Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): not listed

Notes / Commercial Description:
Flora is the wine barrel aged version of Florence (1915-1967), our grandfather's sister as well as the name of our wheat farmhouse ale. Selected barrels were aged on a variety of hand-picked organic plums from Elmore Roots Nursery in Wolcott, Vt., for several months. The result is a vibrant, refined expression of both harvest and craft.

Received in a trade, shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice clear light honey golden hue with a thin head that fades to leave light wisps.

S - Aromas of typical funky flora type saison. Light wine notes, fair amount of mineral notes, not much plum.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, good wine notes with pleasant saison yeast. Little bit of barrel, the wine is really pleasant however there is very little plum.

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, crisp, clean.

O - Overall this was a very solid farmhouse, however, the plum notes were too subtle for my tastes.

The tone of plum flesh, a juicy orange which I probably hallucinate people hues into. Bright fruit nose, depths of skins with that hazy tannin, grain and tartness. Flavor falls a bit short though, lacking depth it the kind of transformation I expected as it warmed. A great beer but with the cost of attaining ... And I might say the tilquin prunes de namur is superior.

2nd batch, bottled on 1-12-2016

L: Fairly vigorous pour yields a one inch head that disappears to a tiny ring within a minute or two.

S: Citrus, oak, plum, and as it warms some kind of berry comes out.

T: Plum, tart, so nice. As it warms a bit of grapefruit.

F: Full mouthfeel coats the mouth very nicely.

O: Great job on this one. Probably my favorite in the Flora series. One drawback is the price.

Bottle at Warpigs, pre-CBC. Hazy golden with no head. Quince, plums, peaches and farmhouse funk in the nose. Sour, with notes of lemons and peaches.

Murky peach color. Aroma has lots of fruits like quince, plum, apricot, pear and some lambic style funk but quite clean overall. Taste follows with the same fruits I got on the aroma. Not overly sour but it has a good amount of fruit acidity. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation. A really well done sour fruit beer resembling the lambic style.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Hazy orange body. Very hazy. Not much of a head. Smells almost like apricot. Stone fruity aroma. White wine. Tastes lightly tart. The fruit flavor tastes a little bit more like plum, but heavily bent toward acidic stone fruit. Grainy wheat is very strong in the finish. Oak. Medium light body. Medium carbonation. Good stuff.

Batch 2 consumed in a teku

L: My glass is literally glow with pink and soft orange hues and a healthy white foamy head
S: Plums, cherries, and freshly cut grass
T: Tart granny smith apples, grapefruit, and citrus is met by the subtle juiciness and sweetness of the plums
F: Effervescent and bubbly with a very slight chewy texture
O: This was an absolute treat to drink. The tartness of the saison is deftly counterbalanced by a slight sweetness and depth from the plums, which renders a robust farmhouse ale with decided complexity. If you enjoy saisons, you'll thoroughly relish this one.

Traded for this a while ago and was waiting for the right moment to enjoy it peacefully by myself....that happened last night and it was outstanding! Light tart, light plum fruit notes but decent fruit character! Extremely drinkable and refreshing and I would love to get more! Excellent fruited offering by HF!
