Did not find the DH Var01 to be a drastically different take on Arthur. Really enjoyed this one and was nice experimentation on the base. Dry hopping hampered the typical bright citrusy tartness I love about Arthur. Delicious nonetheless.

Bottle from the source.
Looked like Arthur, cloudy yellowish color, healthy white head. Hops and light earthy/grassy funk in the nose. The taste was definitely lacking compared to regular Arthur. BUT Arthur is pretty much my favorite beer, and I think the foedering has a lot to do with that beer's uniqueness. Since this version was aged in stainless, I think that really detracted from the beer overall. It was still very good, but lacked that tart oaky *zing* that's always pleasant in regular Arthur or Art. The dry-hopping definitely came through, and that was really the whole point...they probably wouldn't have come through as much in a regular Arthur. Interesting to try for sure, but not my favorite.

Drank this side by side with Arthur for comparison sake to see what these Styrian Golding hops do Arthur.

The smell and taste are completely different, the difference is just like night and day. Regular Arthur both smells and tastes of citrus and is a more tart saison. The Arthur dry hopped with styrian gold hops smells and tastes of substantial more earthy and rustic qualities with a light hop profile; also heavier on the mineral and well water profile. So I get what Shawn Hill was going for in this Arthur variant. He took Arthur which is a modern day spin on a saison (tart and citrusy) and took it back to the rustic style saison that we all know and love. He got totally old school on Arthur by dry hopping with styrian golding hops and like this Arthur variant even more than regular Arthur. I hope that this is made in greater quantities in the future so that you can buy more than two bottles during your visit at Hill Farmstead.

Thanks Kegatron for the share. 750ml bottle poured into a matching oversized HF wine glass. The brew appears ahazy golden yellow color with a white head that fades leaving spotty lace.

Smells of clove and banana yeastiness with mild citrus-like hop addition.

This tastes identical to what the aroma leads on: clove, banana, citrus, pear, grass, earth, wheat and lots of earthy hops in the background.

This is medium in body with modest carbonation. A nice beer to try but really not sure if I like it anymore than normal Arthur.
