Notes: Sue is the wine barrel-aged version of Susan (1891-1975), our grandfather's sister and the namesake of our bright, citrusy Farmstead IPA. Aged for nearly two years, it has developed and evolved into its current manifestation: a complex, lightly tart and delicately hopped Farmstead ale.

This is similar to E. yet much more rounded and criminally easy to drink. The aging just gives it a slight compliment of complexity but an amazingly soft and juicy farmhouse ale. I could drink this endlessly.

Update. This beer did not age well at all.

Bottle shared by Dreadnaught33. You da man!

Cloudy orange body with an inch of soapy white head. Citrus, stone fruit, grass, oak, hay aroma. White grape and wine flavor with earthy citrus. Delicious. Juicy, resinous hops with inexplicable freshness. Mineral, sulfur character finishing clean. Wonderfully complex and delightfully easy to drink. Winner.

First of all, totally don't understand why this is listed as a wild ale? It's just a barrel aged IPA and it tastes like one. Really mediocre too. Not very refreshing. Wine character does not balance very well with everything else. Ridiculously overhyped as most of the HF beers. Yeah, you can call me HF hater, but unfortunately imho the fact that they made a few great beers doesn't justify high ratings for the mediocre ones.

Shared at DLD. Served in a snifter.

Appearance is hazy lighter lemon yellow body, one finger white head, good retention time, nice collar and a fair bit of lacing. Smells like grapefruit juice, not particularly resinous but quite citrusy, with a bit of oak in the background. It's not particularly funky though it smells moderately tart. Mostly citrus. Flavour is obviously quite citrusy; mostly grapefruit with a bit of oak and mild tartness. It's not complicated, but it's very citrus-forward, which is in keeping with the type of beers that the brewery likes to produce. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, fairly soft, mild tartness and a bit of oak, finishing with a mild grapefruit rind bitterness. Overall a very tasty barrel-aged wild IPA (if that's a style?). Not particularly complex, but it's quite tasty and drinkable.

Purchased at the Brewery today, 11/13/14. 750 mL bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead oversize wine glass.

Pours a bright orange hazed colour, with a full and fine head of off-white, that eventually succumbs to froth and its own effervescent, and collapses, leaving a smudge of thick, chunky lace on the side of the glass. Looks really great.

On the nose is funky acidity like appleskin, fragrant floral characters and a musty, but leavened and sophisticated character like an aged wine barrel. It's an amazing nose, all the more for how restrained and integrated it is. Lovely stuff.

Taste is perfectly light and fragrant, while remaining amazingly clear and refreshing, and true to the roots of the style. Some mild peppery/funky characters on the front get quickly whisked away, leaving room for some delicious tart apple, citrus, and sour grape notes. A really pleasant floral fragrance picks up towards the back.

Feel is excellent - smooth, liquid, with a perfect weight for the characters it presents. It's just perfect.

What a great beer. Genuinely one of the of the style I've ever had. Complex, flavorful, balanced, and easy to drink.

Very interesting, and as described, but not what i expected.

Pours a hazy beer, smells of citrus, the body is super smooth with a ton of hop flavor just like regular sue, but in the mix is the barrel character and a touch of tartness. Very interesting, worth seeking out

Pours a hazy orange hue with a loose, frothy head that quickly disperses into a tight band around the shoulders. Nose expresses citrus, a hint of funk, sweet notes and honeysuckle. Taste consistent with nose with the addition of some light wine barrel characteristics (think light oak and chardonnay) Mouthfeel is light in body with an even, mild carbonation and a light acidity. Overall, an exceptional American Wild and one of my favorite HF beers to date. Lots of subtle complexity here.

Thanks to threelions for sharing his bottle.

Pours a huge fluffy creamy 2 finger head fades semi slowly with tons of lacing, hazy reddish orange color.

Nose is great, fruit, stone almost tropical, nice mild wine notes, juicy grist malt like, mild oak.

Taste brings lots of grassy hops, mild to fair bitterness, into mild wine notes, faint vinous, with light funky flavours, toasted oak. Little blond grainy malt, bready doughy note, nice funk. Finish is big grassy bitterness that doesn't blend well with the fruit and barrel, mild funk like, etc.

Mouth is med softer bod, decent carb.

Overall mixed, some great characters bit a little juxtaposition of the bitter hops and tart fruit and funky flavours with barrel, etc.
