Went back. Way better recently. British. Their draft and bottle list was pretty comprehensive. and had a lot of local and nat'l beers. The older waitress we had was very nice and accomidating. But the bartender was just really understaffed. The place is a good bfast place with good beer list. Wish they had some cask though. Next time.

At a recommendation from Chip Walton of Chop & Brew and Brewing TV fame, we headed right from the airport to get lunch at the Piper's Pub. This was a little old fashioned pub, filled with soccer fans eagerly watching "football" and putting back full British sized pints of beer. The bar area is small and somewhat loud, but gives a better view of the taps than the 1950's era restaurant seating in the back. They always have at least two cask beers (I had Duck Rabbit Milk Stout) and a very good selection of local and British ales. Lots of traditional English, Irish, Scottish fare are present in the menu and we both ended up with the tasty and incredibly mouth-scorchingly hot lamb stew. A nice way to ease into the beer culture of Pennsylvania!

As you may have heard, this is a premier spot for futbol viewing in the city, which helps to make it a very English style pub. Lots of different beers available. 20 taps at least, from what my memory tells me. Service is attentive and mature. Huge bourbon selection here also, from what I saw.

I hate the Southside (mostly during the weekend insanity), but this is a very good reason to make the trek down, despite the neighborhood being a real hassle sometimes. Not too far away from Fathead's if you want to make the two-fer.

Very friendly staff with a great whiskey/local beer selection. Had dinner last night and was blown away by the food. Amazing! A great place to sit down and have a few pints without dealing with the 21-25 year old southside hooligans. Price is a little higher but reasonable when looking at the beer selections and they come in 20oz. glasses.

Stopped by for the first time yesterday. It definitely won't be my last visit here...

As others have noted, Piper's pub is something of a English/Irish style pub, with 4 large screen TV's (that I saw), apparently playing almost non-stop English soccer (the bartender mentioned that on occasion they'll show soccer games from the rest of Europe and S. America, but for the most part, English league soccer is what's going to be on the telee here). Otherwise, the place has high ceilings in the bar area up front, but with a fair size dining room in the back as well. If one is into soccer (which I enjoy, but I'm not nearly as crazy about it as most of the crowd on this Saturday afternoon), this is a great place to hang out, shoot the breeze with your mates, and just enjoy the day. The vibe is very friendly and laid back here, and the bartender was quick and likewise pretty friendly. So I thought this a great place to hang out with a beer or three.

As for the beer selection, they had roughly 35 offerrings, including two beers on cask from Flying Dog and Slyfox (the pearl necklace oyster stout and a pale ale). Of course Piper's pub has all the usual euro macros (guinness, bass, belhaven, etc.), but they also had a very nice selection of craft beer as well (mostly PA stuff, but also SN celebration, Stone IPA, Bells cream stout and 2 hearted, some flying dog and heavy seas stuff). I think they had at least 5 or 6 IPA's, and as that's what I was in the mood for (got a pint of headhunter and a glass of 2 hearted), I was quite happy. Given the quality of the tap list, I didn't ask about bottles, though I did see some folks down by the end of the bar with a couple bottles of macro swill.

Didn't try the food, but what I saw looked pretty good. I'll definitely order something from the kitchen next time I stop by (I suspect stopping in is going to become a habit for me). Prices were OK. Almost everything on tap was $5.75 a glass. In most cases that was for an imperial pint, but some beers (like the headhunter I ordered) came in a 16 ounce glass. Considering that the pub is located in the heart of Carson St. (within easy walking distance of Smokin Joe's and Fatheads), the prices here didn't seem too bad (though I should add that the $5.75 price does not include tax, which is added on when you get your bill).

One other thing here that I appreciated (especially after stopping by Smokin Joe's afterwards), is that the draft list on the bar was up to date. Unlike the menu at Smokin Joe's (which was completely out of date - close to half the beers listed were long gone), everything on the tap list menu was actually available. So extra marks for that as well. (if only the same were true with the online draft list. Today is 2/19/13, but the online draft list is from 1/27/13!)

