Nicely balanced with a color that’s in between dark magohany and ruby (Chestnut describes it perfectly!), there is a fantastic blend of subtle toffee, toasted biscuits, black tea, light coffee and a near-robust nutty flavor that follows the aroma very, VERY nicely. Although it does get a little hoppy, the mild sweetness balances it out. The nicely smooth carbonation makes this beer an enjoyable brew. Overall, this MAY be a good substitute for Goose Island’s Nut Brown Ale! Until Goose Island brings it back, you’ve got yourself a lighter version of the stockyard stout that is enjoyable anytime, even if you like a good stout like the stockyard! Other good nut brown ales to try are those from the Carolina Brewing Company, the Santa Fe Brewing Company and even the Coconut Molasses Brown Ale from Duck Foot Brewing Company. While not a nut brown, the Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale from New Belgium Brewing is also worth the mention.

While writing this, I'm wearing me heavy metal Toad ring!

Nice smoke from the bottle. One finger head, vanishing fast. A ruby brew, when held to the light, otherwise dark brown.

Smells primarily of roasted malt.

Initially watery, nutty hops, roasted malt. Half way through, as it warms a tad (pole), the refined flavors will unfold in ways one will either love or hate (or loves to hate!)

A subtle brew, a mellow sipper, perfect for cool, damp days, almost on par, I suppose, with Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale.
Goes well with "Crunchy Frog" (beloved reference from Monty Python's Flying Circus!)

Drank from bottle. Smells of coffee and caramel, taste same with a bit of brown sugar. Lots of roast malt. Like a porter but a little lighter. Simple but good. Would get it again.

I REALLY like this beer. DARK DARK DARK!
Got it cheap at Trader Joe's - so perhaps that influences my rating, but it is strong, black and smooth. Very much enjoyed it and will gladly purchase agian.

For a name like "black toad", this poured very brown. I do suppose it is a brown ale. Malt bomb all the way around. Smelled sweet and malty, tasted sweet and malty. Maybe a little bit nutty, but mostly just a malt bomb. Mouthfeel was light and carbonated. Really no finish to it what so ever. Overall...I poured this down my drain. Funny thing is that I used to drink it often before I really got into beer, and before my pallet became snobbish. This was horrible IMO and I'll never buy it again, even if it's only a buck.

Pours a rich dark brown, but not stout/porter opaque. Very thick, frothy head and sticky lacing. Has a molasses / grainy sweetness aroma which is diferent and a plus. Very malty body and taste, with just enough hoppiness to keep things intersting Bottle doesn't say if the hops are British, but they could be by the taste. We've not heard of the brewery before. Found these at Trader Joe's in Vancouver, WA.

I have had some beer from Trader Joes that would take varnish off a bar top, so I was not sure what to expect. From a 12 oz bottle this poured almost black (dark brown) with a medium tan head and decent lacing. Nose of roasted malts and chocolate. Mouthfeel smooth. Flavor of caramel, chocolate, and toffee. A little nuts in the finish. This is a good value from Trader Joes. Nice brown.

Found cheap at Trader Joe's. I think it was only $1.00!

Needless to say, I wasn't expecting much.

A - The head is not impressive, with big bubbles, not much retention, and not frothy or foamy, did not positively add to the taste or mouthfeel. The color is a nice shining brown though.

S - Some sweetness and some hops, I didnt linger here too long because I wasnt expecting much and didnt pick up much initially.

T - Much Better than Expected! you can tell the hop bitterness is strong but they are subdued very well by a equally strong, almost caramel sweetness from the malts. Called a English Brown but reminds me more of a Scottish Ale.

Mouthfeel - nothing too special here, but pleasurable nonetheless. Definitely smooth.

Surprisingly good taste considering the price, head appearance, and smell! A nice regular house beer to have if you are on a budget, or plan on drinking quite a few in one night.

A- Pours a very drak brown/black color with a frothy brownish head.

S- Smell is very sweet with coffee tones. A little boring other than the coffee.

T- Tastes of coffee and roasted malts with a hint of chocolate. Excellent porter taste albeit somewhat uninteresting.

M- Mouthfeel is very carbonated but somewhat lacing in viscosity for my taste.

D- This is a very drinkable beer for how cheap it is at trader joes. Another excellent brew if you are on a budget.

12oz bottle served in a standard pint glass.

L - clear deep amber color with a beige head that thinned to a ring leaving thin trails of lacing.

S - toffee sweetness with a hint of roasted malt in the background.

T - sweet flavors of toffee and caramel upfront with just a touch of bittering right before finishing sweet on the lips.

F - medium bodied with a smooth feel and very easy drinkability.

O - for the price, it's a pretty darn good beer.

I tuned to throw the bottle away and the head was gone, never a good way to start. Chocolate and bitter hops take over the flavor. Perhaps I've been ruined by stouts, but this was just too watery. But saying that, it was still pleasant, and a good candidate for a session beer.

Pours a clear, dark brown about midway between mahogany and cola with a fairly thick if not persistent pale cinnamon head. Aroma is strong, smoky and malty with nutty and molasses hints. Flavor, unfortunately, does not live up to the promise of the aroma - it is malty with nutty and caramel undertones but lacks the nice smoky touch of what I regard as a true porter. Texture is quite smooth and just a teensy on the watery side.

Poured from 12oz brown bottle into a clear glass mug. Best by date 07/21/10 on back label. Single purchased at Trader Joe's (Short Pump, VA) for $1.17.

A: Dark brown with ruby highlights and short 1-2 finger light brown head with moderate retention and craggy line of lace.

S: Nice roasted aroma with delicious black coffee and cocoa notes finished with a solid herbal, leafy hops contribution

T: Flavor is light porterish with roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate and nicely rounded out with herbal hops. A nice mild acrid note as well.

M: Body is a little light for the style but has a level carbonation level and a cocoa finish.

D: A very drinkable beer but straddles brown ale and porter styles. I will pick this up when I'm in the malty mood.

Poured from a bottle a very dark brown with red highlights. The off-white head was light and left some light lacing.

Aroma of roasted malts, toffee, caramel and slightly sour.

Tastes of roasted malts and toffee with a touch of bitterness and coffee aftertaste.

Light mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

This is called a porter but in my opinion is more of a dark ale. It's easy to drink but not one I'd like to drink as a session.
