Very dark brown in color with a creamy, dark tan, two-finger head. The aroma is really intriguing -- like hazelnuts roasted over an open fire. The body of the beer is lighter than I had expected, with something of an oily feel to it. The flavor is actually oily too-- makes me think of fried hazelnut skins. Silky smooth with an appreciable roasty bitterness toward the finish. Smoky and roasted flavors dominate, though the nuttiness is not without a certain sweetness -- nothing close to what one finds in Rogue's entry in this category, however.

Cask conditioned version is much the same though with a somewhat more pronounced sweetness and a slightly bready yeast character.

This beer is a deep brown color, it is slightly hazy and in the light shows a deep ruby note to it. The head is a frothy light brown color. The nose is light with notes of caramel and perhaps a hint of nuttiness. The taste is fairly dry up front, but then moves to a note of buttery oak. Quite light on the palate. While a bit dry, there is a definite caramel sweetness here. I also get a hint of chocolate. The finish of this beer is the most notable part, actually a bit rich, creamy, with notes of woody tannins, buttery oak and a definite note of hazelnut that comes to linger and dominate the finish.

Draught @ Papago: This one is a reddish-brown color. It had a bit of an off-white head. The aroma was quite nutty, with the predominate aroma that of almonds. Medium malt body, but not overly sweet. Taste of almonds also, with some bitterness in the finish. Very Good!

Wow, this blows Rogue Hazelnut away. A pleasent slightly nutty aroma but huge hazelnut flavor. Pretty dark for a nut brown, but so is Papago's Maduro Nut brown which apparantly is the base recipe for this beer. Malt sweetness and hop bitterness are pretty well balanced with a tilt towards malt sweetness. The hazelnut flavor is big. Wish they bottled this beer.

Sampled on tap at Papago.

This dark ale poured a dark, chestnut/ruby color with creamy, tan foam that settled but coated the glass nicely. The smell was mild hazelnut and malt. The taste was slightly sweet with flavors of mild hazelnut, lightly roasted caramel malt. Overall a nutty flavor. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with low bitterness. The body was medium, and the carbonation feel was low. This was a very nice and easy to drink dark ale.

An almost opaque brown/black brew with a light tan head. Head retention is good. Massive hazelnut with some sweet maltiness in the aroma. Extremely fresh. Massive hazelnut in the flavor too. Malt dominates this one, but subtle hop character adds a crispness that this beer wouldn't hold up without. A good mix of sweetness and dryness. I didn't expect this to be a perfect pairing with the pizza I ate with it, but it worked pretty well. Great beer, I was impressed by the freshness. A must-try for visitors to Papago. I can't wait to try their other brews.

The beer as it resides in the glass a deep brown, head impressive in size, frothy in texture, and the left over lace a thick glutinous sheet to smother the glass. Lots of malt to start, nutty sweet, crisp and fresh with hint of the hops, front ambrosial, top middling in its feel to the palate. Finish wickedly hopped, delightfully acidic, droughty long lasting aftertaste, and one find “Brown Ale”, another winner from “Papago”, eat your hearts out as it’s “Draught Only”.