Really enjoyed my time here...

Edit from 1/4/12. Stoppped in this past Saturday. Beer selection was as good as ever (they had sculpin today, as well as SN celebration on cask - had never seen that before), and this time I ordered the lamb and chestnut shepard's pie. The latter was pretty tasty, and I'm encouraged to see what else the kitchen can do. They even had college and NFL football on the TV. There's no doubt I'll soon be back.

Well Fat Head's sucked, so we came to this place. It's a relatively small place, a British pub knock-off, featuring Brit cuisine, cask ale, and a diverse beer list that leans towards more mild and sessionable beers, but still has lots of other stuff to offer. There is a smallish but comfy bar, and a fairly small dining area, simple decor, and a couple TVs for you sports fans.

The beer selection really dragged me to this place. While it's not the hugest selection in the world (or even on the street), they had lots of local options from places I'd didn't see anywhere else in the city, with a collection from Rivertowne, Lavery, and even a couple East End brews that weren't even on at their brewery. So extra points for that. Having four casks is a good option, and many of the beers, as I said, were British in nature, with still enough selections overall to keep everyone happy.

There were a lot of good food options, and I had to throw around a few options before settling on the toad in the hole, similar to my wife's bangers n mash, both of which were very tasty and in great portions. Prices were decent all around, though some of the entrees were a bit on the pricey side.

The bartender was great, and never kept us waiting for anything. He was busy so we didn't get to chat, but from his recommendations to other nearby patrons, it seemed his beer scene knowledge was pretty spot on.

The Carson Street area kind of really sucked crowd-wise, but at least the bars were ample, and in the unlikely case I ever find myself back there, Piper's is most likely where I'll be.

Wow i love this place. The place is always very clean, well lighted and loaded with tv's, usually playing football, both nfl and soccer. Great selction of craft beers on tap, around 12-15 and plenty of bottles. The bartenders have always been great, really friendly, down to earth and will suggest a beer for you. The prices of tabs are right on with everyone else, and some beers are 16-20 oz pours! What really makes this place great is the food! This is usually my last stop in south side cause this is were i eat my sober up lunch/dinner. Food is always top notch, fresh and plenty of amount for your dollar. Anytime im in south side, i stop here without even checking the tab list. Love it, for sure stop in for a beer and a bite to eat.

This is not only a great place to find some good and interesting beers on tab but one of the best places in the US to watch Football (soccer). I have been to Pitt twice in the last six months and both times made sure I spent time here.

I went to watch the football but loved the beer. Each time they had 2 very interesting beers for the cask and a good selection of beer on draft. The selection is reasonably priced and varied.

This is a bar during the day time for footy fans. It is open early with lots of people there for the games. It is a Scottish pub .

I have had breakfast there twice everything my family and I ate was excellent. I had the lamb shepherds pie ... Wow. My wife loved the bread pudding. Food is reasonably priced

I have visited Piper's quite a few times for drinks and occiasionally food.

Piper's pub is a thin place, with the bar on the left when you walk in and seating in the back.

20 oz Imperial Pints for 5.37 including tax. Pretty good price if you ask me.

About 20 taps and a cask at all times. Extensive bottle selection. All of this can be found on the website. The cask is always well-cared for, and normally it is something hard to find and tasty. The taps include beers of both typical and more interesting varities. There is almost always something from East End on-tap, which I love. There is also a huge selection of whiskey.

The service is pretty friendly and prompt. Even when the place is packed, I have never waited too long for a beer.

The vibe that Piper's is going for is a UK/Irish pub-type feel. If you come in during a soccer (football) match, the place will be packed.

The food is Irish pub food, and it is done pretty well. I like the Reuben.

Overall, I really like Piper's, and for the area it has the best prices. Definitely worth a stop.

A great time overall, we arrived around 10:30pm on a Saturday night. The bar was totally crowded, almost impossible to even pass through let alone find a place to stand. And it was really noisy but I could see they had a reasonable selection of some great beers (check out their website for the current beer list).

