Interesting that the base beer is a dubbel because this tastes like it's much more in stout territory. Flavor is mostly coffee and then cocoa. The whiskey barrel is mostly noted by a touch of alcohol in the finish and a pleasant oakiness throughout. Peppers aren't very noted other than a mild smokiness. An interesting mix of flavors, but overall the coffee dominates a little much for me to rare higher, especially with all the other interesting ingredients that are in the mix. I would also like to try the base beer for comparison, because I didn't get much dubbel from this one. Worth checking out.

32oz counter pressure filled growler from Barrel and Barley (Woodstock, GA). 14.99. Served in a Barrel and Barley teku.
Pours a murky chesnut mahogany with a finger and a half biege head. The froth mellows to a halo that leaves small clumps of lace.
Aromas if muted whisky, coffee and malt sugars. Not what I expect from a dubbel.
Significantly more going on in the flavor than in the nose. A good bit of coffee throughout with whiskey-tinged oak, soft vanilla, cocoa, dark fruit jam, toast and sugar cane. Next to no apparent alcohol and only slightly more yeast esters. Tasty for sure but again not what I expect feom a dubbel.
The body is on the lighter side of medium with moderate carbonation. Coffee, bitter bakers cocoa and a hint of whiskey in the finish.
Biere Joi is a flavorful and enjoyable brew but I'm torn on how to rate it. In the rare instance that I'm in the mood for a dubbel this just wouldn't hack it. Coffee, whiskey and cocoa abound but relatively little dark fruit and almost no yeast character. Despite the variance from style this is a beer worth trying.

Appearance: A bit darker than a dubbel should be, but I'll let it slide for the BA process and adjuncts.'
Aroma: Adjunct forward coffee, cacao and peppers all fight valiantly to be dominant. Vanilla/whiskey notes in the background as well. Any yeast esters are covered, which is a bit of a bummer, but a great aroma nonetheless.
Flavor: Coffee/cocoa up front, finishes with a sweet oaky bourbon and vanilla character, and as it sits on the palate it heats up with the peppers.
Mouthfeel: A touch thinner than it should be, could use a bit of fresh beer to fill it up a bit after aging.

Poured into snifter from 650ml
A: mid-brown color with ruby highlights. Very little head
S: smell is lead by coffee grounds and cocoa and medium amount of oaky bourbon wood
T: slight bitterness of the coffee grounds, a good peppery note from the peppers but not overpowering. Good barrel presence on the back end. It's almost like its hidden there until the end. Although it doesn't say it was aged in bourbon barrels, you get a hint of bourbon. Modest malt feel with unnoticeable hop presence.
M: medium-bodied slick mouthfeel. Would've liked a little more texture here but this is a dubbel and not a stout. Alcohol is buried nicely. Spiciness is definitely present.
O: interesting take on this beer; barrel-aging a dubbel. I liked the blend of the flavors. Would definitely drink again
