2 finger very lite tan head drops leaving splotchy lacing.. very clear chesnut brew.

Aroma is all dark toasted malts .. whaffs of bottle cap as it warms.. aluminum even though it came from a (green) bottle.

Sorta discombobulated palate.. Dunkels are one of my favorite styles if done right.. this one seems a little scattered and confused. Minerally dark malts touches of chocolate... lite skunk but no doubt it is there... This brew needs direction and a brown bottle to go with the brown malts... even then... it needs more brown malts and a touch more body across the board... uninspiring.

I only bought the St. Pauli Girl brews today to review; in the past, I've purchased them on brew days if I was attempting that particular style.. after tonight, I can honestly say, I will never buy this company's brews ever again.

Ring of head, clear, medium/dark brown body.

Aroma is slight roast, slight caramel, and a little coffee.

There is a slight plastic taste that hurts this beer a bit. There's some roast, weak coffee, and molasses. No hop bitterness at the end.

Full carbonation and pretty drying.

Other that the slight plastic flavor, not a bad beer.

Since the description on the label was nothing more helpful than "Special Dark", I suspected I was in for a rather pedestrian beer. I usually buy stouts and brown ales, but my wife picked up a sixer of this at the local mega-grocery because, as she said, "it was all they had left."

Poured it into a glass, got very little in the way of foamy head. What head there was quickly dissipated in seconds. Did not get a pleasant smell, either, in fact to be honest it smelled very skunky, not fresh, and smelled too much like beer that's been left in the boat on a hot summer afternoon...

The color was decent however, about what I expected, but the pour was weak, the aroma unpleasant, and my mouth was already prejudiced against what it might taste. Over the tongue, very thin mouthfeel, not robust, nothing bold about it, pretty unimpressive.

I have had Dunkels before, and this one did not make a good impression, it was pretty bland. But I will do my own beer shopping from now on, and stick to my stouts and ales.

St. Pauli Girl Special Dark pours a thin, dark, blackish brown. There is no major head, but a little foam puddle in the middle of the glass. The smell is nicely distict of a German lager. Initially, the taste is tart with a high caronation feel. This brew burned while presented too cold; however, it mellowed shortley after getting closer to room temp. Overall it got a bit better, but it didn't get great.

A - Poured a a dark brown color with a tan head that dissipates rather quickly

S - Is of sweet malt with caramel scents

T - Is of roasted malt backed up by some caramel it smells better than it tastes

M - This is a medium bodied beer

D - I was rather disappointed with this beer I don't know why but I expected more from it when its really just an average beer if that

Appearance - Pours a very dark reddish black with a 1.5 finger head that quickly diminishes down to a very thin lace. The green bottle is a bit of a turnoff but that's just getting picky.

Smell - Not a whole lot comes through on the nose here. It's mostly Malt up front with a little bit of chocolate and caramel coming through.

Taste - I fail to find anything overly complex about this brew. To me, it's a little bit thin with only malt and a hint of cofee. I would have liked to see some thicker taste notes here.

Mouthfeel - low carbonation gives way to a semi-clean finish with a malty-chocolate finish.

Drinkability - Got a sixer of these a few months ago. I am just getting around to finishing them now. It is a drinkable, but not very complex brew. For those who are more into BMC, this might be a good segway-dark beer.

pours a deep chestnut with quickly dissipating head of off white foam.

aroma is quite like their golden lager (?), with intense herbal, and slightly fruity german hops. there's a faint whiff of some munich, toasty, chocolate-y-ness, but it's faint.

taste- the malt makes a brief appearance in expected german quality, however at a very low volume... subtle. and the hops come back. it's an incredibly light bodied beer. in my opinion it's a tad over-hopped for a dark, but delicious none the less. finishing bright and dry with a slight wine-y fruit note.

mouthfeel- as a german lager, i think it fits the bill. there's a satisfying malt character and beautiful hops on the palate giving it a very refreshing edge but holding back the malt. the beer is well enough balanced overall. i wish it had a tad more oomph in the malt department, but it is what it is.

drinkablility- try this on your friends who claim to not like dark beers. one could pound these all day, refreshing as they are with sophisticated, however slight, malty nuances.. made for the dark beer lover on a very hot beach.