I noticed that the back dining area was only about 20% capacity so I thought I'd see what it took to get a table. "Dining only until 11pm" I was told by the hostess. I told her we'd already eaten but would be getting desserts and appetizers along with some beers and she gave in and got us a table for 6.

The menu is very interesting and rather modest-priced with traditional UK-style menu items, some rather interesting and traditional and not found easily elsewhere. My shortbread ice-cream dessert was fantastic, the shortbread was the traditional harder Brit style and very enjoyable. The cheese and breads appetizer was great, with some interesting looking cheeses.

The on-tap beer selection had a good 2 dozen offerings that were all interesting and some are difficult to find even in the more wide-offering bars in most cities.

The server was very friendly and helpful, and drinks and various foods were brought rather quickly.

The bar was so noisy that it carried even back into the dining area, one negative point. But it was offset by the great vintage ambience and traditional shaped-plaster ceiling and decor which were early 20th century at latest, and worth preserving. I was glad they hadn't been ruined by sound-decreasing drop-down ceilings so the noise was a trade-off. Think of it as "traditional ambience" ha ha.

Overall, a great experience and we hope to be back soon.

Reminds me of a quaint Irish or British style pub. Football matches playing on the big screens, nice wood bar.

The beer is mostly English Style beers with some craft brews as well. There are approximately 25 taps and they do have a decent bottle beer selection as well. They do have some macro's as well. One of the things this bar specializes in is Scotch. Not being a Scotch drinker, I can't really speak knowledgably about it, but it is quite extensive.

The food here is really good. While I do enjoy coming in and trying some of their beers, the food is what I enjoy the most.

This is a wonder little place on the Southside. There is not a huge college crowd in here normally. Great food, a respectable beer selection, tons of scotch!

Piper's usually gets overlooked, for both being an Irish pub in a college bar neighborhood, and being across the street from Fat Head's...but this place is legit.

Used to frequent here alot in college on Thursdays and happy hour bar crawls. Only recently had I begun to gain a better appreciation for what it really is.

The beer selection is quite good, little specks of all different styles and lots of English/Irish choices. They also serve solid American micros and always have something good on cask. Tons of scotch and Irish whiskey as well.

The food, as far as Irish cuisine goes is unmatched in the area. So many outstanding choices, and always incredible lunch and dinner daily specials.

My major beef with the place though, is that more than half the place is set aside for tables for dining customers. This makes the bar area quite small (and NARROW), it isnt a place you want to go with a large group of people and have a good comfortable time. They usually open up the seating to bar customers after 11, but by that time the crowd is already dying down a bit.

The service is great, even when its bad. Last visit I ordered a Smuttynose Porter, and was given the draught Root Beer instead, though it was delicious my order was promptly corrected. Later on, my girlfriend had ordered an Anderson Valley Winter Solstice, and it was quite sour/bad. The bartender promptly replaced her drink without questioning. They do pour the best pint of Guiness in the city, complete with shamrock imprint in the head.

Always worth a walk past, and a visit assuming you can get in and find a spot to stand.

Stopped in here last weekend when Fathead's was on an hour wait and we were hungry now. Glad we did.

The front of the pub has a typical Irish Pub type of feel with a long, dark wood bar and some tables behind, with soccer on every TV. The back is a rather brightly lit dining room with three more TVs showing yet more soccer. Lots of patrons rooting on their squads made the atmosphere quite lively.

Most beer is of the InBev/Diageo variety with a nice smattering of craft beers. I enjoyed a Big Hoppy Monster on this visit. Other good craft choices included Old Chub, East End Big Hop and Smutty IPA.

Food was far beyond expectations for this type of place. All ingredients were fresh, well seasoned, tasty and promptly served. We'd go back anytime.

