of balsamic wafts about while earthen tones of sea air, curing leather, dried limes, crab apple, weathered oak and savory game come alive as the nose gets right in there! Heading into the first sip, its dry red wine scent and marzipan sweet nuttiness is gaining traction.

And then to t-t-t-taste.... (whew, my face nearly stuck that way), the sourness is much more intense than the nose let on. Its distinctive taste of dark and sour cherries is succulent enough to encourage exploration but its white cider vinegar notes says, "huh-uh". Wiping on to a quick finish, its briny, limey, woody, and deeply earthen taste goes quick as is more measurable in its echoes in aftertaste that come post-finish. Its slight bitterness comes across as red wine and balsamic tannin while and almond-like silkiness buffers against a little of the sourness, with a smack of mineral late.

Malty-dry from start to finish, there's the slimmest of weight that separates it from wine and more robust vinegar. Its faint richness gives the acidity and spicy notes structure that grounds its "wild" and gamey flavors. its savory-sourness extends into a late crispness, cleanliness and highly refreshing taste that begs for shellfish and cheesecake.

Following up on the heels of Lambickx, this Krieken version does even better! Its cherry flavor adds more complexity that braids into the base beer matrix with ease and confidence, without any distracting sweetness, and with those highly coveted almond notes.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2013 vintage bottling. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 1 finger foamy pink head with poor retention, that reduces to a thin ring fairly quickly. Minimal lacing on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Very nice color and clarity. Aromas of huge sour black cherry, green apple, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, leather, oak, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of dark cherry, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and oak notes; with great strength. Taste of huge sour black cherry, green apple, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, leather, oak, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Large amount of fruity/acidic tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart black cherry, green apple, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, leather, oak, musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and robustness of black cherry, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and oak flavors; with a solid sweetness/acidic balance and minimal cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, acidic, and tannic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with no minimal present after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely incredible Kriek lambic style! All around insane robustness and complexity of big dark cherry, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and oak flavors; and nicely smooth to sip on even with the large amount of acidity. An incredibly amazing offering.

Dark red brew, pretty clear at the edges, topped by a decent pink head with reasonable retention.

Suitably funky aroma, carrying a hint of cherries - pulp, pit, peel, and all. Not too particularly sour on the aroma, but there's a definite tartness.

Flavor follows the nose. Great balance of tartness and sour, milky wheat malt feel, cherries, wood, and funky yeast. Incredible cherry flavor on the finish; literally tastes like biting into a fresh cherry.

Very active brew; slick mouthfeel. Impressively tart; lots of puckering.

This is an excellent Kriek with a mouthfeel unlike any I have ever experienced. It's not among the funkiest, but it scratches that itch, while providing a very organic cherry flavor. Very tart and sour.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Bright red. Deep red. No head, but it's still pretty.

Smell - Juicy rich cherry. Some lemony acidity.

Taste - More of a lambic flavor than the aroma implies. Cherry flavor is still strong, but less sweet and juicy. Grainy and lemony tang. Oaky and a minimal funk.

Mouthfeel - Medium light body. Sour. Low carbonation.

Overall - Much better than the base lambic. Delicious cherry flavor.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy red color Lambic with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of tart cherry notes with some oak and funky ester. Taste is a nice mix of tart cherry notes with some oak and vinous notes and some funky barnyard notes and limited acidity. Body is full with good carbonation. I was anticipating much but I was pleasantly surprised by the balance and complexity of this beer.
