Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
A nice reddish-brown color with a beige 1 inch head, which disappeared quickly. A hint of lacing remained on the glass.

The aroma was mostly malt, with some burnt smell and a little alcohol.

The taste was earthy, malty, a little sour, with a little carbonation.

This beer is okay, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it, and can't imagine I would choose it over anything else that was available.

12 oz green bottle

St. Pauli Girl Special Dark poured a chestnut brown with a small bubbly off-white head that faded very quickly leaving spotty lacing behind. The aroma is dominated by light bread malt and a little burnt toast. The flavor begins with toasted malt, then evolves into light bitterness and finishes with a burn toast taste. Mouth feel is light and crisp with average carbonation.

St. Pauli Girl Special Dark is an easy drinking light flavored Dunkel – making it a good session brew. If you are looking for a change of pace from a light in color [golden lager] beer to drink during the hot months this could be the one for you.

Look: Dark brown with a bit of red throughout a 1/3 inch head and ok retention

Smell: A bit of skunk upfront with some toast and malt on the back end

Taste: Some raisin and fig upfront and finishes with some caramel malt

Mouthfeel: Is a bit thin and low on the carbonation side

Overall: This beer does not have any characters that make you want to drink more than one. Not recommended by this guy

12oz Bottle

Appearance - Clear reddish brown colour with a large size fizzy beige coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, breads/grains, skunk

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, light hops, grains, and some dark fruits - perhaps raisins. There is also a tiny bit of a smokiness. The beer finishes with a grainy and malt aftertaste.

Overall - It basically tastes like your basic euro-lager with a touch of smoke and raisins.. It's nothing spectacular but it was quite drinkable. Not something I'd buy again however.

Smells slightly of honey and malty sugar. In the mouth, nuts and dark sugars proliferate: caramels, toffees and deep syrups. Lightly hopped and sparkling on the tongue, this brew is quite flavorful, and has a mouthfeel of carbonated water. Quite decent fare; a good introduction to brown ales and such medium-heavy fares for those not acquainted with anything bearing any severity.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Dark brown lager with light amber highlights around the edges. Poors a thick tan 2-finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves a wispy lace.

S: Mild caramel aroma with hints of floral hops and grains.

T: Malt sweetness with hints of floral hops and grains. This doesn’t seem like a dark beer to me – taste more like a pilsner.

M: Thin body and medium to low carbonation

O: Eh - nothing special about this beer. Poor example of a dark lager in my opinion.

Poured from a green 12 oz. bottle. Has a pretty dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mostly of malts. Taste has malts, a bit of nuttiness, some grains, just a touch of hops. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

A-dark cherry brown with a nice cream colored head that thins. looks beautiful

S-caramel, honey, and breadiness. smells quite good and solid actually.

T-comes in with a decent taste of roasted barley. its not of wonderful quality, but its everything you want your German lager to be. the after-taste is slightly bitter with burnt caramel breadiness.

M-medium carbonation with a dry finish. very light bodied

O-for what it is, i love it. if you're in the mood for a dark german lager, this will hit the spot.

Poured into a standard pint glass.

A - Dark brown coloration, nice 2 finger head which displayed some moderate retention and even left some washy lacing behind.

S - Hmm, some chocolate malts perhaps, but there isn't much here to report. Nothing off though, either.

T - Grassy hops hit the palate first, followed by a sweet malt body. Although it is nicely balanced, there is a slight skunky flavor that is distracting.

M - Light crisp body, medium carbonation level, and a watery finish.

D - Not bad overall, I wouldn't turn one down if offered. I'd very much like to taste it fresh or from a keg, I get the impression that it would fare much better than the imported bottles.

This beer poured out as a nice shade of brown, the head was a little fizzy but still had some left over clumps on top. The smell of the beer had a little bit of the skunky lager aroma going on but was almost hidden by the sweeter malts in the brew. The taste of this brew had good flavor all around. The sweet caramel malts work well with the lager elements. The mouthfeel was pretty good, on the lighter side but had enough body to remain flavorful. Overall I enjoy this beer from time to time. I would pick it over a Becks Dark and a few others out there any day.

Poured a nice hazelnut brown, very clear with a smallish off white head that quicly faded leaving just a token little bit of lace ring on the top. Nice carbonation could be seen rippling from the bottom

Light, nutty a bit with alot of grain, decent amount of sweetness came through on the back Yummy, very light but a good malty lager. Had a bit of a roasted taste to it, and a touch of sweetness as well. Decent profile. Crisp, clean, quick finish. Nice carbonation made the drinking easy, and the lightness let it go down quick

Overall this was a nice little dark lager. Better then I expected. It was very light in feel and flavor, and served cold went down very easily.