Jan. 8 ,2009 - Since this is my first trip to Pittsburgh I'm scouting out different places to sample the local ambience. Having lunched and tasted some brews we departed the saloon and looked across the street to see another establishment call Piper's Pub. Could that mean bag pipers? Well upon entering we see a pleasantly ornate bar and were immediately greeted by some friendly people. The bartender knew about every one of the beers on tap and in fact could blend them to make some interesting concoctions. Yes, I could almost hear the pipes while sipping the Belhaven Scottish Ale. All kinds of Lagers, Ales and Stouts are present and at a reasonable price, especially the Choklat Stout. The number and selection of cask beers will be a welcoming sight to the discerning beer drinker ready to enjoy brews as they do on the other side of the "pond".

The wife and I checked out Piper's last night, a cold and dreary evening, and the place was exactly what we were looking for. It was pretty empty throughout our visit; music was kept pretty low; there were four or five tvs on ESPN and VS. but the sound was down. Really, the only sound you heard was from the gregarious bartender and the other patrons. That, to me, is the true sound of a good pub.

Piper's has about 20 taps, mostly dedicated to UK imports, with a few other domestics, micros and imports in the mix. My wife had an well-poured Guinness and I started with an Old Speckled Hen on a nitro-pour.

The food menu includes many typical pub items, as well as a section of just UK type foodstuffs. My wife had the Chicken Shepherd's pie, and I opted for the traditional beef shepherd's pie. Both were preceded by a simple, but very fresh, house salad. The pies arrived nuclear reactor hot and smelling very, very good. Rather than the traditional browned mashed potato crust, these featured half-smashed potatoes with some nice big chunks of skin-on redskin potatoes in the "crust," which added a nice element of texture. I oredered a draft Fuller's ESB (sweet!) to go with the pie. Both pies were enormous and, when you factor in the salad, were incredible values for $13.95. Even though we both absolutely loved them, we had lots left to take away.

One of the real draws of Piper's, at least to me, is their enormous scotch selection. They list about 80 or so, and the menu says that's only a portion of what they have in stock, but that shelf space limits what they can offer at any one time. I wonder how frequently the displayed items change...Anyway, being a fan of single cask malts, I went with a Tamdhu 10-year Speyside malt which was served in a proper Glencairn tasting glass, with a small bottle of spring water on the side (which I didn't have to ask for- nice touch.) The menu listed it at $21, but it was only $16 on the check, so I'm not sure about the discrepancy.

Overall, we spent a very relaxing couple hours in this very charming pub. I'd love to get back to watch some EPL soccer on one of their big screens and see what kind of a crowd they draw for that. My wife said that if we didn't have kids, and lived closer, Piper's was the kind of place we'd be pretty serious regulars in; that, I think, sums it up best.

just down the hill from my parents place, this is a cool little pub(aside from the no smoking policy). a nice tap list, though this is an east end destination for me they do have a nice long list. I couldn't tell you about the food but i hear it's excellent. the staff is most friendily, will let you sample the whole list to find your fancy, and if your pint is 3/4 gone they are there to ask if you want another. good for more than just a carson street crawl stop, go in and stay a while, it's a cool bar.

Addition to the review. I just was back in the Burgh to visit the family and DID have some of the food. It's phenomenal. they make a little something from ALL of the countries of the British Isles, and I do mean all. had some scotch eggs, that were to die for, and some welsh "sausage" that was veggie friendly (my sister who is on the "hip" vegetarian trip was with us) and I couldn't believe how tasty they were, makes me want to look further into the culinary prowess of the other part of my heritage(welsh that is). and it all was more than reasonable price wise. if your in the Burgh, DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!!! make sure you eat here at least once.

Another spot I checked out while in Pittsburgh.

Atmosphere was nice. Mellow, with a pub like feel to it. Decent crowd, but not so crowded that it was hard to get a beer.

Quality was good. A few macros, but a bunch of good stuff too.

Service was very good. We sat away from the bar, and were still served at our table, we didn't have to go to the bar to get another beer. And the help was prompt as well.

Selection was nice and varied. Lots of countries represented, especially Euros. There were about 30 different taps.

Didn't try any food.

Value was pretty good. Once again, I noticed that most brews were a bit more expensive that they tend to be here in California, but I didn't feel like it was too overpriced.