Poured nicely and looked as if it were going to be a pretty good beer, but man was I wrong. The looks are very deceiving regarding this beer. It looks tasty, smells like nothing in particular, and tastes like seltzer water mixed with a dark beer. I am very disappointed in this beer.

Poured from a 12 bottle to a pint glass the liquid is a nice translucent dark brown with good carbonation. The head is ok a little over on finger, tan and leaves little lace.

The smell is good dark caramel and slightly sweet, malt.

The taste is good as well, Not a rich and taosty as I remember from years ago but not a bad dunkel at all. slightly sweet dark caramel malt with , mild hops to give great balance.

The mouthfeel is off a tad, not quite medium body and a soda pop like carbonation.

The drinkability is ok, not a brew I would buy but not offensive by any stretch. Prosit MK

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. pours a dark brown color with garnet highlights. head is ephemeral and loose.

aroma is of maramel malt and munich malt. the smell has a sweet character, with a grainy note.

taste is similar, with a malty character and a touch of black malts, bringing a bit of roasted malt.

mouthfeel is flabby. the brew is medium bodied, without much of a statement to call its own.

drinkability is decent. the structure does not hold together very well, with a sporadic flavor profile. not very impressive

It pours out a dark color with little head and smells of a toasty caramel. It tastes smooth with little carbonation. There is a taste of coffee and caramel. It goes down nicely but overall just isnt a great beer. I would drink it again but wouldnt rush out to buy it.

Pured into a Pint glass from a single bought at a store, The Store.

A: Dark Brown to Amber, not too carbonated (at all) slight off-white head which disappeared quickly and left no lace.

S: Toasted caramel in smell.

T: Slightly grainy, caramel, very little bitterness (as per the style)

M: Light, watery even, very little carbonation

D: Goes down quick but not necessarily a good thing, could drink these all day long f they were free, but I wouldn't bother buying one again.

Overall worth a try to be able to look at the pretty girl on the bottle and thats about it.

Poured into a mug. Deep almost black with tan head. Smells of coffee grinds and slightly herbal. Tastes of chocolate and coffee, some citrus notes. An average brew, but very acceptable. Nothing wrong with a cold one of these if there isn't a lot to choose from. Had this one at a pool hall.

Classic burnt caramel color with an even, full head. Looks pretty darn good.

Moderately roasted with a mild noble hop aroma (either Saaz or Hallertauer). Butterscotch-y diacetyl IS detectable, however.

Fleeting roasted malt leads into a flavor that seems more in line with a bock. Unfortunately, the bock nature is more in line with sub-par American interpretations of the style (see: Shiner) and the same corn sweetness accompanies this beer.

Creamy and rich, the body is the least troublesome aspect of the beer. Quite good in this area. However, the sweetness morphs into a stale grain flavor which greatly hurts the drinkability.

St. Pauli Girl Special Dark lager pours a finger of tan foam over a
deep coffee colored brew. This example shows no carbonation at
all, and the nose is toasty barley malt and a meadow-y hop aroma.
The flavor is dark malt up front with molasses and coffee notes, and
a mild grassy hop finish. The body a bit thin, but crisp and tingly in
the mouth. It's not bad, but the fact of the matter is there's better and
fresher being made in the states. This is not to put down German
beers- there are many remarkable ones available here- it's just that
this one is merely okey-dokey.

Pours brown with some ruby notes and a slightly off-white head that dissipated rather quickly. Not much aroma to speak of, maybe some small notes of caramel. Taste is slightly metallic with a sweet caramel flavor coming throught. Mouthfeel is okay, nothing special. Drinkability is alright, but I would much rather have a Sam Adam's Black Lager.

