Porterhouse Red is brewed using a well chosen mixture of malts and hops. It is a complex ale with a subtle flavor that does not overload the tastebuds and a nice smooth finish. Bottle conditioned, unpasteurized.
Grain: Pale Malt, Crystal Malt, Wheat Malt, Chocolate Malt.
Hops: Galena, Nugget, East Kent Golding.

Aroma: almost an irish whiskey nose at first, something a little odd going on, malt and a little odd fruit or spice – the fruit almost has an old or almost rotten, almost garbagey smell to it, not much hop, malt and esters. Appearance: Rich rocky head, cream colored, multi-sized bubbles, excellent lacing, brownish white head, brilliant red brown, cathedral window lacing, leaves shelves of foam and ledges of lace: Flavor: Slight sweetness at the start and then a dry finish with a little hop that lingers into the after taste, a little roast in the background and some caramel – more flavor comes out as it warms – more caramel, malt and almost a touch of chocolate. Mouthfeel: very creamy and dry, smooth, medium-low carbonation, no astringency. Overall Impression: The odd initial aroma goes away and results in a very drinkable beer – it could use a little more malt but is easy drinking with initial sweetness that finishes dry. Balanced to the malt but it has a little hop accent.

I tried a pint of this beer off the tapper at the brewery pub in Dublin. It poured a clear amber with white head that left a fine lace. The scent had subtle sweet malt notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with sweet malt base and the subtle hop finish. The mouthfeel was medium in body but with good carbonation. Overall it was a great beer.

Nitro tap at Fraunces Tavern, NYC.
L: Clear, Red/amber colour with one finger of cream head that leaves many rings of lacing. Gotta love the nitro!
S: Light malt.
T: Delicate caramel with some smoky bitterness in the finish.
F: Light body and a soft mouthfeel.
O: A very easy-drinking Irish red ale.

Poured from an 11.2-ounce bottle into a Boddington's Pub Ale Willi Becher glass. This is my first non-Guinness Irish beer, and it is a dandy. Cola colored pour, with a couple of fingers of off-white head that left some nice sticky lacing. Amazingly complex aromas and flavors. Loads of molasses and licorice up front, with undertones of tart apple and citrus. Nice astringent and hoppy bitterness in the middle, with a little char on the finish and a hint of lingering tartness on the palate. Brewed with Pale, Crystal, Wheat, and Chocolate malts; hopped with Galena, Nugget, and East Kent Golding. My only complaint is the ring-top cap, which I finally pried off by starting with a chopstick and finishing with an oven mitt. YMMV. Sláinte!

Keg halfpint at Mulligan’s, Dublin, as The Porterhouse Nitro Red Irish Ale. ABV is 4.2%. Deep reddish brown colour, creamy off-white to beige head. Moderate malty aroma. Medium roast malts in the fairly dry flavour, some bittering hops.

It has a dark copper body with a tiny off-white head and a small amount of lacing.
The aroma has roasted malts, caramel, plum and chocolate.
The taste has roasted malts, caramel, coffee and earthy hops, with a bitter finish. Medium bodied, creamy and dry.
A very pleasant red ale.

On nitro tap at the brewery. Copper color with dense tan head. Smells of caramel. Light body and smooth feel. Toasted malt and caramel flavors. Very nice!

Bottled and possibly bottle conditioned bought from the Microbar in the Arndale, Manchester
Pours a clear rusty red body with decent off white head
Arms is barley sugar
Malty, very slightly sour then very slightly sweet then very slightly creamy
It’s a traditional Irish red, great at what it is but is what it is great?