Worth a visit.

My wife and I visited Piper's Pub on our first of three stops on Carson Street in Pittsburgh.

Atmosphere is definitely a British pub feel. Long bar with about 15 stools and four bar tables with highback seats decorate the main pub area. Two big screen televisions were broadcasting football games. Some nice woodworking and wainscoting. The back dining area looked a little more like a typical family restaurant than a British pub. It wasn't packed, but the layout made it seem a bit cramped. Music was light and in the background.

We perused the menu, which was largely standard pub grub, sandwiches, salads and some entrees. We decided on the Ploughman's platter, which included two big chunks of bread, Guinness cheddar and sage darby cheeses, sweet chutney spread, gherkins and apple slices. Even though this was only an appetizer, we were both full after sharing this, so we felt this was very reasonable at $8.95.

The service was friendly enough. We didn't really ask any questions about the menu or beer. Beer menus were on the tables in plain sight. They also had seperate bottle menu with scotch and wine selections as well.

Selection wasn't too bad. Very heavy on imported beers, including Bass, Fuller's, Boddingtons, Newcastle, Guinness, Smithwicks, Harp, Bellhaven, Franzi, Pilsner Urquell, Hoegaarden, Stella and Frambroise Lambic. The only craft brews they had were Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Troegenator, Wells Banana Bread (which my wife loved), East End Big Hop and Peak Organic Pale Ale.

Overall, the food was my favorite part of our visit. I found the beer selection to be a bit lacking, especially to the other two places we visited (Fat Head's and Smokin' Joes). If you want imports, though, check this place out.

Stopped here while in the Burgh for my birthday with WVbeergeek and LeftyBWS after stopping at Fatheads and Smokin Joes.
Came here to try the Shepherds Pie and it did not dissapoint was a bit pricey,but not bad for the size of the portion,even brought some home to eat later.
The place was very clean,neat, did look like and Irish style pub,had a bar about half the length of the place with brass rails on the tops and bottoms of the bar looked very good.
Had a lot of English stlye beers and lots of nitro beers. I just had a nitro Young's Chocolate Stout.
Would definatly stop here again everything on the menu looked very good,would like to try something different next time if I could resist the Shepherds pie. Would also like to check out more beers there. It was are last stop of the day and we were ready to go after we ate.

Nice place! The shepard's pie is excellent enough that I'd come here again just for that, and the menu looked good enough that there are even more reasons to come back. Service was excellent, very attentive and knowledgable. Add the beer and scotch selection to the food menu, and that's how I rated it so high. If you want an import, especially for a scotch ale, this is the place to come. I am definitely returning. The only down side I can think of is that its atmosphere seems more like a nuvo restaurant instead of a Scottish pub.

Had the scotch eggs and shepards pie April 26th, 2008. Fantastic! It was great and the service was wonderful as always.

Stopped into to Pipers while doing a little bar crawl with my buddy. A nice clean atmosphere with a neighborhood feel. Large tap selection featuring English/Scottish brews. Had a belhaven ipa that was incredible. The bartender was knowledgeable and quick with a sample taste.

We ate a few appetizers with the Red pepper artichoke dip being the standout. It blows away Smoking Joes artichoke dip, fyi.

This is a great spot for dinner and good hard to find english ales. Stop in if Fatheads is too packed and to loud, you won't be disappointed.

Located on the south side of Pittsburgh-across the street from Fatheads-between Wendy's and Pirmanti's. This little pub has plenty of seating for dining and a nice menu. Menu items that are both common and from the British Isles. Decent draft selection featuring plenty of imported beers from England, Scotland, and Ireland. Some of the beers are rare to find on draft but almost all of them are common imports that are pretty easy to find. Its a great stop for an "Across the Pond" pub feel and it was great to sample some British beers on-tap.

