Wifey picked up a 750 ml bottle of this for me listed at $11.95 CDN. Enjoyed over an evening into a pint glass.

Appearance - Dark, coppery brown with reddish hues, that is very clear to the eye. Many bubbles rise to the 1+ finger of tan head at the surface of the bee, unfortunately the head disappears quickly, only leaving a thin layer of soapy residue.

Smell - Floral, hoppy, with some striking mild sweetness, perhaps from tropical fruits?

Taste - Mild, some sugary sweetness, but also light bitterness from the hop presence in the beer. An unusual mild chocolate on the back end. More regular grassiness as well, and the booziness in this 7% package is more noticeable after a few sips.

Mouthfeel - Smooth rich with moderate carbonation and slightly dry finish.

Overall - Nice beer, worth a try and a solid Vienna Lager, but not outstanding nor is it worth the price tage in m opinion. Still cool to try since Johnny Bower is the NHL alumni on this beer (he turns 90 this year).

750 mL bottle picked up at the LCBO; served well-chilled. The price tag made me balk at first, but I suppose it's not much more overpriced than this brewery's rotating seasonal lineup once you account for the fact that part of the money is for a charitable cause.

Pours a deep, clear ruby-amber colour, generating one finger of frothy light tan-coloured head. It dissipates slowly, smearing the glass with a fine coat of lacing, eventually settling into a dense, creamy cap and collar. Looks great to me. Decent aroma that unsurprisingly leans toward the malt side - caramel, toasted nuts and bread are all apparent, with a light touch of earthiness. Not bad, but nothing special.

Nice flavour, with an enjoyable mixture of toasted bread, nutty malts, toffee and brown sugar sweetness. Some raisin also comes through, with a mild chocolate flavour toward the finish followed by a light, toasty bitterness with some grassy hops. These features fade quickly in the aftertaste, making this surprisingly clean-tasting for a 7% lager. Medium-bodied, slightly creamy with fairly soft carbonation. The alcohol is well-hidden initially but builds up after a few sips... though if you have some snack food on hand to combat this effect, it's easy enough to plow through the bottle on your own.

Final Grade: 3.64, a passable B grade. Lake of Bays' China Wall is a pretty good lager, although I will add that it's totally overpriced (and leave it at that, since part of that money is going to a charity, and price has no bearing on my grade anyway). I am actually impressed at how drinkable and balanced this is for a 7% lager, and any fan of American ambers who happens to be looking for a more aggressive brew would probably appreciate this one. About the same level of quality as their seasonals, which may or may not mean it's worth the price to you.

Appearance: It has a nice ruby/amber color to it. It has a nice beige head that dies down moderately and leaves some spotty lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of sweet bready malts, a tone of nuttiness, caramel, grassy/earthy hops and some faint dark fruit.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some bready malts, caramel, some nuttiness and an earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas. Definitely better than I thought it would be, would drink this over Boston Lager any day.

m - medium, little carb, goes down smooth

o - very good and much better than i expected..would buy again if not for the price tag