This beer smells very sweet and light. The color is a very dark color with a very white head for such a dark beer. The taste is very light with a very dark finish. The taste is very malty and very little hops. It is very sweet with not alot of bitterness that reminds me of the orignal St. Pauli's Girl, but with a heavier malty flavor. Good feel in the mouth and very drinkable beacuse of how light it tastes.

this is a dark colored pilsner in my opinion, dark w/ a slight white head; hoppy w/ very faint malt aroma; crisp light taste the hops come through ,slightly malty, just a faint bit watery tho, with it's light body & dryness i believe this beer is quite drinkable.

Poured a clear, deep copper/ruby red color with a nice, very light-tan head. Nose was light malt, some caramel, and a bit of skunkiness--cursed green bottles. Fairly clean. Light-to-medium body. Not much malt. Some caramel but not a lot. Hops were there--fairly mild but still relatively bitter with the small malt profile. Mouthfeel was average. Drinkability I called average too, though I could be convinced that it should be a bit higher.

Not bad but I would not buy it again. Unfortunately I've not had great success finding dunkles around. This one is passable but not among the better examples. Still, there's nothing terribly wrong with it and I'm glad I gave it a try. The malt does come out a bit as it warms, so don't drink it too cold.

Pours out dark with very little white to off-white suds.
No lacing.
Smell is very faint. Needs some kick to the aroma. Very slight caramel coffee and not much else.
Taste is a little better than the light (not Light). Very slight hop flavors with a little caramel/roasted malts (almost burnt).
Mouthfeel is alright, but just too clean for a dark beer. Needs more flavors or stronger flavors.
No need to session this unless you have a keg of it and need to get rid of it before you take it back.

Appearance- Pours a dark and moody amber with a robust khaki hued froth. With minimal leftover carbonation layered on my glass.
Scent- Deep earthy malts upon opening the bottle. Followed by some traces of caramel and chocolate overtones that... where soon overwhelmed by the overbearing and distinct smell of le skunk.
Taste- A bit sweet at the onset. Minimal caramel and chocolate flavors in the middle. followed up by a bit of roasted hops and light malt.
Mouthfeel- Light to medium carbonation with a dry aftertaste at the finish.
Drinkability- Not as complex as I am accustomed too, but would be an easy fit for the "common" man looking to extend his palette with a dark Euro lager.

Smells of dark chocolate and hops. Pours to a translucent very dark brown but slightly bronze. Nice micro bubble head, slightly off-white. Taste is sweet and malty with a nice semi-sweet hopped finish. Carbonation seems high but doesn't overshadow the bitter finish. Not a whole lot different than most qualities of regular st. pauli girl, just a more roasted backgound. This is a good no nonsense beer that can be dranken all day long. Went real good with my pot roast the other night. Oh by the way check out the "new" st. pauli "girl". She's hot!

Bottled on January 23, 2007... this has a drink by date of 01.2008.

Served in an English pint glass at just over fridge temperature.

Appearance- Pours a thin, watery, brownish ruby color that forms a bone white two-finger crown. As the beer settles it leaves behind some moderate lacing and a very thin mat across the top.

Smell- Chocolate and some roasted malts sing just above the clean, traditional German hops. As the beer comes to temperature, the nose gets sweeter and more full.

Taste- The clean, bitter hops come through even before the influence of the coffee-like, richer malt profile. The long, distinctive finish would work better without the roasted elements here.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Activity that borders on boistrous... it's prickly at first but quickly relaxes without losing its fervor. Great choice for traditional German meals that incorporate a richer palette of ingredients and flavors... a quick and easy choice regarding its availability and price.

In a bottle at an area watering hole. Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a walnut brown color and is clear but nearly opaque. Small white head is gone fast leaving a beverage the looks like Coke.

The smell is faint and unremarkable.

The taste is dominated by bitter hops. Very little malt and no sweetness.

Mouth feel is clean and thin. Not much body

Drinkable but not great. There are much better darks out there to be had.