Stopped by this hidden gem after finding Fathead's far too crowded to even get a seat at the bar. Fortune smiled on me that day. Walk in to a nice long bar. Lighting was just a hair lower than I thought it would be, lending a nice intimate feel. There's a big mirror behind the bar. Wood everywhere makes it feel warm. Music was low and did not impede conversation at all. I counted (though I could be wrong) 27 taps with a selection heavily weighted towards English beers. Glassware selection was great and everything was clean as could be. The barkeep was friendly and seemed to have a good knowledge of the products. He asked me what sort of beers I liked and made a spot-on suggestion. "Witty banter" comes to mind. Nice to see the East End Big Hop on tap here, gotta give love to the local scene. Samples were quick to be offered and discussed. Didn't try the food. Just had lunch, so maybe next time.
One thing that really caught my eye was (yes I know this is BEER Advocate.com, but bear with me) the incredible selection of Scotch. I don't know if Lew has been here, but if Scotch and Whiskey are anything alike, he would probably find something to tickle his fancy.

All in all, this is a great little place to have a pint, they really do a great job of making this place feel like an English pub.

Very highly recommended.

Your walking into an authentic pub folks not a knockoff, this place is completely legitimate. Don't believe me try the Shepard's Pie, it's mindblowingly delicious you will be licking your plate. A slew of drafts offering classic UK offerings, with some micros and imported Belgian specialties on occasion great place to drink on St. Paddy's Day. Servers are all very professional yet friendly and personable at the same time, that can be hard to pull off they do it pretty nicely. Almost right across from Fathead's and a couple blocks from Smokin' Joe's definite must visit threesome in East Carson St. Usually some live music going on as well great lively atmosphere with awesome food this is the whole package, a true pub. Oh and on the weekends they show Rugby and Soccer games, for those in tune with that scene.


Drew and company have continued to do what works since I wrote that initial review in 04. In addition, the cask room has been created with other adventurous projects in the works. I stopped by a couple weeks back, to see what was on cask. When I got there and saw Drew, I had to ask if my pal Chad and I could check it out. This system was done right, there's no other cask system like this pouring in the Burgh right now, in fact you may have to go to NYC to get anything close to the quality of cask that this place has been producing. I've been there multiple times in the last year, and each visit has brought excitement through beers that I had either passed over or never had on cask. Duck Rabbit Milk Stout, Firehouse Red from North Country, Black Strap to name of few were all excellent, and for me light years better in quality than the standard carbonated fare we are all accustomed to. I've seen a trend in more craft offerings being available here, still has a great mix of imports and Single Malts but I've seen alot of Terrapin, Victory, Troeg's, Erie, East End, and Duck Rabbit in the last year. A great move for the beer as a whole in addition to the kick ass cask conditioning going down. I've respected the fact that these casks have been provided by a handful of brewers, but I'm excited to see what other possibilities arise for this system as Drew makes friends with other micros wanting to send the Burgh some real ale. This review was not CAMRA approved just the thoughts and ramblings of the WVbeergeek.

By the way, checkout the lamb and chestnut Shepard's Pie if you haven't already. Oh, and the next big project is coming soon, Pittsburgh's first authentic Fish and Chips shop right next door to Piper's Pub. This place has earned it's identity as a member of the Holy Trinity of beer in the Southside along with Fathead's and Smokin' Joe's. A staple for me every time I carouse around in the Southside.

Piper's Pub is one of the three bars that make up the legendary South Side pub crawl. Piper's is on the opposite side of the street and on the same block from Fat Heads. Pipers tries to be a part Irish and part English pub. It achieves these goals with out becoming super tacky. The bar has about twenty taps, with all but two of them coming from Europe. The selections include Strongbow, Guinness, Harp, Bass, Old Specked Hen, and many others. The two non-European selections include a selection from Sierra Nevada (I have seen pale ale and the IPA before) and Labatt Blue Light. The bottle selection is very nice as well they have the complete Sammy Smith line, and other bottles from Europe. Just ask for the bottle menu.

The bar itself specializes in showing English sports such as soccer and rugby. It attracts crowds that enjoy those sports. The service is very good, on our last trip we met the owner, and he is very knowledgeable about English and Irish beer. They also have a menu that specializes in items from those countries, and the food is good.