A- Dark garnet color, 1 finger tan head, lacing is ok. color is what really stands out for this one.

S- The date on the bottle shows best by Sept of 2011. upon first whiff of this one i have to say it smells pretty "skunky". Some malty flavors with a bit of roasted yeast.

T- Earthy hops and caramel. Has a bitterness to it, almost sour. A touch of maltiness on the back end and a quite sour finish.

M- Medium body thickness with a foam sensation to it.

O- Regardless of the Best by date, I think I may have gotten a bad beer here. Didn't finish this one. Will post an update in the future.

Decided to give this one a whirl after trying the normal St. Pauli Girl lager. 12. oz bottle with "Best Before" date of 05/2011. Poured into a pilsner glass; review taken from shorthand notes, consumed on 04/01/2011.

Appearance: A very nice looking dark lager. The body is a deep red/burgundy with hints of brown and gold, topped by a ivory-colored head of 2 fingers, which settles down to a cap of foam and leaves some nice lacing behind on the glass. If nothing else, this looks good.

Smell: Again, not bad, but not great. The European yeast strains automatically add that familiar sulphur character to the smell, but this takes a backseat to some nondescript roasted malt and caramel backed by some standard earthy and dusty hops. The smell overall is rather faint, and the "skunky" characteristics are a little offputting for a darker lager.

Taste: Totally linear with the smell - Roasted malt followed by earthy hops on the middle of the palate, finished by some generic bread notes in the finish, combining with a slightly sour and funky yeast edge (skunk?). Goes down pretty smooth, I can see this as a solid beer for the fall season. Decent dark lager, but I've certainly had better.

Mouthfeel: A little thicker than normal St. Pauli Girl. Medium thickness of body is complimented by crisp carbonation which gives a smooth and non-drying finish. Goes down very smoothly and leaves some malt flavors lingering.

Overall: Meh. If you want a dark Euro lager, you can probably do better; but this isn't bad in and of itself. Ho-hum.

Pours a clear brown, amber with a slightly off white copious head with good side laceing.
Aroma: Typical Euro beer in a green bottle, this beer is "skunky". When beers are skunky, I have trouble with dedecting much else.
Taste: a little on the creamy side. Do pick up some toasty malts. Dry and bitter but mostly the skunky aroma dominates. A beer that I won't ever order in a bar or resturant.

A- Like a cola, dark brown with a frothy head that fades fast into a thin ring of foam, very little spotty lace.

S- Roasted malts, caramels, nutty with earthy and floral hints. Slight skunk, but not pungent.

T- Clean and muted roasted malt, hints of coffee, caramel, and nutty notes. Earthy and floral hints with an off taste of mineral water and a touch of skunk.

M- Thin, smooth, and over carbonated. Watery

D- Smooth enough, but mineral taste and skunk make it hard to drink. Thin but not as watery as most. Points for that.

Pours a dark mahogany color, thin cap of khaki head, diminishing quickly. Scent is pale, mostly carmel malt and some earthy hops. Taste starts of with a mild sweetness and some earthyness follow. Once again, another beer without many flaws, except that it is weak, light and watery. All i can say is that a cheap amber lager beats a cheap pale lager any day.

St. Pauli Girl Special Dark has a thick, beige head and a clear, highly-filtered, reddish-brown dark appearance, with lots of carbonation. There is a little bit of lacing left down the glass, but not much. The aroma is a tad skunky (green bottle), and roasted barely predominates. Taste is again lightly roasted barley malt, and the hop bitterness is surprisingly pronounced. Mouth-feel is pretty light and watery, and St. Pauli Girl Special Dark finishes refreshing. This is a pretty nice beer.

Appearance - Clear dark brown/ruby color. Some burnt orange highlights around the edges. Off white head that was non-existant and left little to no lacing. The color, however is not horrendous.

Smell - Some dark, slightly toasted grain. The grain presence is not overly astringent. Some dry wheat or breadiness is present also. Even getting a "tea" aroma.

Taste - Again, some toasted grain comes out first with the flavor. A touch of tobacco flavoring and some dark dry malt.

