Had this at Fosters Pub in Mt. Pleasant. Skull Coast had a tap takeover so I got to taste them all. The appearance on this XPA is what you would expect. Nice head and good lacing. The smell again is where Skull Coast excels. It is as described: there's an almond hint. The taste is what gets you on-board. Not only is a great extra pale ale with a bit of a biscuit dryness, you get a slight almond sweetness. It's a wonderful balance and very drinkable. The mouthfeel is what you would expect with good carbonation. Overall, I would throw this is the 4.25 price range. Much better than what you would expect... since the taste is actually very unexpected.

On tap at the Mellow in Greensboro.Poured into a standard ping glass a lighter hazed golden with a tinge of orange,a nicely defined thinner white head atop.Aromas of light citric hops, biscuit, and toasted almond, the almond used in this beer came thru more than expected.Flavors are not real hop assertive with citric notes intertwined with a sweetish biscuit malt flavor, again there is a trace of toasted almond in the finish. Its not bad but I may not hold this beer in as a high regard as others who have reviewed it.

Had on tap poured into a cold pint glass. First problem was the bartender giving it to me in a cold pint glass. Why do they still do that? Anyway, it poured a golden color with a definable head and good lacing. Probably would have been better if it wasn't in a cold glass. Smell is of apricot and almond, maybe a little citrus. For an XPA is had a really nice flavor with a bit of amaretto. Very unique! Smooth creamy mouthfeel, clean finish. Unique flavor, not particularly strong. Almond got more pronounced as warmed. If you want to try something new in the extra pale ale world this is it.

Hazy blonde with somewhat stark white head and epic lacing. Wow, an extra pale ale that is actually super pale, almost blonde. Aroma of almond, dry grains and some spiciness. Well balanced APA. Just barely sweet grainy malts, slightly spicy hops, and nice almond accents. Definitely more than what I expected. Moderate carbonation, medium body. Quite dry finish. Very nice APA overall that is pleasurable due to the flavor profile. I was pleasantly surprised by this.

Slightly darker golden pour with a frothy white head. Laces the glass very nicely.

Aroma, citrus and piney hops. An herbal spiciness to it as well.

Taste, Great mix of malt, pine and herbal spiciness. Almost rye like, but it lighter than a rye pale. Some grapefruit. Almost a toasted malt background. Finishes dry.

A great drinker. Light bodied, pleanantly carbed. Just what you want in a refreshing yet flavorful pale.

Far and away the best local pale in NC.

Had this on tap at the US WhiteWater Center is Charlotte.
appearance - nice golder hue, with a nice head
smell - great smell for an American Pale Ale
taste - nothing crazy, balanced, slight hint of almond, not too strong, not overpowering, subtle
mouthfeel - right in line with other pale ales
overall - nice job by Skull Coast, I would definitely have this again.

Poured into sample glass, then a pint glass purchased, at New Bern Brew Festival... actually several samplings! Poured a clear golden amber with a tall foamy off-white head with wisps of clouds of sediment swirling through the glass. There were plenty of carbonation bubbles rising up from the bottom of the glass. There was a mild almond aroma. The beer had a light but creamy texture. The earthy hops along with the almond flavor created a wonderful combination. Dry, clean finish. Impressive.

Pours a white-orange color with a finger of frothy slightly white head atop. The head fades slowly leaving behind some nice lacing. Aroma is where this beer is unique - almond. There is also a nice balance provided by the malts in the background. On the second whiff, a really excellent nose. A dry sweetness in the malts with a bit of almond is where the taste lies. Through the middle, the caramel malts get a bit deeper and richer and the hop flavor stays balanced alongside. The finish is a really nice and clean. Pretty much every aspect of this beer is excellently balanced. The aroma profile is really fantastic from start to end, and everything else just falls into place around that. Well conceived and very unique.

Am I first? Sweet. Better do a good job then. Drove a long way to get this, since it's new but glad I did.

Poured into a pint glass. It's a really nice golden straw color. Not see through. Big fluffy white head that stuck around and laced all the way down.

The smell was very different, but good. The bartender told me that it was an almond ale, so it had a faint almond smell. I would go so far as to say it was almost like an Amaretto.

The taste was nutty. I could taste a bit of the almond I guess in there. But it was dry with a nice finish. Not your normal pale ale. There was not an abundance of citrus hops or anything. It was more nutty. But it was pretty hoppy, my tongue tingled.

Mouthfeel was good with a good amount of carbonation.

Overall, it's probably not my favorite from Skull Coast. I'm a big fan of their Gallows Point. But, this is a good twist on the traditional pale ale out on the market. It's definitely worth a try.

Had this at Growlers down in Hilton Head. Brought the old growler home and poured into a pint glass(es). The appearance is a beautiful yellow with a slight orange hue. Much lighter than the typical pale ale I'm used to. The head was lovely puffy white. The smell was of a slight almond, the only downside here. I thought it should have a deeper almond smell, since it is being sold as a Toasted Almond Ale. The taste though... OMG! Freaking perfection for an Extra Pale Ale. The mouthfeel was not thin, which is what I thought it might be for an XPA. Overall, I dropkicked this growler in record time. It was so drinkable that I began wondering if I was developing a problme ;)

Traveled a pretty good distance to find this. I've had trouble finding this on-tap -- mainly because it is usually out by the time I get there. I went all the way down to Fort Mill to the Grapevine, only to find out that they had sold out in one day. Luckily, they directed me across the street to Six Pence who still had some left. Okay, on to the review... well worth the gas money to get! First thing, it is a Extra Pale Ale. It's light in color. Had a thin head, but I'm not sure I would blame the beer. It was poured into a cold glass. But, it had really nice lacing. It had a nutty smell. The aroma was faint Almonds. I had expected maybe a little more in the almond aroma. The taste, however, was a biscuity nuttiness with a hop tinge. Very original. It also had far more mouthfeel than most XPAs I've had. Overall, this is an original beer that is truly something that should at least be tried. I'm now on my second, because the drinkability is easy. I see myself dropping a few of these.

From notes: Pours a hazy golden color with tons of lacing down the glass - Aroma is sweet biscuity malts with almond notes. Taste is slightly sweet, biscuity malts and a dash of almond. Wasn't sure what almond would taste like in a beer. Now I do. There is a some faint spicy hoppiness detected as well. Mouthfeel is surprising. Really tasty.

Poured from a growler to several pint glasses.
A: It was light gold in color. Good head with solid retention.
S: It had a hint of almonds in there. I heard this was a toasted almond ale on facebook. While I'm not sure about the toasting, it did have an almond aroma.
T: Taste didn't necessarily follow the aroma. It was a smooth drinking XPA
M: This is where they excel. It's unfiltered so great mouthfeel.
Overall, I drank the whole growler in one sitting. Definitely a very drinkable ale that kept me drinking. Little hazy this morning.

Beautiful cloudy gold pour with a fluffy half-inch white head. Positively bursting with almond aroma. Crisp pale malt character with nutty front that finishes clean and dry. Body is medium with pitch perfect carbonation. Fantastic session beer. Really impressive compared to the seemingly endless array of over-malted and over-hopped "pale ales" on the market right now. Had more than one!
