Super dark and light in carbonation. Smell is dark fruits and a bit of booze. Taste is prunes, toffee, and licorice. Rich and sweet with a bittersweet finish and a bit smoke rounds out the flavor.

The aroma is a distinctive oxidized note with an herbal twang. Beautiful foam and coppery amber brew in the Belgian chalice. Prickly carbonation in the mouth. Medium body.

As this warms, there is some bitter and herbal hop flavor that doesn't really add to the rusty, smoky malt. An unusual, even peculiar version of the Scottish Ale category. I think you could argue that this is an American Strong Ale that happens to have some peat in the mix. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham, Washington for the decent price of $5.59.

22oz bottle served in a curved glass. Beer pours cola brown, with an ample tan head. For a beer that advertises dry hopping in the subtitle, the aroma is pretty uninspiring. Flavor has a strong, burned caramel, butterscotch, and bitter hop flavor. Fairly reminiscent of a chalky scotch ale with its smooth flavor up front, followed by harsher, even astringent, flavors in the finish. My guess is that some fans of Scottish Ales (strong ones, anyway) will really love this, but for me it's just ok.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a tulip.

Appearance: deep, rich red-brown hue with no haze and a persistent finger of tan foam leaving a nice lace on the glass. I quite like it.

Smell: rich, sweet caramel maltiness with a big dose of toffee and a little bit of toast and biscuit. For me, the candy sweetness helps offset the drier biscuity aromas.

Taste: lightly sweet maltiness with a nice caramel character and only a dash of toastiness. It's much milder than I would have guessed from the aroma. There's not much here in the way of hops, but I think it's a very competent Scottish ale.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess. Not bad.

Overall: this is not a bad beer at all. The dry hops don't really come through, but they have a lot to stand up to with the maltiness of this brew. Whether or not it satisfied the brewers' ideas, this is a nicely crafted and drinkable brew.

Great brew! Give it a try. Dry hop adds an interesting balance to the nice molasses and burnt sugar flavors. Nice punch at 8.2 abv but still very drinkable.