Mouthfeel - Medium to light mouthfeel that was mostly dry and rather smooth. Put some on the palate, but not a whole, whole lot.

Drinkability - Well.... I do like this better than the St. Pauli Girl Lager. This wold be ok on those Fall afternoons. Probably won't make a special trip for this beer, but I can drink it. Mostly average to slightly below average in my opinion.

Pretty average all around. Dark brown, clear, white head, no lacing.
Slight malty smell, not much smell at all.
Tastes of malt, prunes, plums. Slight hops. Strange aftertaste but goes down smooth. Strongly carbonated, even when poured out. Can taste the alcohol.
Better than the regular St Pauli, more drinkable. But not better than average for something brown/dark.

I poured this out into my Mass Krug from a 12 oz bottle and hoping to fill it with more. Clear born on date of APR 2011. This beer is a clear medium brown with a white head that lingers. Smells like toasted Caramunich malt, grain, and slightly floral...more than I expected. Taste is not to complex, toasted malts, crusty bread, and a medicinal hops with a grassy aftertaste. Mouthfeel is thin and not to much carbonation is present. It goes down fast and is thirst quenching which is what A dunkel is supposed to do! Correct to style. I am going to go fill the entire krug at this time. Very drinkable and very sociable. Solid cheap beer!

A- very dark brown with a nice active tan head.

S- light malt smell with a nice hop aroma.

T- very nice balance, I can taste some chocolate malt with some other malt. At the same time the hops balance it nicely and have their own flavor in the beer.

M- good mouthfeel that invites me to drink more.

D- very good dark lager, I will definately have it again.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle marked Best Before 10/2010 into a mug.

Appearance: Dark brown with a fingers worth of head. Carbonation looks great, there's some nice bobbles rising up to the head.

Smell: Carameled malts and grassy hops dominate the smell. Smells a bit rough when immediately poured, but mellows out after a few minutes.

Taste: Pretty decent. Hits the mouth with some sharp hops and a bit of a caramel taste. Some grains and yeasts come in at the end, along with a very slight but not unpleasant metallic taste. It almost helps balance the caramel and is, for once, welcome. Overall is a pretty light taste for the flavors present.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a pretty high level of carbonation. Nothing exceptional, but nothing wrong.

Drinkability: Goes down pretty easy. Again, nothing exceptional.

This is a pretty average brew all around. I could see it being nice as a lighter beer with some "heavier" taste profiles. I bought this on special for 3 bucks for a six-pack, and will probably pick up another if there's any left at my next visit. For the full 7-8 dollars I've seen it elsewhere, it may not be worth it.

Glass - Mug

A - Dark brown & see through. It produced a 1-2 finger off white head that dissipated to a thin ring quickly. You can see it's got around moderate C02 and it held that thin ring throughout consumption but left no lacing.

S - Right off I get prominent grassy & almost skunky like hop aroma's. I get soft bread caramel like malts underneath the herbal hop aroma. Slight toast, very soft aroma. Nothing off putting.

T - Grassy hop flavors aren't as upfront as in the aroma. Soft toast, bread, caramel and nutty malts. A bit of butter notes as well. It finishes with just a touch of a lemon citrus but it's quickly washed out by all the semi sweet bready malts. Mild bitterness rounds out this beer well.

M - A little thin with a moderate crispness. Around a lite bodied brew.

D - Very very drinkable although the C02 was a bit too high for my liking. Still a decent Dunkel with a great price, and drinkable enough to quaff a six pack or more, to me anyway. Definitely worth a try, I'd buy again if low on cash. Cheers!

glass: Mug

a: Dark brown color, fizzy 2-3 finger tan head. No lacing but swirling consistently kicks up a good head.

s: Very grassy, maybe a little skunked. Lots of toasted cracker, nuts and a bit of grape and cherry underneath.

m: Light, medium CO2

t: Tartness is the first thing i notice. Not so much sour as it is tart. Lots of cracker and caramel in the taste but it takes a back seat to tart cherry and acidic apple. Finishes watery but clean.

d: Moderately drinkable, it's alright.. Won't be buying again.

Clear and dark amber, decent head but it didn't last too long, not much lacing.

Dark caramel malts and sweet caramel dominate the light smell.

It tastes nicely of caramel, roasted malts and grains. Not very dunkel-ish, more dark lager-ish. Not bad but not a great beer either.

It's very average in the mouth, kinda slick and watery overall.

Drinks slightly less well than average for the style. I wouldn't buy it very often.
